Do people still use iPods

notacooldad · 18/09/2018 09:13

I have several iPods but tend to use an old Classic model the most.
I usually use it in the car. However I had a teenager that I work with in the car the other day and I asked him to chose a song. The kid was baffled and asked what the hell it was!!

Normally when I have teens in the car ( work related, not my own) I usually have my phone on and they use Spotify or YouTube for music but the iPod has stumped them [ grin]

I still use my mini iPod from time to time. Mainly because I forget what music I've put on there and it can feel quite refeshing listening to songs that I had put on it 4/5 years ago and had forgotten about.

I took it to work once and a younger colleague turned round and said 'Wow! That's an old iPod!' I thought really? It still works.. and I'm only 31, thanks for making me feel ancient

stayathomer · 19/09/2018 00:35

IfNot same here and actually life was easier with Walkmans and discmans, at least when your internet dropped half the music wouldn't go off the phone. And they eat your phone battery! I use an iPod shuf but hate that you can't see the battery on it so it randomly turns off!

LaDaronne · 19/09/2018 06:29

Still use mine, or rather DH's, daily for my commute as I don't have a smartphone.

Deathraystare · 19/09/2018 07:23

Yes! I am always the last to 'get' the new technology! Actually I inherited my mum's one. I did buy a newer one but prefer the old one.

NicoAndTheNiners · 19/09/2018 08:03

brisklady with a spotify subscription you can make playlists and also download them so you can listen when offline

thegreylady · 19/09/2018 08:22

I have a very small old MP3 player which I use I need the car. I was astonished to find no CD player but a couple of USB points in my small new car. I have no way of putting new music on the MP3 as I only have an iPad no laptop or desktop computer. It isn’t an iPod but can you download music from an iPod to an iPad? Of course there is no way to access any of my hundreds of CDs in the car.

CuriousaboutSamphire · 19/09/2018 09:08

Bugger! If iTunes is going then I need to find another place for all my music! I have 2 huge Classics (180G) and a shuffle for the gym.

We use them all the time, though I don't think I've ever downloaded any music on to it I am working my way through my vinyl collection.

Ah well. More research for a new gizmo!

KingLooieCatz · 19/09/2018 09:32

DH also has one loaded with movies, which DS watches on long journeys, during wet weather on holiday and if he wakes early while we're staying with relatives. Loads of battery life, no data required and we can still use out phones.

KingLooieCatz · 19/09/2018 09:35

Also, if you have an amp and speakers type arrangement, you can connect the ipod - headphone jack to audio input. We have this set up I our kitchen. For the car I have a tiny radio transmitter that attaches to the Ipod, turns it into a tiny radio station and you tune the car stereo into it. It works with any radio actually.

CuriousaboutSamphire · 19/09/2018 09:47

I must admit the pod does seem to happily jack into just about anything you throw at it.

But I seem to be one of a dying breed - I own hard copies of my music, CDs and records take up half of my office space and my living room houses sod offly good speakers and amp. They get used a lot!

Once iTunes has gone pods won't be supported and they will eventually fizzle to a halt. And I am NOT using my phone, it has enough to do as a dictaphone, camera and laptop. It's battery barely copes with my day to day use as it is, even with regular in car top ups!

diten · 19/09/2018 09:48

I was given one as a gift and never took it out of the box! Gave it away in the end. Nothing wrong with the product, I'm sure, just not part of my routine. YouTube has all the songs.

IwantedtobeEmmaPeel · 19/09/2018 09:55

I own a sandisc clip mp3 and love it as it is so little. I have a laptop with a disc drive so I ripped a load of my CDs onto the mp3 and it also has FM radio which I love. I use mine at the gym, travelling/on holiday and sometimes when I am gardening or doing housework.

CuriousaboutSamphire · 19/09/2018 10:09

YouTube has all the songs. So you don't pay for your music? How is that sustainable?

peridito · 19/09/2018 11:00

Are MP 3 devices basically the same as iPods ,but just not Apple ?

peridito · 19/09/2018 11:02

@IwantedtobeEmmaPeel is the volume ok on your sandisc ? The reviews suggest that it's an issue turning it up ?

IwantedtobeEmmaPeel · 19/09/2018 11:11

@peridito The volume is fine for me even though my hearing is a bit impaired in one ear, but I only use it with headphones, I don't have a docking station for it. It is pretty old but still works perfectly.

lexi727 · 19/09/2018 11:23

I still have one for running!

LaDaronne · 19/09/2018 12:18

I think so peridito. I have a waterproof one for swimming, which is brilliant.

BikeRunSki · 19/09/2018 14:04

Which waterproof MP3 player do you have @LaDaronne.

CMOTDibbler · 19/09/2018 14:24

I just got the Finis bone conducting mp3 player for swimming, and it is fantastic. I did get the Sony in ear one cheap on ebay last year, and just couldn't get on with it, but the Finis gave me an hour of rock while I swam without needing adjusting in any way

LaDaronne · 19/09/2018 14:31

A cheap own-brand one from Decathlon. Works fine for my needs.

notacooldad · 19/09/2018 16:17

There's a lot of advertising on YouTube.

I meant for the bloody musicians whose music is given away for free to people who will never ever make a purchase?

I don't know how that works - well I do, but it involves making music so bloody anodyne nobody would want to listen to it, never mind pay for it Smile

notacooldad · 19/09/2018 16:30

Sorry curious I misunderstood!

I can't imagine listening to music when swimming - and I swim every day. It just would be...weird.
