I solemnly swear I am up to no good?

I mean it's pretty specific, isn't it?

Any other HP questions you'd like to know the answers too? We can share our theories too.
NB: going through a depressive episode so talking about one of my teenage passions adult passions.

How on Earth did no one realise that Scabbers the rat was actually animagus Peter Pettigrew? I mean, someone MUST have had an inkling as he'd been in the Weasley family for a long time, but no, it was Crookshanks who (sort of) blew Pettigrew's cover!

SageYourResoluteOracle · 12/10/2018 16:49

PS I hope you're okay?

Igorina · 12/10/2018 16:51

That's what worked for them. The map knew they were mischief makers and would use it for its intended purpose.

Look what it said to Snape. :o

welpboop · 12/10/2018 16:51

@FantasticHarryPotter That's a good question, OP!

@SageYourResoluteOracle I guess because no one knew he was an Animagus and he was also officially 'dead', so why would anyone make the connection that the Weasley's pet rat was Pettigrew when he was dead and no one living other than Lupin and Black knew he was an Animagus. Grin

When Moody checks the boggart for Molly in grimmauld place using his eye and looking through the floors - what did he see in the writing desk? It must have transformed into his fear because lupin says no one knows what a boggart looks like on its own. I think about this a lot!

Idontmeanto · 12/10/2018 16:52

I suspect it’s a bit like Riddle’s diary, paper with personality, that could get to know F and G and decide they were worthy of telling/giving hints to. I get the feeling the Maurauders felt they were creating an heirloom.

Catmint · 12/10/2018 16:53

I've always wanted to know the exchange rate between galleons and sterling.

WeeBeasties · 12/10/2018 16:55

JKR answered this in an interview. The map helped them- it recognised a couple of good trouble makers and gave hints and clues until they got the password right.

Idontmeanto · 13/10/2018 02:34

Really beasties! Perhaps I read it!

kviddics · 13/10/2018 03:59

I've always wanted to know the exchange rate between galleons and sterling.

Rowling once said that it's about £5 to a galleon!

FantasticHarryPotter · 13/10/2018 07:18

Ooh I must've missed it. Excellent explanation now I think of it Smile

Fantastic sorry to hear you’re having a bad time. Have you listened to the audio books read by Stephen Fry? I love them; they’re are great for occupying your mind if that’s what you need.

IdaBWells · 13/10/2018 07:25

My unanswered question is how did Harry grow up to be so stable with many noble qualities after a childhood of emotional abuse and neglect? I know he was with his mother for at least a few months before his parents died but surely he would have a serious attachment disorder after the treatment he received form the Dursleys? I think they mention how they refused to speak to him as a small child. I know it’s just a book for entertainment but why does Harry seem to bear no mental scars?

Doyoumind · 13/10/2018 07:26

The famous question that links both Peter Pettigrew and the Marauders Map is why F and G never saw him on it when he was in Ron's bed/pocket.

MinecraftHolmes · 13/10/2018 07:30

Rowling once said that it's about £5 to a galleon! I wonder how Brexit will impact that Grin

I wanted to know how the bursary system at Hogwarts works. Is there a free/MoM school for those who can’t pay the fees or secure a bursary? Where do magical children go to school before the age of 10 when they’re from magical families (and not muggle families who don’t know to expect them to get a Hogwarts letter)?

BikeRunSki · 13/10/2018 07:31

I've always wanted to know the exchange rate between galleons and sterling.

We gave DS a voucher for 25 Galleons for his birthday last month, to spend in the HP Studios shop when we visit tommorow. The exchange rate will be determined at lunchtime today and is directly linked to homework, music practice and general niceness.

BishopstonFaffing · 13/10/2018 07:37

Ida- not everyone with a childhood like that will end up with attachment issues.

PiggyPlumPie · 13/10/2018 07:43

Doyoumind I think that the film map only shows the important characters whereas the book map would have every single person in Hogwarts on it and would look really confusing. I guess Fred and George wouldn't have been looking for Pettigrew or probably even Ron so he went unnoticed.

EyUpOurKid · 13/10/2018 07:46

Sorry you're having a difficult one , OP. Brilliant idea for a thread, I love HP. I'm a Hufflepuff.

That is such a good question! Shock

Katedotness1963 · 13/10/2018 07:52

Maybe magic hid them when they were being their animal selves? Made them untraceable?

IAmWhoYouSayIAm · 13/10/2018 07:56

I always wonder why Sirius was labelled guilty from the beginning (when he allegedly had blown up muggles and Peter Petigrew) when SB was James’ best friend and PG was this “hanger on”.

Did AB, Weasleys etc know that SB was innocent.

MrsBartlettforthewin · 13/10/2018 07:57

In the book doesn't Harry see Peter in the map and tells Lupin.
I think Fred and George just didn't pay much attention to Ron and the map in the book was populated with everyone so harder to see.

MrsBartlettforthewin · 13/10/2018 07:59

But SB came from a notorious pure family. And was a great wizard plus no one knew the potters had changed their secret keeper at the last moment did they?

MrsBartlettforthewin · 13/10/2018 08:00

Whereas peter was useless so why would anyone believe he'd manage to do anything let alone be used by Voldemort.

AynRandTheObjectivist · 13/10/2018 08:01

In the film at least, Harry saw Pettigrew on the map when he was in rat form. Quite a creepy scene as he looked for him and saw him apparently passing on the map. Plus he mentioned it to Lupin. I can't remember if he saw him in the book. I don't think so but it's been a while.

It's very hard to write a strong plot with great characters and absolutely no plotholes. It's one reason why fiction is more interesting than real life most of the time.
