My state of the art hedgehog house arrived today, tonight it already has a resident, fast asleep.

I have a cat, it's not a problem. My hedgehog house is on a paved area in a quiet corner, I piled dried leaves around it. I think as long as there are some small gaps in your fences hedgehogs might still travel through paved gardens if food is put out each evening.

DH got a hog house for his birthday. Must check for residents some time....

TheMadGardener · 04/10/2018 00:11

We have a hedgehog house (wooden, luxurious, DH made it before he got ill). It has a resident hedgehog but we also have other hogs who visit the feeding station. They don't care about the cats. We live in rural Devon but we used to have hedgehogs in our London garden too before we moved. I recently got a night vision trail camera which picks up hedgehogs, cats and rats!

Hope pictures show up.

Do the night vision cameras have to be outside or can you have them in the house? We have hogs, it would be lovely to watch them but our neighbour has let their dog shit in our garden and a camera would be good for proof.

NoSquirrels · 04/10/2018 00:22

I’ve never seen so many hedgehogs as I have living here. Late night dog walks are positively hog heaven, honestly. Like a PP, I didn’t know they could shift so fast - they have quite long legs really.

On the other hand, we used to live in S London and I saw foxes 24-7. I never see a fox here ever, so swings and roundabouts, I guess.

My cats alert the dog to the presence of a hodgeheg if there’s one in the garden but once the initial excitement is over it’s just a prickly ball so they stop caring. And I always call them away, because FLEAS!

Urchinella · 04/10/2018 00:26

I've never added a pic before, will learn.

They're great TheMadGardener

Apparently hedgehog fleas stay on hedgehogs, I hope so anyway.

@NoSquirrels I live in SE and foxes walk about like they own the place. Saw one of them eating a discarded pizza in broad daylight

Never ever seen a hedgehog though apart from when I visited my nan up north

QueenofLouisiana · 04/10/2018 05:46

I have complete hog envy. But it’s lovely that so many people are looking out for these little creatures. Hogs live locally, I wonder if they would move in to a hog house...

cantfindname · 04/10/2018 07:08

My cat camps out every summer (he is 17 and I'll never change his habits now!) and he has dried cat food and water outside the front door. About three weeks ago there was a terrific racket and much banging about so I went out to see 3 hedgehogs quarreling over the food.. big fat healthy ones, lovely to see, but goodness didn't they make a racket. I have fed and watered them every night since and have a fair idea where they are sleeping.

They cost more to feed than the cat!!

CFSKate · 04/10/2018 07:13

Urchinella which hedgehog box did you get?
TheMadGardener what camera is that? Those photos are brilliant.

NicoAndTheNiners · 04/10/2018 07:14

One of the main dangers to hedgehogs is enclosed gardens. They need to be able to travel over a mile a night to forage. People fence their gardens, etc and they can’t travel. Hedgehog highways are really important so if you can cut a little hole in the bottom of your garden fence that would help so much.

They do reckon that as numbers are dropping so much they could be extinct in as little as seven years!

And yes their fleas are hedgehog specific. I’ve had hogs with fleas in the house and the cats and dog have been fine.

WitcheryNights · 04/10/2018 07:35

I've discovered we also have hedgehogs and it's the highlight of my day seeing them! I need to get a night vision camera!

This was mine. I’ve not seen him since July, but then I’ve not been outside at the right time. He used to come past at midnight. I wonder if I should put him a house out?
His name is Horacio.

CFSKate, From Riverside Woodcraft, the Riverside Gold. I paid extra for the starter kit, which includes bowls, food and hay, very pleased with it.

Had a peek this morning and the huge pile of leaves I left outside is now stuffed inside along with the hay. I think this little one is here to stay, have to find a name now.

I think I may look slightly mad, I can't stop grinning.

You can log sightings on the hedgehog trust website.

I leave my gate open so they can come and go, but sometimes interfering people close it. I must get some holes cut.

I buy hedgehog food from the pet shop as well as putting some dried cat food out.

Sadly never seen a hedgehog in 10+years living here. Plenty of rats if I leave food out unfortunately.

WoollyMollyMonkey · 04/10/2018 12:46

I’ve not seen our hedgehog this year but I know he is visiting as he leaves lots of poo behind! it must be a big one going on the size of them! I’d love it if he lived here I must research hog houses now.

TimeIhadaNameChange · 04/10/2018 12:52

Here's mine. Had to rescue him from a bucket of water so took the opportunity for a photo. He uses his official hedgehog house as a restaurant. The cat isn't thrilled.

I haven’t had any this year but this is the infant I bottle fed last year.

He was about 3 weeks old and came in with his brother. Unfortunately the brother needed to be PTS and it looked like mum had attacked him, but the little one I raised did brilliantly.

He was later released back into the wild. He did become tame whilst living in the house but the minute I moved him outside and began to be very hands off with him, he reverted back to his wild state very quickly

Urchinella we're North London-pretty well built up around here. We do have a small garden but no hedgehog sightings around here. FIL lives a little further out than us and he sometimes has them in his garden.

Hellohah · 04/10/2018 15:07

You can buy hedgehog houses?????

I am off to get one ... I get hedgehogs all the time, I made a feeding station from bricks and a patio slab and leave food out for them. But now I know about hedgehog houses, oh my life ... I'm excited

MrsTommyBanks · 04/10/2018 16:52

I've never seen a hedgehog alive. It makes me really sad.
Love all the pics thanks for sharing.
