I solemnly swear I am up to no good?

I mean it's pretty specific, isn't it?

Any other HP questions you'd like to know the answers too? We can share our theories too.
NB: going through a depressive episode so talking about one of my teenage passions adult passions.

Even HP wikia is confused:
“It is not clear how Harry Potter, Hermione Granger, or the numerous visitors paying their respects in the years following the murder of James and Lilly Potter were able to see the Potter cottage as the secret keeper, Peter Pettigrew was alive at the time.”

Not just me!!

PrivateParkin · 13/10/2018 09:22

But Sirius is able to tell Harry and co the truth about what happened, so couldn't he just have done that but to someone in authority, and then with the veritaserum they would have known that was the absolute truth.

I find the secret keeper charm v confusing so I am probably over simplifying it!

PrivateParkin · 13/10/2018 09:23

Excellent point about people being able to see the cottage. It definitely doesn't add up!!

bruffin · 13/10/2018 09:27

But James and Lily were dead. isnt it their wearabouts that is kept secret not the cottage itself.
Peter Pettigrew broke the secret, so surely the secret no longer existed?

and once they died the house became a monument to them and charms were put on it so only witches and wizards could see it.

PrivateParkin · 13/10/2018 09:28

Yes, that makes sense bruffin.

kaytee87 · 13/10/2018 09:30

I know he was with his mother for at least a few months before his parents died

He was a toddler when his parents died. Around 15mo I think.

bruffin · 13/10/2018 09:44

This is why Peter became the secret keeper

"Lily and James only made you Secret-Keeper because I suggested it,” Black hissed, so venomously that Pettigrew took a step backward. “I thought it was the perfect plan . . . a bluff. . . . Voldemort would be sure to come after me, would never dream they’d use a weak, talentless thing like you. . . . It must have been the finest moment of your miserable life, telling Voldemort you could hand him the Potters.”

PrivateParkin · 13/10/2018 09:51

Yes exactly. So why couldn't Sirius just explain that to Fudge or whoever? Or would Fudge have just set a Dementor on him on sight, like he did with Barty Crouch Jr?

PrivateParkin · 13/10/2018 09:54

PS one of the things I love about HP is it throws up as many questions as answers!! 🤔

kaytee87 · 13/10/2018 09:54

@PrivateParkin Sirius didn't get a trial. He was driven half mad with grief and was locked up immediately.
Was fudge already minister at that point? I can't remember.

PrivateParkin · 13/10/2018 10:00

Yes I know - it was Barty Crouch SR who threw him straight into Azkaban. But what about after he escaped? Really, there should be no wrongful imprisonment in the wizarding world because of the truth potion!

serbska · 13/10/2018 10:03

I thought Harry seeing Peter on the map was just in the film? However Lupin sees him on the map when Sirius drags Ron to the shack so animagus can be seen

Harry does not see PP on the map in the book.

You would have thought F&G or Harry would have spotted PP in Ron’s bed wouldn’t you!

PrivateParkin · 13/10/2018 10:04

Also, following on from the question about money earlier, did Vernon and Petunia get any money from Lily and James/Dumbledore for Harry's keep?

PolkadotsAndMoonbeams · 13/10/2018 10:04

I don't think Percy fails his Apparition test — they talk about Charlie having to take it twice, but I'm pretty sure the point is that everybody else passed first time.

PrivateParkin · 13/10/2018 10:06

I feel a bit sorry for Petunia. It must have been so awful watching her sister go off to Hogwarts while she was left at home. I can understand her resentment.

FantasticHarryPotter · 13/10/2018 10:10

I don't think the Dursley's were given money as Harry says in Philosophers Stone Petunia complains about how much he costs her.

Harry is over a year when his parents die - SB gave him a broomstick for his 1st birthday.
Dumbledore left a swaddled baby (not toddler) on the dursleys doorstep. If Harry was a toddler who was able to play on a broomstick, surely he'd have got up and crawled/walked away during the night?

WinkysTeatowel · 13/10/2018 10:12

PolkadotsAndMoonbeams exactly, I can't imagine Fred & George would have let that go without teasing Percy.

bruffin they take the Apparition Test after 17 though which should be in the 6th year, Harry, Ron & Hermione have their lessons during The Half Blood Prince when they are in the 6th Year as they don't go back for 7th Year.

WinkysTeatowel · 13/10/2018 10:13

Oooh Whitelisbon good point.

NewYoiker · 13/10/2018 10:19

I love these!

I have one...

What do people think of the revelation that Nagini is a woman with a blood curse that turned her into a snake? 😬

kaytee87 · 13/10/2018 10:24

@NewYoiker what book was that in? I've read them all again recently, am I not paying attention ?

NewYoiker · 13/10/2018 10:26

www.google.co.uk/amp/s/amp.www.complex.com/pop-culture/2018/09/jk-rowling-explains-voldemort-snake-was-human-woman-nagini

It's in the film fantastic beasts but people on Twitter are losing their shit about it. It was 'revealed' about a week or so ago

MrsBartlettforthewin · 13/10/2018 10:27

@NewYoiker say what now? Where has that idea come from?

MrsBartlettforthewin · 13/10/2018 10:27

Cross post

MrsBartlettforthewin · 13/10/2018 10:34

Oh wow that is an interesting idea. Now I want to know how she ended up with Voldemort? How did he make her a horcrux? How did she get stuck as a snake? So many questions?!
