I want to buy theatre tickets for my DM for Christmas. Both Jersey Boys and Wicked will be playing and I dontvknow which to buy her.

Has anyone seen the shows and can say if they enjoyed them? Anyone seen both?! Which did you prefer? Thank you Smile

Jersey boys if shes into 60s music and dancing, haven't seen wicked.

SleepingStandingUp · 22/09/2018 10:48

Wicked is AMAZING! I'd def go with Wicked. Although it's the origin story to Wizard of Oz it's a great story in its own right and actually I was never a huge fan of WOO butove Wicked.

However if she's quite old school will prefer songs she knew and real life over green witches etc then go see wicked with someone else as its grear

I would recommend wicked to anyone! Love it.

Wicked is the best show I have seen. I went my my 12 yr old daughter and 73 yr old mum. We all thought it was amazing.

MiddleClassProblem · 22/09/2018 11:44

I’ve not seen either (well Jersey boys I’ve seen the film) but Wicked is supposed to be one of the best musicals.

iklboo · 22/09/2018 11:48

Wicked is great. We've seen it twice and DS(12) loved it too.

Knowing songs the Jersey Boys (Frankie Valli & The Four Seasons) sang does not make someone 'quite old' Grin

iklboo · 22/09/2018 11:49

OMG!! I'm so sorry. You said old school.

peppaminttea · 22/09/2018 11:54

I've seen and loved both. My personal favourite is Wicked, however, I think my mum would prefer Jersey boys because the music is her era. How old is your mum?

MiddleClassProblem · 22/09/2018 11:58

I’m just saying my mum is of the age people are saying and although she listened to Frankie Valli on the radio she didn’t particularly like that kind of music. It might bring back memories but it doesn’t mean she’d really enjoy the spectacle like Wicked.

If she was into that kind of music then that’s different.

Monr0e · 22/09/2018 11:59

My mum is 62, loves Motown so I'm thinking Jersey Boys might be more her thing?

I don't know anything about it which is why I was asking as I've heard how good Wicked is and I'm pretty sure shed enjoy that also. But it's her gift so obviously want to go for the one I think she'd enjoy most.

I took DH to see Jersey Boys, not expecting to particularly like it myself. It was FAB-U-LOUS. The performances were better than the original. I can't comment on Wicked from personal experience, but everyone I know has loved it. I think you are on to a winner which ever you decide on.

JeSuisPrest · 22/09/2018 12:01

Seen both and loved both. Jersey Boys is obviously a biopic musical and quite gritty in places (FV's relationship with his daughter particularly), whereas Wicked is a complete flight of fantasy with some wonderful staging and ensemble pieces. I wouldn't be disappointed if I saw either of them again.

Monr0e · 22/09/2018 12:06

So now I'm leaning towards Wicked Confused

DM is a singer and has a fantastic voice, she loves musicals although we rarely get to go. So I know she'd love the spectacle and performance of Wicked.

What about slipping it onto conversation to do a bit of digging?

Tbh she’d probably like either.

MrsChollySawcutt · 22/09/2018 12:18

I've seen both and thoroughly recommend both.

QOD · 22/09/2018 12:21

Seen both - would go to Jersey Boys again but not Wicked although that was great too

TellMeItsNotTrue · 22/09/2018 12:22

Everyone I know who has seen wicked has been amazed by it and all have said it's their new favourite musical, this is ranging from a 6yr old to an 80yr old

Not seen or spoken about Jersey Boys so can't comment on that

Sirzy · 22/09/2018 12:24

If you aren’t sure which she would prefer I would ask her. Surprises are lovely but when it’s a High value/one off type gift then much better to talk to someone and get it right than guess and not!

Bunnyhop1502 · 22/09/2018 12:40

I’ve seen them both and loved them both for different reasons! The songs are great in both shows. If she likes Motown why not take her to Motown the musical? (If it’s still on!)

cathyandclare · 22/09/2018 12:44

I've seen both and enjoyed both despite not expecting to like Jersey Boys. If she's a musical theatre aficionado I'd go for Wicked but I'm sure she'd love both.

Shmithecat · 22/09/2018 12:47

Jersey Boys!

Anythingforacatslife · 22/09/2018 12:47

My mum and dad both loved Jersey Boys. But if she loves Motown then get tickets for that, it’s really good, we all thoroughly enjoyed it, ages 10-70!

LaPufalina · 22/09/2018 12:48

I didn't like Wicked. Seen jersey boys twice and will go again, it's so clever how they do the show!

IamPickleRick · 22/09/2018 12:50

Hated Jersey Boys, it’s soulless. Have seen a wicked 4 times though Grin DM loved Jersey Boys though.

BigGreenOlives · 22/09/2018 12:51

The people I know who enjoyed Jersey Boys are about 10 years older than your mum. Isn’t she more David Bowie era?
