Theatre tickets for DM, Jersey Boys or Wicked?

Monr0e · 22/09/2018 10:42

I want to buy theatre tickets for my DM for Christmas. Both Jersey Boys and Wicked will be playing and I dontvknow which to buy her.

Has anyone seen the shows and can say if they enjoyed them? Anyone seen both?! Which did you prefer? Thank you Smile

Not seen Jersey Boys so can't comment.

Wicked I saw with dd last year (present to her) tbh I was not wowed, can't recall why now, guess I just found it a bit silly, green faces, witches, hmm. Dd (musicals buff) loved it tho (which was the point!)

OTOH I loved les mins and found it moving and exciting.

If you do go for Wicked (and if your mum loves musicals I'm sure she'll love it) watch out for the seats. It's not in a traditional theatre, it's an old cinema and the circle is waaaay back so stalls are favourite. We sat in the resrtricted view seats at one side, restricted because of the staircase which is part of the set, and the restriction was Not an issue at all. Side view, yes, somewhat, but staircase not in the way. Seats were a lot cheaper (like, £20 less each) and as we were in row H we had a really good close view of costumes, facial expressions etc.

Look on theatre monkey for good seat reviews.

haha Les Mis not les mins!

MrsW85 · 22/09/2018 13:52

I've seen both and really enjoyed both. If I had a choice of what to see again it would be Wicked. It's incredible!

I was under impressed with wicked
Probably didn’t help that seats were a long way from stage

I’d prefer jersey boys
I’d ask her
I’d hate tix for les mis for example
I’d see that as a couple of hours of torture

Wicked! It's amazing, and although I haven't seen the current cast, I've heard the two leads are fantastic. I found Jersey Boys really dull, but that might just be me.

cazinge · 22/09/2018 15:09

I would dig e.g. 'Sue (made up friend) went to see Wicked last week, she said it was incredible' hopefully DM will respond with 'really, I'd live to see Wicked" or the opposite?!

balalalala · 22/09/2018 15:16

I've seen both and thought both were good but not quite worth the hype! Based on what you have said about your mum though I'd definitely go with Jersey boys, unless you can stretch to motown as that was the best musical I have seen!

Monr0e · 22/09/2018 16:51

We are in Manchester not London, they are both touring in January so it would be her Christmas gift. I could ask her or drop hints but to be honest I don't think she knows much about either so wouldn't particularly have a preference.

In the past she's enjoyed Funny Girl, The King and I and the Buddy Holly story.

I really appreciate every one giving their opinion, thank you.

I haven't seen Wicked, so obviously can't comment, but I'm near enough your mum's age and I absolutely loved Jersey Boys - and this is coming from someone not hugely keen on musicals!!

HashTagLil · 22/09/2018 17:04

Wicked ftw!

I had no idea what it was about apart from the obvious but absolutely adored it. I've seen it twice now!

RamsayBoltonsConscience · 22/09/2018 17:10

I took my mum to see both Jersey Boys, which she loved and Wicked - she wasn't keen. I LOVED both of them.

thisismadness77 · 22/09/2018 17:11

Seen both, was confused in Wicked! Seen Jersey Boys three times, love it.

Monr0e · 22/09/2018 17:16

Ok, swinging back to Jersey Boys now 🙈

Aarghh!

My mum is was 85 when we saw Jersey Boys in Manchester. She is very infirm but got up and danced in the aisle at the Palace theatre.
When we came out of the matinee she wanted me to find somewhere to go dancing :)

soontobeanana · 22/09/2018 17:21

I'm close to your Moms age - I've seen both. Definitely preferred Jersey Boys

AndNoneForGretchenWieners · 22/09/2018 17:25

My dad is a huge Jersey Boys fan, but my mum loathes it. It's not her music at all - she likes glam rock and indie. I think it does all depend on musical tastes and if your mum likes motown, it sounds closer to JB than Wicked.

SusieQ5604 · 22/09/2018 17:26

I loved them both

Parttimewasteoftime · 22/09/2018 17:30

Enjoyed both but Wicked is amazing! Took my Mum of a similar age loved it beautiful songs.

JeSuisPrest · 22/09/2018 18:03

I know it's not what you wanted to do but why don't you buy National Theatre tokens and get a flyer for JB & Wicked to go with them and ask her what she'd like?

Everyone seems very split Smile

SelinaMyers · 22/09/2018 18:06

Jersey Boys. Slept through Wicked.

ShackUp · 22/09/2018 18:50

Took bunch of teenagers to see Wicked recently, they all sat there open-mouthed. It is another level of amazing.

C0untDucku1a · 22/09/2018 18:53

I was underwhelmed by wicked.

reddressblueshoes · 22/09/2018 19:01

Jersey boys much better than wicked.

I think most people would recognise most of the songs, I didn't at all with wicked and didn't really enjoy it as a result. For someone your mothers age id definitely say jersey boys.

LucilleBluth · 22/09/2018 20:21

I didn't love Wicked....but then again I adored School of Rock so maybe my opinion isn't valid 😀

Marmite27 · 22/09/2018 20:25

I took my mum to see dreamboats and petticoats not knowing a thing about it (just that she had a few cds with the same title) and I absolutely adored it.

I’ve seen Wicked twice and gave her the choice of Wicked or Jersey Boys and she picked Jersey Boys.
