I'm in Tenerife and I'm bored..I think Turkey has ruined Spain for me

I know I sound absolutely unreasonable, stick with me here

I'm in an amazing hotel..but I just do not like Playas de las Americas

At Sunprime Ocean View

I've my Kindle. My friend is here with me. I miss DP and DS but that's fine

The nightlife doesn't seem to be up to much. Veronica's Strip wasn't particularly impressive maybe I'm getting old at 28

What can we do? Siam Park is booked for tomorrow. Loro Park on Wednesday

What would you do today? What is Los Cristianos like?

I've spent years holidaying in Marmaris. I think Turkey has ruined Spain for me Sad

This place is just like one street

It’s not about Veronica’s I’d it? Even if Playa is t everyone’s cup of tea there’s plenty of places in walkable distance and cabs are cheap. What about that American bar with the old retro car outside of it? Good cocktails. And further down on the beach there’s a lovely tapas bar and a stunning cocktail place. If you walk along Costa Adeje the hotels get more and more impressive. There’s a lot of wealth in Tenerife and plenty of classy places. If your missing home there’s a fabulous cafe that sells old fashioned comfort food and puddings.

You sound a miserable sod tbh. I’ve never heard of anyone leaving a holiday early unless there’s been a disaster or attack or a bereavement. I would give anything to be in Tenerife right now.

3stonedown · 01/10/2018 09:15

I'm not old (26!) but I wouldn't go to Las Americas as it would be too busy! Turkey was hell for me. I like the canaries but I like villas in walking distance to some restaurants and I don't have to talk to people.

I guess that proves that people like different types of holidays

EachandEveryone · 01/10/2018 09:19

It’s not busy at this time of the year and it has many villas I think the OP wants it busier

Starisnotanumber · 01/10/2018 09:21

There's a burger king at the airport being you should be ok don't need to have nasty Spanish food.
Enjoy your flight home

Dowser · 01/10/2018 10:31

Homesick is one thing...but Veronica’s!
Why would you?
IT REALLY IS THE PITS!!!
It’s not even in playa de las Americas...it’s in Costa adeje..certainly not the posh part.

We had a fabulous meal in Hiba Hiba last night.
Lebanese bread and dips
Falafel and dips
Lamb meshwi and rice
€12_95
We stumped up £14 in Bella Italia for a tiny bit of salmon and roasted veg last week 😱
Had a slow saunter back to the apartment through los Cris. Stopped and watched some street artists in los Cris enroute
Was about a two mile stroll, beautiful views over the bay and the backdrop of mountains . Felt perfectly safe.
Lots of different nationalities mingling together...all enjoying the lovely warm evening.

I don’t get it...surely you can go to any city in the uk and visit places that offer the kind of entertainment that Victoria’s offer...cheap booze, expensive booze, loud noisy, mainly English drunks, loud ear splitting music

What a missed opportunity

BabyGoatsInPyjamas · 01/10/2018 10:42

There are some very mean comments on this thread Hmm

BabyGoatsInPyjamas · 01/10/2018 10:43

Anyway flight is booked for tomorrow

I'm glad everyone else loves Tenerife, it's not for me

I like Turkey, Cyprus and Greece - I doubt I'll ever come back to Spain, maybe Salou with little DS but that's it

Thanks for the helpful advice

I can’t imagine writing off a whole, very diverse country based on a very touristy resort on one canary island, but each to their own!

TillyVonMilly · 01/10/2018 10:58

Shame to condemn an entire country plus its islands because you aren’t keen on one resort, bit like saying you don’t like Indian food because vindaloo is too spicy Confused

EachandEveryone · 01/10/2018 11:10

It’s very ignorant

Branleuse · 01/10/2018 11:12

your loss. So many cool places in Tenerife if you moved your arse from the tourist strip, but it doesnt sound like your heart is in it. Shame for your mate who sounds like she could have done with cheering up after her relationship breakdown, and then got stuck with you

eelbecomingforyou · 01/10/2018 11:19

Jeez, OP, this is one of the most entitled, first-world-problem threads I've ever read.

Surely you could have done some research on the island before you went, even if it was last minute? Your poor friend.

You have had millions of helpful replies here, but no. Nothing suits you. Shame your friend didn't choose somoene else to take on holiday.

