Palm Oil - what has it ruined for you?

Quite apart from lovely Cadbury chocolate, and creme eggs, which I've not purchased for the last 3 years, what else has palm oil ruined for you?

It's even in the kids birds eye chicken dippers, so that's them off the shopping list too.

Disgusting tasting, rainforest ruining stuff.

Morrisons also do an own-brand peanut butter with no palm oil, salt or sugar, £1.78 for 340g

haba · 03/10/2018 09:55

Everything! But by cutting out everything processed I am becoming far healthier.

SunPat peanut butter doesn't have palm oil- just peanut oil, and it's very tasty. Whole earth does have palm oil.

haba · 03/10/2018 09:58

Cherry blossom- I take the view that "sustainable" is just as bad, because a) it's driving demand if seen as acceptable, b) the "sustainable" label is open to abuse as the quality assurance is dubious to say the least, mainly through bribery/corruption.
I don't buy products with sustainable palm oil in either.

There was a big webchat on the guardian about it, and it seemed that the consensus was that "sustainable" really wasn't.

Aaarrrggghh · 03/10/2018 10:00

@CoffeeWithMyOxygen

Check out Kendamil. I think that's palm oil free. Do just double check yourself though 👍

Barbayagar · 03/10/2018 10:07

Chocolate, biscuits and crisps, it's pretty much in everything processed. Nutella, all chocolate spreads really.

I like Pip n Nut peanut butter, but the Whole Earth stuff is also nice, even though it contains the ethically sourced/sustainable palm oil.

latedecember1963 · 03/10/2018 10:08

I'm ashamed to admit I hadn't realised how bad palm oil is until recently when my DH started working with someone who's really clued up about it.
I've just checked the ingredients for Pringles on the Tesco website & it lists sunflower oil but not palm oil. Does anyone know if this is correct?

almondsareforevermore · 03/10/2018 20:56

Mars bar. Just had my first for many years and so so disappointed. Small, hard, no squishy filling and tasted of nothing but sugar, The chocolate on it was like the chocolate for dogs they used to sell.

VelociraptorRex · 04/10/2018 15:34

I was so inspired by thinking about how awful palm oil is that I started my own sourdough culture yesterday, so I can make lovely, palm-oil free bread Grin

Dancergirl · 04/10/2018 15:59

I wonder if there is something wrong with my taste buds. I can't taste palm oil in anything and nothing tastes different to me.

Cadbury's still tastes the same to me.... Confused

PurpleCrazyHorse · 04/10/2018 16:06

Must admit that I knew about palm oil but haven't done anything proactive about it. Going to try to find alternatives where we can but shopping on a budget doesn't allow pricey alternatives. However I do bake cakes and biscuits, so I'll just need to double check ingredients which might work out cheaper.

IdaDown · 04/10/2018 16:07

Just checked my new foundation. Yup, it’s in there. Won’t be buying that again.

JuniLoolaPalooza · 04/10/2018 16:10

Terry's Chocolate Orange are just disgusting now. Really greasy. I should probably try harder to avoid it in things other than chocolate!

bananamonkey · 04/10/2018 16:13

Taste wise I've only noticed it in chocolate but I've also limited my carbs this year so wasn't sure if it was that either, it just tastes waxy Confused

I suspected sustainable palm oil was a bit of a con, I can recommend the Aldi Almond butter as an alternative to PB, no palm oil and cheaper than Meridian/Whole Earth.

Although we cook a lot of fresh food I really need to start looking at more labels for other stuff.

VelociraptorRex · 04/10/2018 16:38

@JuniLoolaPalooza yup it's awful isn't it, Aldi orange chocolate segments are much nicer, cheaper and palm oil free!

I'm told that you can make your own peanut butter by just whizzing peanuts up in a blender - apparently you have to do it for ages, but then at least you know what's in it and you can make t as sweet or salty as you like (disclaimer - I haven't tried this, I don't really eat it, I'm too much of a marmite addict!). Oh god, please don't let marmite contain palm oil...

Fluffycloudland77 · 04/10/2018 16:40

Clinique take the day off balm. I use grapeseed oil now.

AngryPrincess · 04/10/2018 19:09

Mostly just getting a bar of chocolate, snickers or something. And bread.

Chocolala · 04/10/2018 19:11

Everything.

But Milka don’t use it, so I’m ok on the chocolate front.

WTFIsAGleepglorp · 04/10/2018 19:46

As an added bonus, Mondelez use GMO ingredients. Angry

Upsy1981 · 04/10/2018 20:32

Nutella.

Its not so much a taste thing as a consistency thing. It leaves quite a greasy sensation on the palette.

Ohyesiam · 04/10/2018 20:34

Rainforest.

TheMythicalChicken · 04/10/2018 21:05

What about skincare and toiletries? How is everyone avoiding palm oil in personal care products?

FurryDice · 05/10/2018 05:13

I stopped eating most chocolate even before I realised it had palm oil because it tasted so different. It’s revolting now. So I don’t feel like I’m missing out.

FurryDice · 05/10/2018 05:15

Nothing. Don't know what it is in, don't care enough to find out, can't be bothered getting worked up about it.*

Well aren’t you a treasure. You’ll care one day when deforestation has fucked the planet so much that your cushy little life as you know it has been changed forever.

FurryDice · 05/10/2018 05:17

Ffs. Wish you could edit on here. The above was a quote from @LucyMorningStar and should have read:

Nothing. Don't know what it is in, don't care enough to find out, can't be bothered getting worked up about it.

VelociraptorRex · 05/10/2018 12:38

I've just been shopping and checked EVERYTHING I wanted to put in my trolley for palm oil. About half of it went straight back on the shelf, it's so annoying. Other than bulking stuff out so manufacturers can make more profit I cannot see why they do it Angry not at all grumpy that chocolate biscuits are now off the menu
