I’m picturing the cat being lowered down in a harness made from a sheet Grin

Mummyoftwo91 · 13/09/2018 09:56

Yes I have another key for the door!

Try and get it to the vertical position. Stick a bit of superglue to the end of a matchstick and then stick to the key (careful not to get the surround as well) and then gently pull it out. You do need to get it vertical though otherwise it won't slide out.

Mummyoftwo91 · 13/09/2018 09:59

She's waiting by the door very impatiently 😂🙄

You can do it!

moocowmrs · 13/09/2018 10:01

SoupDragon · 13/09/2018 10:01

Oh... she’s beautiful!

GrumpyOlderBloke · 13/09/2018 10:02

As @Ub1k pointed out the key is at the 7 o clock position. The key can only come out if it is at the 12 o clock position.

Challenge no1 is to turn the key clockwise to 12 o clock
Challenge no 2 is to withdraw the key.

Was the key fully inserted when you turned it and it snapped? It could be that the stub of the key needs to go further in - slightly - before it can turn. Can your tweezers move it in and out even slightly?

I assume you do not have access to tools? Needle nose pliers?

Would the prongs of a fork fit on either side of the key and enable you to turn it if the tweezers won't? Tweezers to withdraw it?

I'm wracking my brains trying to think of cutlery drawer contents to use as improvised tools here.

GrumpyOlderBloke · 13/09/2018 10:04

Ah, see you have pulled it out a little. Don't.

It needs to go fully IN, then turn to vertical, then pull out.

Mummyoftwo91 · 13/09/2018 10:05

I recon I could remove it if I can turn it so it's straight! I can wobble it abit and move it back and forth just struggling to turn it! I have scissors and tweezers as my only tools, scissors seem to be better I think because I can grip them properly

OP posts:
Coldhandscoldheart · 13/09/2018 10:08

I was thinking if you had a little sandpaper it might help the tweezers to grip it.
I can’t recall what you said about the front door - can you go out if the front door, round to the fence (I’m imagining this at the side) drop/lower on a sheet rope Grin the cat into the back garden, take a chair/ two chairs and climb over the fence with your spare key and open the door from the outside.
You might want to drop an extra chair over the fence in case it doesn’t work & you need to come back.

Coldhandscoldheart · 13/09/2018 10:09

She is a very beautiful cat.

MsHomeSlice · 13/09/2018 10:10

can you try two pennies...or maybe 50pence coins as they have a straight side....put them either side and hold them really tightly against that snib of key you have out and I am sure that would help you pivot the key to the vertical position

then your scissors, or tweezers to winkle it out.

Mummyoftwo91 · 13/09/2018 10:15

Thank you everyone for being so helpful! I will keep trying, I can't afford to pay for a locksmith for a good few weeks so I'm hoping I will be able to do it, kitty getting very vocal now!

OP posts:
Mummyoftwo91 · 13/09/2018 10:18

If I deprive her of the garden for a few weeks she might loose the plot 😂🙈

OP posts:
GrumpyOlderBloke · 13/09/2018 10:35

Perseverance and scissors sounds promising. Usually it must be fully IN before trying to turn it.

BUT was this a troublesome lock in the first place? One where you had to 'jiggle' the key a bit?

If so then you will need to do the jiggle in and out whilst turning thing with the points of the scissors.

Good luck.

Go out and buy some pliers.

If I interpret your posts correctly, this is a plastic door that leads into the back garden, so you can still get out of the front.

You may find that supermarkets sell a cheap set.

If you have any choice and can afford it, get Chrome Vanadium tools, they are better. If you are only buying one pair, get the long-nosed ones.

You will have to turn the key vertical to pull it out.

Have you got an electric drill?

this is a cheap set

This is a cheap one

This is a really good set

BlueTongueSkink · 13/09/2018 13:25

Your cat is gorgeous! misses point of thread

KatieMarieJ · 13/09/2018 13:26

I had this happen in same type of door. Can you use the half of the key you've got and operate the lock? If you can you should be able to open the door, take the lock apart (fairly straight forward and there are plenty YouTube videos to help) then essentially hold the lock face down and whack it, the broken bit should pop out straight away. :)

Mummyoftwo91 · 13/09/2018 17:08

Thanks again everyone for your help and advice, I'm going to see if I can get someone to jump my huge fence and try and push the key through the other side, don't have any tools but I may try and borrow some! I just want it open ASAP so her majesty the cat can frolic outside she's been driving me mad all day 😂

OP posts:
PigletJohn · 13/09/2018 17:45

good luck!

If you can buy or borrow a pair of pliers you can probably get the broken bit out.

If not, you can remove the ild ctlinder with a screwdriver and replace it with a new one of the correct length.

If you do need a locksmith, there are a lot of rogues advertising as "24 hour locksmith" and charging high.

Ask at a local locksmith's shop (not a hardware store) and they might offer the service when the shop shuts, or if not should know someone.
