This happened to me. There was enough metal sticking out that I could grab it with pliers from the shed, turn it to open the door, and then pull it out.

MiddleClassProblem · 12/09/2018 23:55

I’ve done this and used a magnet to get it out. If not and there’s enough end try pliers?

Fatted · 12/09/2018 23:58

Stick a key in on the other side and use plyers to pull it out.

I'm sure my DH managed to get one out of our lock once by using blue tak and sticking a key in the other side!

Thank you I'll try! Got no access to the other side of the door as I'm now locked in!

That happened to me in a B&B once. They couldn’t get it out. The whole place was unlocked overnight till they could get a new lock fitted...

Spray an absolute ton of wd40 on it, get someone to push from the other side with a key.

Mummyoftwo91 · 13/09/2018 09:09

Can't get to the other side as my garden gate is locked from the inside( we don't use it) I've tried tweezers as I have a very slim pair but to no avail, cat is going mental as she wants to go out!

Have you got any really strong tape like gaffer tape/elephant tape?

Mummyoftwo91 · 13/09/2018 09:22

No not got any tape, I'm pretty useless really!

Does it help if you can turn the barrel of the lock so the key is straight up and down instead of at an angle?

HellToupee · 13/09/2018 09:37

I second Ub1k. The remnants of the key can only be extracted if the barrel is in the downward position. Magnets usually work a treat. If the lock was already a bit stiff, spray some WD40 into the barrel first.

Mummyoftwo91 · 13/09/2018 09:41

Don't have any magnets or wd40 can u see a pattern here 😂🙈

I feel we may have to fashion something out of an empty loo roll, some butter and a spoon...

Frusso · 13/09/2018 09:47

Do you have screwdrivers with magnetic ends?

Coldhandscoldheart · 13/09/2018 09:48

Can you drop the cat out of a window at least? Reduce that stress.
Can someone come round to help - you could pass each other things through the letterbox?

Mummyoftwo91 · 13/09/2018 09:50

No other window that leads out to back garden only have French style doors which I now can't get out of! Poor girl wants to get out, I tried one of these as I know it's magnetic but it didn't work

I feel totally bloody useless!

moocowmrs · 13/09/2018 09:53

Use the tweezers to turn it to the upright position then try it will come out easier then I think 💭

SoupDragon · 13/09/2018 09:54

I agree that you need to get the lock vertical to have any hope of sorting it but without pliers that will be tricky.

Coldhandscoldheart · 13/09/2018 09:55

What tools do you have other than that? Go and do a proper look for anything you might have forgotten such as sandpaper or glue or filler.
Also any people that might come & help.
Hang on, do you have a front door? How high is the locked garden gate?

SoupDragon · 13/09/2018 09:55

Can you drop the cat out of a window at least?

Only do this if you are on the ground floor 😂😂

SoupDragon · 13/09/2018 09:56

@pigletjohn can probably break in with the aforementioned toilet roll, butter and a spoon.

Coldhandscoldheart · 13/09/2018 09:56

And do you have another key for this lock?
