Do people still use iPods

notacooldad · 18/09/2018 09:13

I have several iPods but tend to use an old Classic model the most.
I usually use it in the car. However I had a teenager that I work with in the car the other day and I asked him to chose a song. The kid was baffled and asked what the hell it was!!

Normally when I have teens in the car ( work related, not my own) I usually have my phone on and they use Spotify or YouTube for music but the iPod has stumped them [ grin]

wow...

I have an MP3 player with a little video screen, not sure of the make. Easily loaded up from the laptop, only 2GB but that takes loads of songs. And of course far better battery life, far less fragile and cheaper than the jack-of-all-trades-crap-at-all-trades chunkphones.

NicoAndTheNiners · 18/09/2018 17:50

I can believe it’ll happen though. Makes sense when they are pushing Apple Music.

Meet0nTheIedge · 18/09/2018 17:54

We still put music on manually via Itunes, but we don't download from them, we download from Amazon or rip CDs straight into Itunes and pop it on the Ipods/phones. It's old fashioned but it works for us.

Dfg15 · 18/09/2018 17:57

I used mine in my car until one day I left the car unlocked and the iPod got stolen Sad

IfNotNowThenWhen1 · 18/09/2018 18:06

I still like Cds. And when I have a drunky night in I get my records out..

MrMeSeeks · 18/09/2018 18:09

No my second ones broke. Iv given up

Fatted · 18/09/2018 18:14

Me!!! I use mine mainly in the car. The battery life is much better than my phone. I do also prefer Apple music streaming but don't want an iPhone! And Apple being Apple it doesn't work on my android phone!!

notacooldad · 18/09/2018 18:19

I wish my old ipod fit a modern speaker though. Why do they change the connections?!
That is a pain in the ass, I know but you can use your ipod on wireless speakers.

I still use and love my iPod. Storage and battery on a phone would be insufficient for the amount of music I have, and Spotify/Youtube would drain data for out and about.

Crusoe · 18/09/2018 20:14

My DS (11) has one. It’s great. He isn’t ready for a phone yet but uses the iPod for music and audio books.

XingMing · 18/09/2018 20:33

My musical history is stored on the old iPod. I've had it 12 years; it has 160GB of memory and 12,000 songs stored, but I can only play it via the base station in the kitchen. Anything newer is on my phone, and needs me to rethink playback.

Catinabeanbag · 18/09/2018 20:39

Yep, I have a classic and use it at work. Still download podcasts & music from itunes.

I don't want all my music on my phone (it wouldn't fit, for a start) in case I lose my phone because then everything's gone. For similar reasons I have an actual camera rather than take all my photos on my phone.

Twistedinknots · 18/09/2018 20:39

I have a walkman mp3 I bought it in 2009!

Still using it regularly, I hate the idea of being reliant on an internet connection (not even possible out in the sticks)

notacooldad · 18/09/2018 20:43

For similar reasons I have an actual camera rather than take all my photos on my phone.
I have learned the hard way to transfer photos from the phone at the first opportunity.
I nearly lost the photos of two months in Australia last year on a family member that died shortly after we visited.

My dh has a classic for the car. He spends hours faffing uploading more music. His playlists have amusingly punny names too. He's always looking for a new secondhand one.

HeronLanyon · 18/09/2018 21:29

I adore iPods and have a selection of beautiful old ones. Still use a few different nanos. Really want them to last as trying to reduce Iphone audio usage (cos it always leads to screen usage)!and don’t always want my phone in my pocket etc. Battery lasts forever! Sad they are old tech now.

didyouseetheflaresinthesky · 18/09/2018 22:03

I love my Ipod, would never be without one.
Why can't you put new music on them without a disk drive though? Confused

You don't HAVE to buy from Itunes, you can drag files in from other folders. I get the odd album from Itunes but not all of my music is from there.

southeastdweller · 18/09/2018 22:16

I sold mine a couple of years ago and just use my iPhone, which has 64GB storage so more than enough space for my music and everything else. Can't be bothered having several similar gadgets on the go, it's just more of a faff trying not to lose them and having one more thing to charge.

PhilODox · 18/09/2018 22:16

I have a classic that I still use daily, a shuffle I use for running, and a nano I haven't got round to unwrapping because I couldn't face ripping all my music again on a new MacBook...

Pebblesandfriends · 18/09/2018 22:21

Yes, I use mine loads ( so do the kids), still have the disc drive on the laptop!

RunningNinja79 · 18/09/2018 22:30

Yes I do. Its a nano.

I use it at work. We are allowed to have an earphone in. The internet is limited, plus I dont like to listen to music all day. so I use my ipod for audiobooks and podcasts.

Right now Ive also got 4 hours worth of songs on as Im running my first marathon in a few weeks so its there for emergency listening when my training runs get tough

DarkDarkNight · 18/09/2018 22:36

I have a brick-like Classic with my whole music collection from around 2001. I also have a nano that has a slightly different selection of music. I love a trawl through them every now and again and can lose hours and hours.

I don’t have a laptop and only have a limited amount of music on my phone and iPad, I have Amazon Prime for music but lots of things I want aren’t available or are on Unlimited so it’s a way to access music.

brisklady · 18/09/2018 22:41

My old iPod is about to die, and I don't know what to do!!! I have 17,000 songs (100GB of music) and literally hundreds of painstakingly arranged playlists. How do I preserve all of that without an iPod?! Plus, I quite often seem to drive or travel on holiday to places with non-existent wifi or mobile coverage. How do people listen to music in this scenario?? Genuinely looking for advice!

BackforGood · 18/09/2018 22:52

I use my Mp3, rather than an iPod.
My teens put newer music on it for me, so they know what it is Grin

notacooldad · 18/09/2018 23:55

brisklady
I would be buying a refurbished iPod and transferring your music across to that one. You can get them from eBay, Amazon or cash converter type places.
