I'm currently "teaching" myself to play the tin whistle using Pinterest and YouTube. It's really tough and I'm crap. I just think I'm unteachable. I tried learning knitting and can cast on and do a normal row but can't figure how to purl. Have any of you lot successfully taught yourself something really fun or crafty? I'm looking for inspiration. I lose interest quickly if I don't grasp it. Blush

Painted a room...just basically looked up how to do it on the internet and then managed to redecorate my children's bedrooms...I was quite proud!

delilahbucket · 22/09/2018 20:49

I taught myself to sew seven years ago. It then became my full time profession and still is.

Outfoxed · 22/09/2018 20:50

Speak Swedish and play the ukulele. I’m suitably shite at both but technically I can do them!

ScreamingValenta · 22/09/2018 20:51

I was coming on to say that I repaired a leaking radiator using a YouTube tutorial - then I noticed the word 'fun' in your OP! Grin.

I taught myself to cook. My mum was an excellent mum but would never really let us help out in the kitchen. So much so that friends still remind me how they had to teach me how to cook pasta when I was 17. I didn't have a clue.
But I guess that's not really what your asking though is it?

sunshineandshowers21 · 22/09/2018 20:54

not really random but over the years i’ve taught myself german, french and spanish. my 11 year is currently teaching himself to play guitar by watching youtube videos.

Petalflowers · 22/09/2018 20:54

Eat marmite. Never liked it as a child but decided it would be good for me, so had a little bit everyday and now like it.

MsHomeSlice · 22/09/2018 20:58

i taught myself to crochet aged about nine from my mother's Famiy Circle magazine!

macrame, fancy knotting, mat making, knotted jewellery all self taught

photography....also self taught for night photography, star trails, and aurora

lock picking....I bough dh a set of picks and practice locks, I can do it and he cannot. I haven't tackled a real lock though so not sure if this counts.

Lwmommy · 22/09/2018 20:58

Knit, crochet and sew. I learnt from youtube and magazines.

Purl stitch is just knit stitch backwards if that helps.
So instead of having the working yarn at the back then putting the needle in from the front to the back going right and hooking the wool round, you have the working yarn at the front, and put the needle in from the back to the front going left.

Taught myself how to decorate, hang wall paper, paint etc from DIY books. I've done a few houses single handed over the years.

One time I got a decorator in to do the hall because the landing drop was high, and he was rubbish, I could see all his mistakes! Grin

Crocklebog · 22/09/2018 21:05

How to solve the Rubik's Cube!

MakeYourOwnFuckingTea · 22/09/2018 21:07

Thanks LW. That looks simple (ish). Grin
Screaming I've used YouTube for loads of stuff similar to that. I learned how to temporarily patch up a stained glass window. That was 3 years ago though. Maybe YouTube is responsible for niche companies going out of business? Confused

Sewing. Crochet.
I have learned how to a give a fuck yet but I'm working on it

joangray38 · 22/09/2018 21:09

Lost wax Jewellery carving. Learnt by buying a book, watching YouTube tutorials and very painful trial and error!

ShotsFired · 22/09/2018 21:09

Several arcane excel formula that I used once and have never needed again.

Am currently learning the finer details of PowerPoint animations too. I used to have a team member who was a whiz but now there is just me between my completely crack handed leadership team and the ppt viewing public!

Cheersthankyouta · 22/09/2018 21:11

I have taught myself to play the ukulele and to crochet! The crochet I'm quite good at. I'm not that bad at the ukulele, but can only play in front of my kids without fear. I can only just play in front of my husband when I have lubricated my synapses with loads of wine 😂

Fatted · 22/09/2018 21:11

I taught myself how to do loads of things around the house. My mum was pretty crap at teaching me a lot of things.

I use You Tube now for so many little jobs. Changing windscreen wipers, contouring make up, transforming Optimus Prime when I accidentally threw away the instructions. Grin

DontCallMeCharlotte · 22/09/2018 21:14

I taught myself to string onions.

MsHomeSlice · 22/09/2018 21:15

oh rubiks cube...I used to be able to do that but the trick for the last row has fallen out of my head

Origami! you tube is great for this.

MidLifeCrisis2017 · 22/09/2018 21:15

Use a power drill!

SneakyGremlins · 22/09/2018 21:17

I have really bad dyspraxia and have taught myself how to catch Grin sometimes without looking!

Fwend · 22/09/2018 21:17

I can do the whole "Cups" routine from Pitch Perfect thanks to YouTube.

Never needed to use it, but I'm just waiting for the right moment to break it out. Grin

Nessiej78 · 22/09/2018 21:18

My mum and I taught ourselves to juggle when I was a teenager...no idea why we did! I still have the skill all these years later! We had a circus visit our school a couple of years ago and I think my class were suitably impressed when I demonstrated my amazing clown-like abilities!!!

UpstartCrow · 22/09/2018 21:21

delilahbucket Are there any resources you could recommend? I want to learn basic tailoring and how to make lined jackets and skirts. I cant figure out what order to piece them together.

ThankyouwitharecaptalR · 22/09/2018 21:21

I taught myself how to build a wooden potting bench and shelving for my shed. I then went on to make my own raised beds. Oh, I've taught myself to build a (low) brick wall in the garden, I'm very slow at laying bricks but it looks good and I enjoy listening to the birds while I'm doing it. I've also taught myself to decorate cakes, put fencing in and landscape the garden.
I need to teach myself how to style my hair so YouTube will be called upon again 😁
