What is all this 'winning the thread' bollocks ?

I've read this several times over the last few days.
Poster (let's call them Rumplestiltskin) makes vaguely sensible post and someone pops up and says Rumplestiltskin wins the thread (or sometimes 'wins the internet' usually followed by manic GrinGrinGrin

Why do people do that - it's mad ?
There's no contest going on in the first place, and in the second place even if there were a contest why have they appointed themselves judge?
It's getting on my nerves (although I will admit to being low on patience at the moment.)

I must admit I find it mildly irritating too Grin

Although I was quite amused the other day to see someone saying it after only about 6 posts.

scrumpledtitskin · 02/10/2018 17:58

Ooh. That's nearly my name. Do I win the thread?

Seeline · 02/10/2018 18:00

No one has won the internet because I own it. The nice lady from Windows Technical Department told me I owned it yesterday, so it must be true. I certainly haven't given it to anyone else.

ScrambledSmegs · 02/10/2018 18:01

It's never after anything particularly hilarious or edifying either. It is quite annoying.

But then I use words like edifying so I'm never going to be one of life's winners.

Theorbo · 02/10/2018 18:02

I don’t have a clue but I’ve won this one

sarcasticllama · 02/10/2018 18:04

What's the prize?

ErrolTheDragon · 02/10/2018 18:09

ㅤㅤㅤㅤㅤㅤ

IdahoCrow · 02/10/2018 18:09

The prize is the unfettered joy of being flattered by a numpty on poppers.

Ellisandra · 02/10/2018 18:25

I like it. Used judiciously, I think it’s just a nice compliment. I only use it for a particularly funny or clever response. Sometimes, that comes early in a thread. Think I’ve used it about 3x in my life - one of which was earlier today, on AIBU Grin

TheFuckfaceWhisperer · 02/10/2018 18:27

It really irritates me too

MrBeansXmasTurkey · 02/10/2018 18:30

I don't know about winning the thread but I have often been accused of losing the plot.

TwitterQueen1 · 02/10/2018 18:33

I am going to appoint myself as judge and award a prize to IdahoCrow for imaginative use of English with the unfettered joy of being flattered by a numpty on poppers

I will award additional prizes as I see fit because actually, I own the internet. I am omnipotent and don't suffer from delusions of grandeur or idiocy at all

Theorbo · 02/10/2018 18:37

Seeing as I’ve won can I have a really nice prize please? Some Jo Malone stuff or someone to come and decorate the stairwell would be great.

KurriKurri · 02/10/2018 18:42

Eliisandra - you can only atone for your sins by telling 3 posters they are barking mad and shouldn't be allowed anywhere near a keyboard.

Theorbo you win this new laptop.

someone to come and decorate the stairwell

That's a bit spooky. My neighbour just knocked on my door and asked if my DP can do his. Is it a rule that all stairwells must be decorated before the end of the Tory conference? In case of inspections by Arlene Foster with the world's biggest cats bum mouth ever.

And then you win Brexit.

Theorbo · 02/10/2018 20:37

Ooooh his weird re stairwell. Yes my HA has dictated that all stairwells must be freshened up by end of conference season.
That laptop is no good to me kurri. I’d not fit it through the front door

Theorbo · 02/10/2018 20:37

How weird not his weird

JesusInTheCabbageVan · 02/10/2018 20:41

I've never won anything Sad The thought of winning the Internet is the only thing that gets me out of bed on the darkest days. I've been training and everything.

Theorbo · 02/10/2018 20:58

I once won the WI raffle and chose a terrys chocolate orange as my prize. That was an excellent moment in my life. Not won anything before or since.

MrBeansXmasTurkey · 02/10/2018 21:18

Ooh Terrys Choc Orange is a much better prize than a redecorated stairwell. I think we should lobby MN to give choc oranges to all thread winners from now on. Runners up can have a Freddo.

Dljlr · 02/10/2018 21:23

I won a raffle as a child and chose for my prize an enormous bowl of wax fruit. My parents were slobs above such things as housework and that basket represented all my twee, pledge-scented ambitions for my own very clean and tidy bedroom. I was most fucked off to discover the fruit wasn't wax at all but was in fact actual fruit.

IdahoCrow · 02/10/2018 21:27

I won a Xmas hamper once and my mum had the bottle of sherry out of it. Swiz.

To be fair I was only ten and my dad had written the tie-breaker for me.

Theorbo · 02/10/2018 21:34

A chocolate orange was great but I do really really want my stairwell doing. It was a mess when I moved in 9 years ago. I’d forego a chocolate orange if someone would paint it

ErrolTheDragon · 02/10/2018 22:26

I think redecorated stairwell would be a brilliant prize. Ours is too high for DIY and the local decorators seem booked up for years ahead.

Theorbo · 02/10/2018 22:46

Errol. We are in the same stairwell
boat.
