Apologies for daily fail link but www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-6170649/BBC-DJ-Cerys-Matthews-admits-refuses-play-records-privileged-pop-stars.html
What do you think about this? Surely it doesn't matter when it comes to talent. In Lily Allen's case for example, the influence could've have been her famous parents and not just the private education. I can't imagine what music would be like without Radiohead or Joe Strummer and other musicians who've been privately educated. Ridiculous imo.

Can't stand Cerys Matthews. Never liked her, along with Lily Allen. Untalented, judgemental, holier than thou, shit for brains, both of them.

MilkTwoSugarsThanks · 15/09/2018 12:27

Who?

CrispbuttyNo1 · 15/09/2018 12:30

Anything that prevents me having to hear lily Allen can’t be that bad. Wink

Seriously though, Cerys Matthews has always been a silly twat.

Ha ha. She is privately educated herself and sang a song about two characters from the X Files!

I can’t really get my head round this- surely it’s not up to her what’s played and isn’t? Don’t they have playlists anymore? Hmm

myusernameisnotmyusername · 15/09/2018 12:31

Grincrispbutty. Love the username. Yes she isn't exactly a great loss and apart from the first two albums Coldplay either but in general I think it's silly.

OP posts:
myusernameisnotmyusername · 15/09/2018 12:32

Yes glintandglide I also thought that.

Maybe he does the 2am Tuesday slot when no one gives a shit what she plays 🤣

IhatetheArchers · 15/09/2018 12:35

I thought she was educated at a state comprehensive; anyway, it's a few hours a week on a digital radio station, so on the grand scheme of things.... Agree with the Lily Allen comment.

AssassinatedBeauty · 15/09/2018 12:36

Don't all DJs choose music for their own personal reasons? I don't think I'd do the same but I don't care that she's doing this.

StayOutOfTheForrest · 15/09/2018 12:36

She has the most annoying voice on the radio.

Can you imagine if 6Music banned Radiohead? There would be blood on the streets of Salford.

myusernameisnotmyusername · 15/09/2018 12:56

Apologies ihatethearchers she did go to a comprehensive but also went to a fee paying school. Not the end of the world I agree but she's still being an idiot.

No Genesis, Rolling Stones were grammar boys so that might be dicey. Much of the 1970s glam stuff gone. Coldplay and Radiohead as previously mentioned. I think Damon Albarn was private schooled, so Blur/Gorillaz. And that's just off the top of my head.

Yes, private schooling confers privilege. That includes access to better music education- for a start, more of your peers are likely to have had private lessons, you will have opportunities to play in decent orchestras/jazz bands etc. Your teachers may not be quite so frazzled, meaning they have time to coach you more. Etc etc. But just as it would be ludicrous to limit Team GB or the national cricket squad to only state kids, it's daft to do this.

howardmoonseyebrow · 15/09/2018 14:32

Cerys herself went to private school 🤔 I’m not sure that supports her current agenda though!

ForalltheSaints · 15/09/2018 14:59

No Lily Allen perhaps, definitely no Coldplay, but not a general ban.

EscapeToTheMoon · 15/09/2018 15:07

I loathe CM.

Take that stupid hat of woman.

Pringlesaddict · 15/09/2018 15:08

Aims to feature more females and people from working-class backgrounds

What a terrible bitch she is.

Does it fucking matter, presumably they are still being prioritised everywhere else? Does anyone shit their pants that women, bme and working class people struggle to break in to the arts in the first place?.. because form what I see and hear on the TV and radio it's a big fat no.

Taffeta · 15/09/2018 15:16

Good on her I say

It’s atrocious how much of a leg up not only musicians but most in the arts get, and don’t start me on the elitism in sport

myusernameisnotmyusername · 15/09/2018 15:23

Taffeta, surely talent is talent. It doesn't matter where you went to school!

Pringlesaddict · 15/09/2018 15:34

Well, no it shouldn't but it clearly does.

Rebecca36 · 15/09/2018 15:41

Ridiculous. People who are 'privileged' (or so called by the 'have nots'), can be as talented or not talented as anyone else. Cerys Matthews is making herself appear stupid by saying that. Is she the the Welsh singer who was on I'm a Celeb years ago? Other than that I don't know her but that one was a lovely singer. If it is her I've now gone off her!

StayOutOfTheForrest · 15/09/2018 15:58

Would this extend to classical musicians as well, or just pop music?

Would she draw the line at talented people who may go to state school but who also attend of the junior conservatoires at the weekend because paying for that might be the only way that these kids can get access to higher levels of teaching and ensemble playing that you need if you are going to be a professional classical musician.

She is being particularly moronic about this.

Birdsgottafly · 15/09/2018 16:10

""She is being particularly moronic about this.""

Have you read the article?

She hasn't banned anyone.

She wants to draw artists from a bigger pool than usually used by the BBC.

So more Female Artists that aren't from the Jay Z/Kanye stable. More British WC Artists, whose backing people don't have the clout that X Factor Winners do, for example.

If she was male, she be described as 'innovative'.

Birdsgottafly · 15/09/2018 16:13

""People who are 'privileged' (or so called by the 'have nots'), can be as talented or not talented as anyone else""

Absolutely. Unfortunately, it's all about being promoted and a lot of Artists say that they have to change and fit a pre-decided model to be looked at.

Dubiousness · 15/09/2018 16:25

Her idea is ridiculous, but I think we should ban Coldplay because they're shit Wink
