I've been mulling over this on my way to and from work and I have 3 contenders:
"She came from Greece - she had a thirst for knowledge" (Pulp). It's so intriguing - you immediately want to know more about her.
Then "Wake up, Maggie - I think I've got something to say to you". I love the hesitancy - he knows he should end things but he doesn't really want to. You can picture him mulling things over while she's asleep next to him.
And then there's "Now that you're out of my life I'm so much better." (Survivor). It's so emphatic, such a clear, confident statement. There's no hand-wringing nonsense - Beyonce is just stating a fact. As a way to open a song it's pretty damn good.

What have I forgotten? What's better?

Tommy used to work on the dock. Union's been on strike, he's down on his luck, it's tough

Another Paul Simon one:
Fat Charlie the archangel sloped into the room.

I never thought it would it happen with me and the girl from Clapham

She keeps a Moët et Chandon in a pretty cabinet

"Tumble out of bed and stumble to the kitchen, pour myself a cup of ambition..."

Not really a country western fan, but I've just always liked the opening lyrics to Dolly's 9 to 5... Simple and paints a very relatable picture!!

We walked in the cold air
Freezing breath on a window pane

Six o'clock already
I was just in the middle of a dream
I was kissin' Valentino
By a crystal blue Italian stream

My Walk to Work playlist (which I've imaginatively named "Walk to Work") is coming on a pace - so many great songs I'd forgotten about.

Ode to Billie Joe takes me back - that's such a good song.

The last time I saw Richard was Detroit in '68...

'It was the third of June, another sleepy dusty Delta day, I was out chopping cotton and my brother was baking hay'

Ode to Billy Joe, by Bobby Gentry, such a spooky song - what was it they threw off the Tallahatchie Bridge?

robynadair · 17/09/2018 21:36

Baling not baking!

Benjaminbuttonschild · 17/09/2018 21:37

"I never thought it would happen with me and the girl.from Clapham"
