I think it is hilarious! Also apparently it is worth even more now so it’s a win win win win scenario.

Banksy gets publicity
The previous owner gets a wheelbarrow load of money
The gallery gets a massive commission
The new owner gets a unique collectible piece of art which has already increased in value.

However the old owner has reportedly had the piece since 2006 so when was the mechanism installed?...

RealGhouls · 06/10/2018 10:40

It's a publicity stunt, probably put in for the auction. Fake shit.

elifant · 06/10/2018 10:50

🤣

RB68 · 06/10/2018 10:54

its the antiestablishmentariaism (not even sure that is a word) aspect - the kick in the teeth towards capitalism, which is where Banksy's roots are.

Theyprobablywill · 06/10/2018 10:54

In my head I always call him Wanksy

NeedsAsockamnesty · 06/10/2018 10:59

It’s all an artistic experance and what not

RealGhouls · 06/10/2018 11:02

"its the antiestablishmentariaism (not even sure that is a word) aspect - the kick in the teeth towards capitalism, which is where Banksy's roots are."

Is it fuck. It's not even cross-cut shredded. Basically undamaged, gained massive publicity, and unquestionably now worth far more money. For the capitalist art market.

And bear in mind these art auctions are often fixed by dealers & auction houses. All fake as fuck

limitedperiodonly · 06/10/2018 11:04

Robin always seemed to have a sense of humour.

My MIL likes to name-drop. It's one of her endearing little foibles, as I was saying to Tracey Emin only the other night.

I’m reading the comments open mouthed, shocked that so many of you are this gullible.

Because Sotheby’s is really not going to notice a shredder in the frame. They’re really going to examine a valuable and iconic piece of art millimetre by millimetre to access its condition, authenticatate it, document it for insurance and miss a remote control shredder.

Yeah, that happened.

speakout · 06/10/2018 11:12

Can't swallow this one at all.

Publicity stunt by Banksy and the auction house.

The picture was framed on the wall.

The shredder would have had to be installed within the frame, requiring joinery work, electrical cables, maybe a remote control sensor to turn on the power.

There would have to have been auction house workers and the auction house itself to be in on this to make it happen.

I'm not buying into this publicity crap at all.

speakout · 06/10/2018 11:13

Don't fall for it people!

RealGhouls · 06/10/2018 11:16

Yep, they want to make out this genius bloke installed this shredder 10 years ago and it worked perfectly from a remote control with a bloke in mysterious sunglasses who they wrestled to the ground, as opposed to the much more logical explanation that they were in on it and did it getting millions in free publicity.

Some people are sooooooooo gullible.

TeaStory · 06/10/2018 11:20

Do you really think we hasn’t thought of that? Do you really think we don’t find the stunt itself entertaining and funny?

Do you know we also laugh at other “fake” and “scripted” stuff because it’s funny? Like sitcoms? And stand up? Or is only your type of humour allowed now?

TeaStory · 06/10/2018 11:21

*hadn’t

RealGhouls · 06/10/2018 11:25

Yes

ReallyExhaustedLlama · 06/10/2018 11:27

Yep - also strikes me as a publicity stunt and wonder if it’s even the original in the frame.

Can’t believe Sotheby’s wouldn’t have noticed a mechanism like that in the frame with their careful inspection of items. Or doesn’t say much for their security procedures.

Also when they take it off the wall it’s doesn’t appear to have any security features to stop just anyone lifting it off the wall. Surely a picture of that value would?!

I’d assume the gallery/auction house and artist’s team are all in on it!

Ifailed · 06/10/2018 11:27

Agree with others, the picture that was 'shredded' was a copy. The original is safe and will be delivered to the buyer.

SpoonBlender · 06/10/2018 11:27

It doesn't matter whether it's 'real' or 'fake' - what do those terms mean exactly for this anyway? The art is in the reactions to it. Job's done, and done well.

EnthusiasmIsDisturbed · 06/10/2018 11:28

It’s all hype a set up as if a shredder would get through the intricate examination that would have been done

Sadly what Bansky set out to mock he/she has become often the way once large amounts of money are involved and the ego gets in the way

Unless of course all the money earned is put into supporting young struggling artists

RealGhouls · 06/10/2018 11:28

It's not a copy, it's just that it wasn't shredded very thoroughly. You can still display it as is.

flumpybear · 06/10/2018 11:31

It'll be worth double the price today I'm sure!
