Odd eating habits of your childhood

I was talking to a friend recently, about things we'd considered a treat as a child. Turns out some of mine aren't usually considered a treat! And also that sone of my other eating habits were considered rather odd by this friend.

I used to love being allowed to eat a "raw" cube of jelly. Or a spoonful of black treacle. Drink the juice out of tinned pineapple.

I would often take a swig out of a jar of pickled onions (just the vinegar), eat raw potato when my mum was making dinner, crunch on uncooked spaghetti.

Did anyone else have these habits? Is it really that odd?

Yes! Raw jelly and the vinegar from the jar.

An undisolved stock cube anyone?

HollowTalk · 13/10/2018 22:34

Does anyone remember a big jar of a toffee-like thing which was cod liver oil and malt? I could've eaten that all day.

And yes to the jelly cubes.

Sparrowlegs248 · 13/10/2018 22:35

Ooh I'm not odd after all!! I didn't have unresolved stock cube but often had a cup of hot Oxo as a treat in winter.

I used to offer to crumble the Oxo cubes so I could lock my fingers after, or sneak a whole cube to suck on Confused

Sparrowlegs248 · 13/10/2018 22:36

No idea what that was Hollow! Does sound a bit odd!

You missed out!

My brother still eats raw jelly cubes on a weekly basis, and he's in his forties. I also watched a friend's DD eat a raw jelly this morning, so in their house at least it's seen as quite treatlike.

My favourite meal as a child was smash and sweetcorn. Nobody in their right mind would thank you for it, but we had it as an "emergency dinner" when camping once and I loved it!!!! So much so that it was my most requested meal, and since it only involved boiling a kettle I was allowed to make it for myself.

A small pickled onion between two Skips.

HildaZelda · 13/10/2018 22:46

I used to put butter on meat. As in butter on my (cooked and on the plate) chicken fillet and piece of bacon etc. I don't put it on meat nowadays, but I am still very partial to butter especially on potatoes.

Raw jelly, crumbled Oxo cube over dinner, squirty cream straight out of tin, frozen peas (whilst frozen), dripping on toast!

HollowTalk · 13/10/2018 22:49

Cheese and pineapple on sticks. Cheese and silverskin pickled onions on sticks. Little sausages on sticks. It's PARTY TIME!

Sparrowlegs248 · 13/10/2018 22:51

Lost I might try that, it's just the sort of thing I'd like.

Ok 2 of my favourites:
Cream of chicken soup with a chopped up banana in it.
And a plate of tuna (No mayo) beans and cucumber, mixed together.
Don't judge me! 😂

Sparrowlegs248 · 13/10/2018 22:53

I used to make smash with fried onions and bacon, and grate cheese over. Yum.

Remembered another, crush the crisps inside a pack into tiny pieces then eat with a spoon.

Sparrowlegs248 · 13/10/2018 22:54

Baked beans?? That is odd.

Off all soup with chips in.

Oxtail....

I'm someone who loves butter as I remember when it was rationed, and it was a great treat to go to Lyon's Corner House at Marble Arch where they served wafer-thln bread with real butter.
I used to eat jelly cubes when pregnant as they staved off pangs of nausea.

MarklahMarklah · 13/10/2018 22:57

Raw jelly cubes, licking the powder off the inside of the soup packet (the stuff you sprinkle into boiling water), a bit off an oxo cube, sliced buttered bread in warm milk, reconstituted orange juice (you had to add water), cinnamon toast, juice from a can of fruit, raw pasta, pickled onion juice instead of vinegar on bacon, boiled mixed veg, drained and served hot with a couple of spoonsful of salad cream mixed in....
I ate some weird stuff.

Aprilislonggone · 13/10/2018 22:59

I used to shut the door on dgm's utility room, cut the rinds of the bacon with scissors and eat it raw!!
*maybe why I turned vegi at 15!!
Envynot envy.

Clevs · 13/10/2018 22:59

Juice from tinned pineapple/mandarin oranges.
Licking the cake bowl (not literally, but using a spoon!).
Vinegar from pickled onions put in a separate shaker to normal vinegar and put on our chips.
Eating a piece of raw spaghetti whilst waiting for it to cook.
Fighting with my brother over the skin on rice pudding and custard.
Eating the skin off a roast chicken (still do).

TeaByTheSeaside · 13/10/2018 23:00

HollowTalk - it was cod liver oil and malt. We also loved it!

Thatstheendofmytether · 13/10/2018 23:01

Yup baked beans 😂
Salt and vinegar crisps with chocolate.

Sparrowlegs248 · 13/10/2018 23:01

Also used to make up the sachets of powdered custard in a jug and eat the whole lot!

Thatstheendofmytether · 13/10/2018 23:05

Anyone remember creamola foam? Not that weird, it just popped into my head.

LostInShoebiz · 13/10/2018 23:05

Crumble topping (uncooked). I’d wait until my mum was out, heave the Kenwood mixed up onto the worktop and mix up a huge bowl of crumble topping then eat it out the bowl and clean up before she came home.
