How do ya like them apples?

I eat apples every day. Mainly in the bath. (but that's a whole other thread).

I love pink lady, gala and braeburn. Now the problem I'm having is that it's a lottery in whether its going to juicy, crisp and lovely or powdery, disappointing and tasteless.

A poster recommended (on another thread) braeburn for this time of year. So I bought two (not risking a 6 pack) and man oh man! Big, crisp and juicy. Gorgeous!

Can anyone else recommend a good apple for this time of year? I found some raspberry rippled flesh apples in morrisons last month but they were on a limited offer.

We're fond of a Spartan apple. And a Worcester Pearmain. Mmmm with cheese.

You know how people throw bread in the lake for ducks to eat? I've always wanted to throw grapes into the bath for people to eat. It's not a perversion, I just think it'd be a laugh. DH and the kids won't oblige. If only I could find someone who likes to eat fruit in the bath...🤔

I like an egremont russet, pink lady or a jazz. I've also recently rediscovered the old school granny smith.

I like a Braeburn but it's also getting to the season for McIntosh Reds, which I love.

Not heard of either of those! Will have a look.

Grapes yes but I think throwing apples at people in the bath could possibly end in tears Grin

Celticlassie

Ooh yes mackintosh are lovely and also one the main culprits of disappointing powderyness. Shock

I'm fond of russets, they should be coming into season about now.
I'm a fruit bat over apples as well OP - I love them. I like them crispy and hard and not too sweet, perfect with a chunk of extra mature cheddar.
I had some nice ones from M and S last year - they were only there for a short period and were lovely, but I've forgotten the name - it was a variety I hadn't heard of (sorry that is really unhelpful Grin) I think they were a gold variety.

BlancheM · 17/09/2018 20:02

I like cider

KurriKurri · 17/09/2018 20:03

Just checked M and S website - they were called Envy (not golden - reddish) - I think they have them at the moment (limited season).

Namethecat · 17/09/2018 20:03

YES YES YES to Russets ! !

rightreckoner · 17/09/2018 20:05

Buy British in the Autumn and you can’t go wrong surely ? Good old Cox’s Orange Pippin at this time of year is like a blast of Spring freshnessGrin

treaclesoda · 17/09/2018 20:07

Where do you go to get 'different' apples? My local supermarkets all stock Golden Delicious (boring), Pink Ladies and Braeburns (nice) and Gala (not great). And... that's it. I'd love to get my hands on something different.

M&S sometimes sell Fuji which are lovely but so expensive that it feels a bit extravagant.

Fluffyears · 17/09/2018 20:09

I love mackintosh reds but they are becoming harder to get. That smell of autumn from them makes me cosy.

TallulahBetty · 17/09/2018 20:13

Braeburn or Jazz apples. Nowt worse than a fluffy apple Angry

bellinisurge · 17/09/2018 20:16

Egremont Russet is the apple of apples.

This time of year, cooking apples, cored, stuff with dried fruit, bake in oven and lots of cold creme fraiche

TheQueef · 17/09/2018 20:28

The thread title is my all time favourite saying.

I've given myself over to the in season bit of Lidl and just buy a couple at a time after a bag of puffed up spongy pink ladies from Asda.

Oi Blanche I discovered last year that a local community orchard makes cider and sells it at cost to residents Grin I felt like a dog with two tails it is both delightful and deadly!

KurriKurri · 17/09/2018 20:29

We have several permanent type market stalls in our town for fruit and veg. they tend to get produce from smaller local suppliers, so you get more variety. I can only get Gala, Pink Lady, Granny Smith or golden delicious from my local tesco (nad not always those all at the same time)
Morrisons some times have a few more interesting varieties, and as mentioned above occasionally M and S - but they can be expensive.

If you are in Hampshire, OP, Blackmoor Apple fair is in a couple of weeks.

Egremont Russet for sure, it's the right time of year for them now too. They're the best apples ever.
