First aid advice please (pic)

DS has cut his elbow open, the pic is his arm straight

He can move his arm fine, however he is hysterical at the thought of stitches. He’s always hated needles. Do you think this would be ok with just steri strips?

Poor lad. I would get that looked at properly and let a professional make that decision.

No, that needs medical attention.

DailyMailDontStealMyThread · 13/10/2018 14:16

That needs a proper look at, it needs a good clean. They could possibly glue it.

Good luck

WeShouldBeFriends · 13/10/2018 14:17

Yes that will in all likelihood need stitches. How old is he?

simonisnotme · 13/10/2018 14:18

that needs to be seen by a nurse at least, it may need stitches depends how deep it is

ALemonyPea · 13/10/2018 14:18

Definitely needs medical attention. DS1 did similar a few years ago and they gave him gas and air to calm him down before doing needles.

MamaLovesMango · 13/10/2018 14:19

Minor injuries unit for that one at the very least. Sorry.

FirstAidDevice · 13/10/2018 14:21

He’s 11, there is no way in the world he’s going to let someone stitch it. He’s a lovely, placid boy but is hysterical at even the mention. Not sure what I can do here, will they definitely let him have gas and air?

It's on a joint, doubt steristrips will hold the cut together long enough to knit. Sorry, but I think it's a minor injuries job.

SpuriouserAndSpuriouser · 13/10/2018 14:26

That definitely needs medical attention. Hard to say what they will do if it needs closing, as it's in such a tricky place. I don't know if a minor injuries type place will have gas and air, very possibly not, so I wouldn't make him any promises. I'd just take him in and get it looked at, and see what they want to do.

Sallystyle · 13/10/2018 14:26

He might end up needing more medical attention if it isn't seen to.

A&E will be very used to seeing very scared children in this situation. I see no reason why they won't give gas and air, but either way they will handle the situation I am sure.

It looks really sore, bless him.

Sallystyle · 13/10/2018 14:28

Ahh yes, I forgot not all MI are attached to the main A&E like mine is.

We have to register at A&E and then they send you to MI.

CrispbuttyNo1 · 13/10/2018 14:29

If it’s on the elbow I doubt they would stitch it but it does need to be cleaned and properly dressed to avoid infection.

retainertrainer · 13/10/2018 16:00

They glue it these days don’t they? DS split his chin and they just glued it. Best of luck.

LongSummerDays · 13/10/2018 16:25

Definitely get it seen to. Hope it heals quickly.

GlitteryFluff · 13/10/2018 16:33

Hope you've managed to get him seen by someone Thanks

Fairylea · 13/10/2018 16:35

That looks quite nasty. Needs attention. They may give him some gas and air or numbing cream around it if he is hysterical about having it looked at.

Biancadelriosback · 13/10/2018 16:39

I doubt they would glue or use strips as it isn't a 'neat' wound. The jagged edges would make it difficult so they will probably stitch. I don't think they'll let him had gas and air either im afraid, just local which hurts like a bitch!
It needs to be cleaned to reduce the risk of infection too. You'll be in for a canny wait at A&E probably I'm afraid!

Sarahani · 13/10/2018 16:43

Poor thing. Need stitches and tetanus I would say. No need to tell him that though, A&E can work their magic once you're there.

FirstAidDevice · 13/10/2018 17:37

Hello All

Thanks for all the advice, we went to the pharmacy first, they sent us to the walk in and they sent us to A&E (following the flow chart yo 👊)

He’s been cleaned and steri stripped and glued, they gave him gas and air and we were in and out in an hour #loveournhs

SpuriouserAndSpuriouser · 13/10/2018 18:49

Glad it went ok, hope he’s feeling better now!

Knittedfairies · 13/10/2018 19:02

Glad he’s sorted; that looked nasty!