You can get maccy Ds anywhere. Hmm

SoyDora · 01/10/2018 11:20

Tenerife isn’t just Playa de las Americas. Spain isn’t just Tenerife.

CrazyDaisy2018 · 01/10/2018 13:34

God I bloody love Tenerife. It's our "go to" holiday destination if we want a cheap'ish getaway.

So much to do:

  • boat trips - Atlanico Eco is the best - small boats, 6 people max
  • Mount Tiedi - take the cable car up to the top - the view is astounding
  • north of the island is beautiful, but the west in particular is spectacular - Masca is beautiful. Not been to the NE forests yet, but that's on the cards for next time.
  • Los Gigantes cliffs - another boat trip for the best view
  • stargazing tours - private if possible - we did one that involved watching the sun go down while sat on the side of the volcano with a bottle of bubbly
  • nightlife is varied - Magic Lounge is great and there's live music to be had all over the place. If you don't like the first bar you go to move on to the next bar and keep going until you find somewhere you do like. Taxis back are cheap and easy to pick up.
  • There are jeep safaris - done them to death now, but they do ones all over the island and also go over to La Gomera too
  • speaking of which, La Gomera is worth an excursion

Having said that, you're not starting in the best location. Las Americas is not great nowadays and Los Cristianos even worse. Adeje is much nicer.

pumkinspicetime · 01/10/2018 15:20

It is very silly to announce you don't like an entire country because because an island some considerable distance from the main land doesn't meet your expectations. Rather like arriving in the Shetland Islands, announcing they are pants and so you are never going to bother visiting London or anywhere else in the UK.
See if you can find a wrinkled potato to eat before you go, my dc loved them in particular.

EachandEveryone · 01/10/2018 15:22

Adeje is only w walk away isn’t it? It wouldn’t bother me staying in Playa as I’d enjoy the walk to Adeje and cheap cab back.

user1457017537 · 01/10/2018 15:36

I agree with you I went to Tenerife once and never felt the urge to return. I think Spain and the Canary Islands have been left behind and are in a bit of a time warp. The hotels are dated and in need of total refurbishment or pulling down. 5 in Spain is not equal to say Las Vegas, California or Dubai. I went to Marbella for a wedding and the room was depressing and that was in a 5 hotel. Porto Banus was dirty and unkempt.

Oblomov18 · 01/10/2018 15:51

Taking notes. Off to Tenerife in a couple of days, with 7 of ds1's football team mums. Can't wait!

Oblomov18 · 01/10/2018 15:59

Pondering how many of Dowser's recommendations we can fit in!! Grin

WhenIWasAYoungWarthog · 01/10/2018 16:31

We’re off for half term oblom and I’m looking forward to it so much. We’re staying at a hotel that only opened recently in Adeje, we normally stay at the Adeje Gran which is lovely. I’m worrying about them playing music by the pool now, I can’t concentrate on reading and relaxing if music is blaring out!

LastOneDancing · 01/10/2018 16:34

eachandeveryone Sssshhh!!

Dont tell everyone about Dalyan!
It's my favourite place.

I do agree with the OP, Turkey has ruined the Canaries for me too. IME the food is better, the people are much nicer and it's so beautiful.

Plastictattoo · 01/10/2018 16:35

F

Dowser · 01/10/2018 19:21

It’s red hot here oblomov . Was 29 at midday
Was chatting to Helen last night in the fab English bakery, croquant just up from los Cris church and she said it’s actually got hotter
I’m really crispy today and we only spent about two hours on the beach
My son said he enjoyed the Viking ship you’ll see up and down on the sea, leaves from los Cris

And the escape room 😱 in this heat. I hope it had air con

Have you got an apartment? The mercadona has a fab fresh fish counter and they will gut it for you too
We tried most of them, but kept coming back to dorada..sea bream
I was chatting to Charlene yesterday, excursiones Jesus, near los Cris..tunnel ...she will do her best to get you the best ticket prices

Going for my osteopathic massage tomorrow with my Russian therapist
He’s amazing...and that’s how I’ll feel afterwards 👍

Oblomov18 · 02/10/2018 13:07

29 you say?
Music to my ears. No, not an apartment, hotel on outskirts if LC.

GenericHamster · 02/10/2018 13:27

Wouldn't it have been more supportive to your friend, who likely needed a holiday, to enjoy the weather and relaxing and find a way to 'fake it til you make it' enjoy it?
