Palm Oil - what has it ruined for you?

Quite apart from lovely Cadbury chocolate, and creme eggs, which I've not purchased for the last 3 years, what else has palm oil ruined for you?

It's even in the kids birds eye chicken dippers, so that's them off the shopping list too.

Disgusting tasting, rainforest ruining stuff.

Linda McCartney veggie sausages.

BeardedMum · 02/10/2018 23:11

Nutella

VelociraptorRex · 02/10/2018 23:14

Bread. I'm going to start making my own, it's ridiculous.
On the plus side, Ben & Jerry's ice cream doesn't seem to have it in (can't guarantee all varieties don't, but I didn't spot any on the ingredients list for the cookie dough one, unless I missed it...

A holiday in Singapore when they burnt off the palm oil in Indonesia causing smog.

Mrsnutellatoast · 02/10/2018 23:51

Custard:(

Think Tesco sell whole earth peanut butter. Tbh when I’d realised I just gave up on it and haven’t bothered looking for the no palm oil versions. I had a kind of mental flounce about it all!

TheMythicalChicken · 03/10/2018 03:02

Good for you all for avoiding palm oil! You're all brilliant! There are more and more brands going palm free and we should support them. For instance, this is an Australian site but I know some of these brands are available in the UK:

Orangutan Alliance - certified products

FurryDice · 03/10/2018 03:37

My favourite Jackson’s bread. I thought it was the best sliced bread since, well, sliced bread.

I keep meaning to contact them to tell them to sort it out as I’m sure I’m not the only one who won’t buy their bread any more.

Meet0nTheIedge · 03/10/2018 07:00

I don't like Pip n Nut either, unfortunately palm oil does seem to be the magic ingredient for peanut butter. I thought Whole Earth did have it in, albeit sustainably sourced.

I must admit I don't avoid it rigourously, but have tried to make some palm oil free choices. I think most people either don't realise its a problem at all or only have a vague idea, or just don't have time to stand in the supermarket reading the ingredients of dozens of types of biscuit - it needs David Attenborough to do the same as he did for plastics.

ThomasShelbysBunnet · 03/10/2018 07:37

I agree it needs to be in more people's awareness, I want to be as palm oil free as possible.

I will admit to not knowing it's in custard though Blush

I didn’t know it was in custard and I admit I would never have checked custard labels for it. Also lemon curd.

Sneaky bastards.

hoopdeloop · 03/10/2018 07:46

Chocolate from Aldi and Lidl doesn’t seem to have palm oil in it and it’s very nice.

Did not even think to look at my lemon curd, off to check my jar in the fridge Sad

LucyMorningStar · 03/10/2018 07:51

Nothing. Don't know what it is in, don't care enough to find out, can't be bothered getting worked up about it.

sittingonacornflake · 03/10/2018 08:04

For those missing peanut butter - Tesco do an own brand 100% nuts peanut butter at only £1.50 a jar. So you can safely be palm oil free but also skip the salt and sugar. It took me a few days to get used to the no salt and sugar but now I find 'normal' peanut butter tastes disgustingly salty (and I love salty food!)

FluffyMcCloud · 03/10/2018 08:07

Makes life tricky for my daughter who can’t eat dairy if we are avoiding palm oil too Sad

Movingtobucks · 03/10/2018 08:16

I’ve found substitutes for most things, but haven’t been able to for things that would generally come from a supermarket bakery like doughnuts and hot cross buns. Also mince pies Sad, even the supermarket luxury ones.

Re gravy - bisto best onion gravy is safe Smile. Stuffing is harder, but we’ve found a local farm shop with some we can have.

I used to love a digestive, but now stick with rich teas and butter shortbread. Also some ‘posh’ cookies are often safe.

BitOfFun · 03/10/2018 08:18

Ambrosia custard

Fuckedoffat48b · 03/10/2018 08:19

Oat cakes

I get this but I do put a litttle grind of salt into my peanut butter on toast

Mrsnutellatoast · 03/10/2018 09:02

I can’t stand the taste of palm oil. I bought some ambrosia custard and it tasted funny, could not eat more than 2 spoons. Checked the label and there it was! And there is Shea butter in some of the Cadbury chocolate, it’s inedible!

CoffeeWithMyOxygen · 03/10/2018 09:05

I was shocked that there’s palm oil in a lot of formula. I’m pregnant now and hoping to BF, but does anyone know of any formula that doesn’t have palm oil in it in case we need it? Feels like a horrible thing to feed my baby.

bibliomania · 03/10/2018 09:27

Yikes, I thought I'd been conscientious about checking labels, but I can see I need to do better based on this thread. Lots of choc and biscuits off the list. I shop in Aldi, and they do have versions without, but you do have to read all the labels.

I'm trying to cook more from scratch anyway, so it helps give another reason.

CherryBlossom23 · 03/10/2018 09:30

Does anyone know is palm oil from a sustainable/ethical source is okay to use? I've seen this printed on a few products but not sure how true it is!

eyycarumba · 03/10/2018 09:36

Doritos. I never realised Dairy Milk use it too....shit Sad

eyycarumba · 03/10/2018 09:38

Linda McCartney veggie sausages.

and these?!? Shit on it! Quorn taste like mattress padding, we've not long made the swap from pork.
