Palm Oil - what has it ruined for you?

Quite apart from lovely Cadbury chocolate, and creme eggs, which I've not purchased for the last 3 years, what else has palm oil ruined for you?

It's even in the kids birds eye chicken dippers, so that's them off the shopping list too.

Disgusting tasting, rainforest ruining stuff.

I’m doing really well at cutting it out of our lives but I’m struggling with washing powder, and also can anyone recommend a wholmeal sliced loaf that’s palm oil free?

TeenTimesTwo · 05/10/2018 13:20

re reducing palm oil.

We visited Bristol Zoo in the summer, and they had an area talking up sustainable palm oil over just cutting it out. The logic was that other oils take up more land to produce the same amount of oil. So if we all switch from palm to a.n.other oil then even more land will get turned to farming.
They also said that some companies use sustainable palm oil but it isn't listed as such on ingredients, e.g Waitrose own brand stuff.

This has put us in a quandry, because when we visit Jersey Zoo they talk against palm oil. Next time we go I will be asking them about Bristol's stance.

VelociraptorRex · 05/10/2018 13:31

@SnailMailFan Aldi do one without palm oil, but they don't always have it so I'm just going to make my own for now.
@TeenTimesTwo that's really confusing, surely things like olive oil still encourage other species in the area, I'd be interested to know what the verdict is on that one.
Oh and I think a PP said Bisto Best gravy is palm oil free - sadly it's not. I was going to get some but I'm glad I checked the ingredients Hmm

TheMythicalChicken · 06/10/2018 03:03

The logic was that other oils take up more land to produce the same amount of oil.

That’s not really true and also if you use different types of oil (instead of palm oil) then you diversify and don’t put too much pressure on one ingredient.

Gilead · 06/10/2018 07:27

I’m fairly sure Iceland recently announced that they were endowment brand products are palm oil free.

Gilead · 06/10/2018 07:29

Oh good grief! Own brand!

VelociraptorRex · 06/10/2018 10:42

@Gilead yes I think you're right - I think they were planning to do it by the end of this year? I find that is the big brands who are the worst offenders!

TeenTimesTwo · 06/10/2018 11:05

That’s not really true and also if you use different types of oil (instead of palm oil) then you diversify and don’t put too much pressure on one ingredient.

They had a pretty convincing display re land use being more for other oils.

If everyone bans palm oil then it isn't 'diversifying' is it? Isn't it switching to another mono culture?

kikisparks · 06/10/2018 11:07

Sunpat peanut butter has no palm oil.

kikisparks · 06/10/2018 11:12

Vego spread if you can get it is a palm oil free version of Nutella (with crunchy hazelnut bits).

I’m not totally palm oil free- as others have said I’m not sure getting rid of it altogether is the solution- but I use alternatives as much as possible.

kikisparks · 06/10/2018 11:16

As far as I can see the Hovis seed sensation bread I use has no palm oil?

ShutTheFridgeUp · 06/10/2018 11:22

Chocolate orange 😢

WTFIsAGleepglorp · 06/10/2018 13:19

Sorry, that should have read Hovis Seed Sensation contains rapeseed and palm oils.

WTFIsAGleepglorp · 06/10/2018 13:21

Most mass produced bread, flatbreads, rolls, sandwiches and cakes contain palm oil. 😪

kikisparks · 06/10/2018 13:32

Ah it’s seeded batch that I was looking at. Might be hidden behind one of the other things in it though www.hovis.co.uk/our-range/seed-sensations#

I was really shocked when I went to Costa Rica, lush jungle filled with life, plantations of palm oil, absolutely nothing living in there. But they are a fantastic source of income for poor farmers who can't live on thing air. So how do we support alternative income streams for them?

Pumpkin - we had exactly the same experience in Costa Rica - we’d be driving along a road through the jungle which had a wonderful array of different trees and flowers and wildlife then suddenly the jungle would stop and replaced with serried ranks of identical palm trees.
Our guide was very environmentally minded - if we saw a bit of plastic in the sea he always stopped the boat and picked it up and we were asked to pick up any we saw while walking or swimming.
However when I mentioned the palm oil plantations he gave a noncommittal answer - presumably because as you say they provide employment and income.
I wish I knew what the answer is

LunaLovegoodsRadishes · 06/10/2018 13:52

Thanks all. I also love Jacksons bread and I was Shock when I read that it had palm oil in it. I duly went to the kitchen and found it has palm oil and palm fat in it. Angry It's the only sliced bread that doesn't give me heartburn! So I have done some research and written an email to Jacksons quoting stuff about why palm oil is bad. And now I'm looking up recipes to make my own bread. feeling foolish We try not to eat foods with palm oil in them but as for cleaning products and cosmetics, we haven't got out of that hole yet.

WTFIsAGleepglorp · 06/10/2018 14:03

You're right about the Hovis Seeded Batch. Sorry. 😳

BunnyColvin · 06/10/2018 14:05

I was furious to see that some of Aldi's frozen veg products had palm oil in them - yes VEG !! Get your shit together Aldi! Flung it back into the freezer in disgust!

ChardonnaysPrettySister · 06/10/2018 14:26

Definitely not foolish, Luna.

I started baking to avoid palm oil, margarine and additives.

kikisparks · 06/10/2018 15:22

@WTFIsAGleepglorp that’s ok I wasn’t clear!

Charley50 · 06/10/2018 15:28

Morrison's do a 100% peanut peanut butter. No palm oil, no nuffink.

StarfishSandwich · 06/10/2018 15:34

I’ve just had to give up soya as well as dairy as DS appears to be allergic. Finding anything chocolatey, cakey or biscuity that contains no milk, soya or palm oil is almost entirely impossible. I guess i’ll Just be eating a lot of fruit!
