Coat or a tablet? Which would you choose?

Last night, I picked up my tablet to go to bed, like I've done thousands of times before. Except this time there was a crack and the screen shattered out from the corner Confused

My winter coat needs replacing, zip has broken (still wearable, but a bit of a faff to get into) and the cuffs are starting to wear through.

I've enough money to replace one...

Get the coat. Is the tablet still usable? Try fb for a local repair person they might be able to fix at relatively low cost.

Blondie1984 · 06/10/2018 05:21

You could get the zip on your coat replaced and maybe make it last another year?

cece · 06/10/2018 05:28

What's your budget?

Maybe you could do both with a bit of bargain hunting?

Jozen · 06/10/2018 05:33

See what it'll cost to get screen fixed first and go from there. If it's going to be as much as a new tablet then replace that and get coat fixed for now.
Search charity shops for coats. I got a Karen Millen coat last year for £10. It's bloody lovely.

TheChocolateTrain · 06/10/2018 05:46

It won't be as much to fix it, but will need to come out of my coat budget. We had talked about getting me a new one, but it was an either or situation and I had decided on the new coat. I need a proper hardwearing, weather-proof coat rather than something fashionable!

What's the budget? I love a challenge.

sansouci · 06/10/2018 06:03

eBay has lots of coats! New ones.

ArrivisteRevolt · 06/10/2018 06:05

You need both but the coat is more important - got to be warm.

What’s the budget? I bet we can make it stretch.

Fatted · 06/10/2018 06:07

Always the coat.

Shadow1234 · 06/10/2018 06:08

Do you have any insurance that might cover cost of tablet?
Sometimes home or bank insurance cover these as well as mobile phones.

Shadow1234 · 06/10/2018 06:08

or is it still under warranty?

flumpybear · 06/10/2018 06:25

My iPad got stood on within a few weeks of purchase - I put a sticky glass screen over it and it's now been working for two ears, perfectly well - screen protects from the cracks as you could feel them

flumpybear · 06/10/2018 06:25

Two years! Hmm

Largepiecesofcrookedwood · 06/10/2018 07:58

We replaced an iPad screen a couple of years ago with a kit from eBay.
Admittedly it was DS's old one that we were intending to use in the kitchen for the radio/ recipes, so wasn't the end of the world if we cocked it up.
It took a couple of hours and almost finished our marriage but it's still going strong nearly two years later. IIRC the kit was about £25.

Gizlotsmum · 06/10/2018 08:01

Where are you looking for coats? Mountain warehouse has a sale on. Decathlon have some nice winter coats, might leave you enough to get the tablet screen replaced?

TheChocolateTrain · 06/10/2018 08:06

No, it's ancient. No longer under warranty. The idea was always to upgrade mine once funds allow and let DS have the old one. DH has said he would rather I got it repaired than he try to change it. He's done batteries and the like before, but you need to melt the glue on the screen to change the glass.

anniehm · 06/10/2018 08:11

Try charity shops first - and see how much it costs to repair. Mountain warehouse own brand are decent coats for a reasonable price - mine has survived the Cairngorms in winter and many wet weeks elsewhere, never leaked - just make sure it has taped seams, and I prefer 3 in one jackets as they are more versatile with our varying climate.

NeeChee · 06/10/2018 08:19

Try ebay for a coat. I got a lovely warm BNWT winter coat for £30, it should have been £90. I'd had my eye on them in a certain high street shop, but couldn't afford full price. It's on its 3rd winter now.

KlutzyDraconequus · 06/10/2018 08:25

Tool station for waterproof coat, £7.50, wear layers underneath for warmth.
Amazon for fire tablet £49 (but often on sale) does internet and email fine and has games etc.

Freco010 · 06/10/2018 08:39

Amazon fire will be £29.99 on Black Friday if you can wait that long?

QueenOfTheAndals · 06/10/2018 08:48

How much do you have to spend OP? You can find some pretty decent coats by good brands on eBay or at outlet centres, and tablets don't have to be expensive to replace either.

SamanthaBrique · 06/10/2018 08:59

You probably can't get both an iPad and a designer coat but there are plenty of lower-priced options.

You've been given lots of suggestions for warm and inexpensive coats here OP, but unless you give us an idea of your budget we can't really help you.
