My state of the art hedgehog house arrived today, tonight it already has a resident, fast asleep.

we definitely need a little pic!

I want a hedgehog house now aswell....off to google...

NicoAndTheNiners · 03/10/2018 21:35

Might be worth weighing the hedgehog to see if it’s big enough to survive hibernation. I used to over winter small hedgehogs in my spare room. Really should be 600g plus.

scattercushion17 · 03/10/2018 21:37

I am very jealous! I have a hogaloo for sheltering but no visitors that I know of. Unfortunately my irregular working pattern puts paid to being able to feed them as I can't do it regularly. I agree that we need a pic please!

They should also have a round back end when balled up like shown here.

I love hedgehogs, well done on providing a house.

Prawnofthepatriarchy · 03/10/2018 21:40

Aw, how lovely!

AnoukSpirit · 03/10/2018 21:40

I can get a hedgehog house for my garden?!

TheSpottedZebra · 03/10/2018 21:41

And you have a nickname to match!

I got a new hedgehog house last week. I checked it earlier. It's still vacant Sad

LIZS · 03/10/2018 21:42

Mne has never had an occupant Sad

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 03/10/2018 21:47

I had one in my garden, our guinea-pigs had an outdoor box that was on the lawn (pigs were in their shed) , I went to lift the box and found their tenant . Piggies were SubLetting Grin

I put some extra hay in and left him to it .

They bloody stink though, how do you control the odour Nico ?

Urchinella · 03/10/2018 21:49

He arrived a week ago, the first one I've ever seen. I bought a cheap house for him that I put food in every night and rather rashly ordered a lovely wooden one in the hope he would sleep in it. I never dreamed he would move in so fast. I'm so happy.

I'm going to order one of those night vision trail camera things, so I can get pictures without disturbing him.

He's really big, I had no idea they could move so fast.

Lucky you. Well done.

GoodHeavensNoImAChicken · 03/10/2018 21:50

We bought one from the RSPCA over the summer and have a big one and a little one living in it! They pop out for cat food every night and are absolutely gorgeous, enjoy yours!

Urchinella · 03/10/2018 22:07

I really do feel so lucky, thankyou everyone.

I'd love to have hedgehogs on my back garden and DD would love a hedgehog house. I'm very jealous! Sadly where we are in London is not good for hedgehogs.

Urchinella · 03/10/2018 23:11

SW London here Vinorosso, are you central? Smallish suburban garden. Now I know what hedgehog poo looks like I realise I must of had them for some time.

starryeyed19 · 03/10/2018 23:21

I'm so jealous. My garden is tiny and paved over so I suspect any hedgehogs give us a wide berth 😭

LondonLassInTheCountry · 03/10/2018 23:25

Please dont give food in gravy or fish flavours.

Water in a saucer. Milk makes them very poorly

VanGoghsDog · 03/10/2018 23:29

I have a house but no idea if anyone has lived in it. Can't see in it.

Pinkandproud · 03/10/2018 23:37

Please link to the house!! Our garden is also small and paved over, plus pretty enclosed - I’m guessing we’re not likely to get any prickly visitors? Sad

Fairenuff · 03/10/2018 23:44

I'd love to get a house but we have a cat. I'm guessing it's not a good idea or would the hedgehog be alright with a curious cat?

SpoonBlender · 03/10/2018 23:45

We had a hedghog for a month but she's stopped coming by :( DP made a little house for her inside the logpile where we could feed her.

She confused the cats enormously!

SpoonBlender · 03/10/2018 23:47

Fairenuff We borrowed a motion activated night camera thing to see what she was up to. She'd just bumble about the garden while the cats watched her. She completely ignored them.

Rebecca36 · 03/10/2018 23:47

My cat loves our hedgehog. Don't forget hedgehogs have good armour! However they peacefully co-exist. We bought a little wooden house last year and he/she slept in it, then seemed to disappear.

Came back about May or June. Gorgeous little thing, not so little actually.

Last year two came round - one was enormous! However hedgehogs don't socialise with eachother, they chased eachother around making noises and the big one didn't come back (or at least not when I was up).

user1471430558 · 03/10/2018 23:51

I have a cat & regular hog visitors.
Initially cat was not happy but hoggies are spikey and tend not to let anything get in the way of food so now cat just ignores them.
You can make/ buy feeding stations to prevent cats eating the food and please also put out a bowl of fresh water.

SleightOfMind · 03/10/2018 23:58

We’re in SW London too and have ‘constructed’ (builders might tut) a hedgehog home at the bottom of our garden.
We’ve not glimpsed a hint of prickle and the DC are becoming dejected.
I will show them this tomorrow and get their hopes up all over again.
Pics would be great.
