Calling techy iPhone people

Graphista · 08/10/2018 19:18

Had phone (iPhone SE) almost 2 years. Still in good working order mostly. But I've NEVER updated the OS.

Initially as that OS was having a lot of problems at the time and I really couldn't be arsed, but I'm now reaching a point some of my apps aren't supported by the version I'm using -

9.3.4

Every day I get a "reminder" to update and every day I cancel.

But I'm thinking with a heavy heart and twisty stomach I'm gonna have to...

Thing is I have extreme anxiety and I'm basically on my phone all the time when I'm awake. Very anxiety inducing not to be AND I don't sleep well (never have all my life) and when I really can't sleep I go on phone.

So I'm wanting to know is there a quick way to update? If not how long does it take? I remember from previous phone it taking bloody hours!

Personally I wish they'd (app and phone designers) not fix what ain't broken!

So any tips?

The last update I did took about ten minutes altogether.

Stephisaur · 08/10/2018 19:28

I do mine before bed. I am GLUED to my phone, so it’s the only time I put it down 😂

It doesn’t usually take long, but I’d allow longer as you’re about 4 years behind!

Start downloading it now and then click install just before bed and it should be ready in the morning :)

NotExactlyHappyToHelp · 08/10/2018 19:29

It might take a little longer possibly because you’re playing catch up but like Liveandlearned2 my last update took less than 10 minutes.

It definitely doesn’t take hours at all any more.

ALemonyPea · 08/10/2018 19:30

Make sure you back it up, just in case, as it’s a few updates behind.

You can request it updates at a certain time, does it give you that option when you decline the update request?

Graphista · 08/10/2018 19:33

Reminder pops up same time every day. Not sure if I set it that way or if preset.

How the hell do I back it up??

I have an SE for work that was missing updates. One of their IT bods sorted it all today from 9.something to 12! Took about 12-15 mins. Maybe go and do something torally different (long hot bath, manicure?) while it's going?

citiesofbismuth · 08/10/2018 19:37

Do you have an iCloud account to back it up to? You can back up pictures and music onto a computer by going into iTunes after you've connected your phone up to the computer.

Sometimes older devices won't support the latest update.

Graphista · 08/10/2018 19:48

Don't have a computer I can connect to.

It tells me sometimes that I haven't backed up "for 3547 days" Grin feel like it's telling me off!

I don't necessarily WANT to back everything up to iCloud - can't that be hacked? Some of my pics etc are ahem, very personal!

OP posts:
Graphista · 08/10/2018 19:49

Also the "you haven't backed up for..." Thing doesn't tell me how to backup!

OP posts:
Graphista · 08/10/2018 19:54

Oooo have I stumped the techys?

OP posts:
Graphista · 08/10/2018 19:54

I have no idea IF I have an iCloud account - how would I check?

OP posts:
Livedandlearned2 · 08/10/2018 20:02

Go onto settings>passwords and accounts>icloud>icloud backup>back up now.

Graphista · 08/10/2018 20:10

Not doing anything till I know exactly what will happen.

I also play a few games on phone (again helps anxiety) and don't want to lose progress on them. Some I've been playing for almost 10 years!

BringOnTheScience · 08/10/2018 20:14

Have you got an Apple store nearby? You can give them something to do Grin

Graphista · 08/10/2018 21:08

No plus I'm agoraphobic and currently housebound. Plus I wouldn't want them messing with, geniuses my eye!!

Backing up your phone is a positive even if you don't update, as it will save most things if your phone breaks, so definitely back it up.

ALemonyPea · 08/10/2018 22:38

Back up will be fine, it’ll save your game progress as well, although if you link to FB, should be saved there as well.

Back up saves everything to the cloud, you might lose it otherwise when updating.

CordeliaGoode · 08/10/2018 23:00

Bloody hell!

Graphista · 08/10/2018 23:30

Yes but who can access it in the cloud?

Will backing up also save notes and memos and reminders? I rely on calendar in particular for meds reminders inc ordering new prescriptions.

OP posts:
Livedandlearned2 · 09/10/2018 18:39

No one.else can access it and it's only a protection in case the update goes wrong. If you don't update you're more at risk from security breaches as far as I know.

Graphista · 09/10/2018 19:40

Anything can be hacked I know that much! In recent years even banks have been. I'd prefer not to back up all my stuff I don't think it unreasonable to expect to be able to do this.

OP posts:
Livedandlearned2 · 09/10/2018 19:48

Don't then

LittleTechGirl · 09/10/2018 20:15

Update it. Updates have bug fixes including for security patches. Apple have several security vulnerabilities in iOS that they have patched through updates. You're more likely to lose data by not updating regularly as the bigger the jump, the more that needs changing, the more that can get lost. Fair enough delaying major version updates but minor one's should be installed within a week of release. I would worry more about being hacked through not updating your phone than the iCloud accounts being hacked. You can back up to iCloud and then delete the back up after the update is selected.

Fridaydreamer · 09/10/2018 20:17

At end of day you have these options:

  1. Back up to cloud or a PC/Laptop to protect it and the update to IOS 12.
  1. Risk updating to IOS 12 without a backup - you may lose stuff - you may not.
  1. Don’t update to IOS 12 and eventually your apps and games etc will stop working.

Choice is yours.

LittleBearPad · 09/10/2018 20:19

If you don’t back it up then if anything goes wrong you are buggered.

Set up iCloud with a sensibly hard password and then update it. It won’t take that long.
