I'm currently "teaching" myself to play the tin whistle using Pinterest and YouTube. It's really tough and I'm crap. I just think I'm unteachable. I tried learning knitting and can cast on and do a normal row but can't figure how to purl. Have any of you lot successfully taught yourself something really fun or crafty? I'm looking for inspiration. I lose interest quickly if I don't grasp it. Blush

Count in binary...still don't know why

SneakyGremlins · 22/09/2018 21:27

@TheDistantSky up to how far? Shock

MiniTheMinx · 22/09/2018 21:27

Decorating, furniture restoration, dressmaking and making cushions and curtains, tiling, laying carpet and lino and how to recover chairs. I have spent hours reading about economics. I usually have some sort of project on the go that means I have to learn a new skill. I'd like to learn how to plaster, and I would like to learn how to restore antique porcelain. I think almost everything I know is self taught. I did a degree but I'd already read many of the texts before I even started. I was rarely at school, I prefer to read, research and teach myself anything I feel I need to know.

Keep up with the whistle, you'll get there.

I was coming on to say I had taught myself to raise one eyebrow independently of the other, but it looks like it's not that kind of thread! Confused

I did teach myself how to make a quilt earlier in the year, using YouTube, and I am very proud of it! Grin

dumpylittlepixie · 22/09/2018 21:41

This year I have learnt to crochet (could already knit) with bella coco on you tube which has enabled me to contribute to Woolly hugs. My next task is t,o learn to play the flute I have just bought. I think this is going to be a much longer task!

DontCallMeCharlotte · 22/09/2018 21:42

I can do the whole "Cups" routine from Pitch Perfect thanks to YouTube.

Never needed to use it, but I'm just waiting for the right moment to break it out.

That's amazing. I would be breaking it out at every meal.

HammerToFall · 22/09/2018 21:44

I taught myself to touch type when I was about 15. Ended up as a mrs secretary so did me well in the end

HammerToFall · 22/09/2018 21:45

MED secretary not mrs

Cheeseaddict1 · 22/09/2018 21:51

I REALLY want to learn how to use a sewing machine but it's so daunting and I'm so conscious of making a complete fool of myself if I went to a class

vampirethriller · 22/09/2018 22:22

Crochet

Wow these are brilliant. I'm so glad we have the technology where we can learn something brand new without leaving the house. I did practise French on duolingo every day for 6 months and got really good. I could understand what a couple of blokes sat next to me at the town hall were saying but I wasnt brave enough to butt in. They were saying the girl behind the desk was ugly but had a great backside. I did frown at them though when they noticed I was looking at them.

@Fatted I looked up the same thing the other day. I sat for ages trying to put all the pieces together, gave up and you tubed it. 😂

TeeniefaeTroon · 22/09/2018 22:41

I've fixed both my washing machine and dishwasher by using google and you tube.

Taffeta · 22/09/2018 22:42

Lots of cooking stuff

I taught myself the Greek alphabet when I was younger. For no reason Grin

CheddarIsNotTheOnlyCheese · 22/09/2018 22:47

Me and dd learned the routine from Friends on Youtube. You know the one. BlushI pulled a muscle doing the leg and arm behind the head flappy thing. We did it on Boxing day. There were bemused faces from the little members of the family.

Skittlesandbeer · 22/09/2018 22:48

This year I’ve taught myself:

How to remove (& clean) my washing machine detergent drawer and my Dyson;

The technical pigment properties of watercolour paint;

A piece of software for creating maps;

Correct propagation of succulents;

A variety of sweet & savoury pie-fillings;

How to sell internationally on eBay;

Basic face-painting techniques; and much more!

I often feel deeply grateful to be alive in an internet generation. It makes life so much richer and more efficient! Love learning!

StationsMostBodaciousCreation · 22/09/2018 22:51

@tinofbeans now THAT is something I really want to learn. Grin. Any tips?

UpstartCrow · 22/09/2018 22:53

Cheeseaddict1 Do you have a sewing machine? YouTube would be a better place to start, plus they often have a DVD manual included with them. The easiest way to learn is to watch someone else do it a few times.

tinofbeans · 22/09/2018 22:58

Stations... Um hold the other eyebrow in place while wiggling the one you wish to train... (it took a while and I can only do one!) Blush

SingingSands · 22/09/2018 23:03

Another ukulele player here, learned from a book and YouTube.

I'd love to learn how to play the piano, if anyone knows any good tutorial sites?

StationsMostBodaciousCreation · 22/09/2018 23:07

Well that sounds simple enough, thanks Tin. I’ve genuinely always wished I could do it.

RussetGusset · 22/09/2018 23:22

From YouTube I have
Learned how to chop and peel veg with minimal effort.
Cut the kids hair.
Roll a spliff.
Put rips in new jeans for dd
Straighten uPVC patio door when it wouldn't shut properly.
Make huge puffy Yorkshire puds.
Make blancmange. Ds read about it in a book and wanted to try it.
How to wrap awkward shaped gifts. (Seriously have a look. There are tons of cool vids if you're stuck)
There's loads more. These are are off the top of my head. YouTube is the best thing ever. Oh and I can watch bad lip reading videos of the walking dead and GOTs Grin

ClosestThingToCrazy · 22/09/2018 23:41

I taught myself to crochet and knit, but think I've forgotten them now. Taught myself to play guitar, bass and flute when I was younger. I'm currently teaching myself how to play the cello. It's not going too badly.

delphguelph · 22/09/2018 23:42

How to spatchcock.

Ezzie29 · 22/09/2018 23:45

Technically my mum taught me how to knit when I was a kid but she had no patience so I forgot how. Taught myself from the internet but I’m still shit and can’t get the tension. If I practised I would get better but I don’t need to as the internet also taught me how to loom knit, which I absolutely adore. A little bit more limited in what you can make but way easier and I personally prefer how the movement feels in my hands.
