Odd eating habits of your childhood

I was talking to a friend recently, about things we'd considered a treat as a child. Turns out some of mine aren't usually considered a treat! And also that sone of my other eating habits were considered rather odd by this friend.

I used to love being allowed to eat a "raw" cube of jelly. Or a spoonful of black treacle. Drink the juice out of tinned pineapple.

I would often take a swig out of a jar of pickled onions (just the vinegar), eat raw potato when my mum was making dinner, crunch on uncooked spaghetti.

Did anyone else have these habits? Is it really that odd?

Staples at my nan's house were sugar sandwiches and tinned fruit salad with tinned nestle cream and sugar sprinkled over the top. How she still had all her own teeth in her 90s is amazing.

@HollowTalk - I think you're definitely talking about malt extract, which I would spoon from the jar for its iron and b-vitamin deliciousness.

MyfanwyMontez · 14/10/2018 01:15

HollowTalk
I think it was called Virol. I loved it .

My dad used to make me cabbage water with beef Oxo. I used to think it was the tastiest thing ever. In fact , I may have some today.

Bloodybridget · 14/10/2018 01:58

Good to read other posters saying they are raw pasta, I used to nibble a length of uncooked spaghetti sometimes; also raw bacon rinds. Loved an Oxo cube - they only made beef ones when I was a child - or a teaspoon of Marmite. For something sweet, jelly cubes or a few slices of cooking apple dipped in Demerara sugar.

We didn't have snacky things in the house normally, there wasn't nearly as much available then anyway, so I guess we were just foraging around for something to nibble. Must try offering DGCs a raw bacon rind next time they're down . .

I was given Virol in the 70s. Delicious.

Also had ribena mixed with milk to make pink milk

Treacle sandwiches

Yes to raw jelly

VimFuego101 · 14/10/2018 02:18

I used to make ribena mixed with milk to! Turns my stomach thinking about it now.

DoubleNegativePanda · 14/10/2018 02:38

I've googled but still can't find out what a raw jelly cube is. I'm thinking it's concentrated gelatin to make jelly, but I've only ever seen it as leaf or granulated in packets. I do remember opening a corner of the Jello packet and sticking a wet finger in to lick it off.

My favorite sandwich when I was a child was peanut butter and sliced sweet gherkins. I just tried it for the first time in twenty years a few months ago and it's still delicious! I made my coworkers try it and they were shocked that it's not disgusting.

Chocolate ice cream with salted popcorn on top.

Ah yes the lovely taste of antibiotics in a syrupy liquid. My sister and I had almost constant tonsillitis put would steal each others medicine and couldn't follow a course in a controlled fashion. Funnily enough we were both cured when we left home and no longer shared our antibiotics.

thighofrelief · 14/10/2018 02:42

Panda we make jello from a rubbery concentrated block that you dissolve in hot water from the kettle. You can break off a cube and it is like a poor mans gummibear.

Charley50 · 14/10/2018 02:45

I also used to eat raw jelly cubes and uncooked spaghetti as a treat (Not together!).

A friend and I had a year long phase of Skips dipped in Mr Man Fudge yogurt. Grin

I used to ask my mum to sieve Ready Brek so it was more like oat flavoured milk. Lovely!

Charley50 · 14/10/2018 02:47

Oh and we used to eat condensed milk sandwiches while we watched Tiswas.

missjoanie · 14/10/2018 04:49

Thin slices of cucumber in vinegar at teatime, only on Saturdays, mind. 😄

Bluesheep8 · 14/10/2018 08:04

Cubes of jelly, I'd forgotten all about that! Oh and licking raw cake mix off the spoon

QOD · 14/10/2018 08:05

I remember eating a mix of I guess hot chocolate powder and sugar. Think my sister ‘made’ it. Then I made it myself and it was HORRENDOUS. I guess now that I must have used cocoa powder ?

2 spoons of baked beans on top of the cheese in a toasted cheese sandwich 🥪
(Did That yesterday too)

Sugar sandwiches. I reckon it was when the jam had run out but we thought it was a treat lol

Bluesheep8 · 14/10/2018 08:06

And salad cream on jacobs crackers, or crackers with butter and jam or lemon curd. I still eat salad cream on crackers now and dp has ketchup or brown sauce on bread. ..

And strawberry antibiotic medicine as a pp said

greyallover · 14/10/2018 10:00

Wallpaper, I used to tear it off my wall and eat it when I was in bed. Hmm

MrsPatmore · 14/10/2018 10:22

I only ever had toast toasted on one side with butter on the untoasted side. Crisp sandwiches (salt n vinegar my favourite), sugar sandwiches on white bread with butter - so unhealthy but no-one batted an eyelid in the 70's. Also sucked on raw sugar cane. Had lots of tooth fillings though! Also loved Dandelion and Burdock with a scoop of ice cream.

ALemonyPea · 14/10/2018 10:35

American mustard sandwiches

Oxo diluted in hot water, aka oxo tea, in a mug with buttered bread to dunk in.

Juanbablo · 14/10/2018 10:38

I used to steal my grandad's liquorice cigarette papers and chew them. And I used to eat raw spaghetti and hang around my mum when she cooked so she would give me raw carrots.

LongSummerDays · 14/10/2018 10:45

Raw spaghetti, frozen raw vol au vents, jelly cubes, cabbage heart, raw pastry, raw cake batter, rice pudding skin (still love this), glacé cherry syrup. Handful of dry cornflakes as a snack, buttered weetabix, sugar sandwich. Spoonful of golden syrup.

FlamingGoat · 14/10/2018 10:48

Aprilislonggone
I still do that with bacon rind!Blush

Novinosincebambino · 14/10/2018 10:59

Oh my goodness! I have found my people! Grin

Frozen chips anyone? Still do it sometimes now
Raw pastry
Uncooked spaghetti
And I also got caught climbing up to the cupboard to steal some of the dog's biscuits!

Livedandlearned2 · 14/10/2018 11:33

Raw spaghetti dipped in marmite. Crisps floating in soup. Loads of cheese on vegetarian ravioli, Sainsburys no longer make this ravioli, I still crave it sometimes. Pickled onions, peeling off the layers to savour it slowly.

I drank a whole jar of pickled onion vinegar once and was so ill the next day, I never really touched them after that.

And a massive yes to Crunchy nut cornflakes in ice cream, in a mug, all mixed together. Crunchy nut cornflakes were the height of luxury for me, I really loved them. I don't eat any cereal at all now, hate it!
