UCAS applications in days of yore. How many universities?

Did you used to be able to apply for more universities than you can now? I seem to remember having lots of interviews in the 90s, but apparently you can only apply to five?

I applied in 1988, for Oct 89 entry.
5 University applications via UCCA
4 Polytechnic applications vis PCAS

MorningsEleven · 11/09/2018 20:15

UCAS? You young thing! In my day (1422) it was UCCA and it was 5 unis.

SeaGlassHunter · 11/09/2018 20:19

I'm sure it was six, then you narrowed it down to a first and second choice.

I'm pretty sure my list, in 1996, was:
Birmingham
Nottingham
Liverpool
Leeds
Manchester
Keele

I thought 6, listed in order of preference.

WrongKindOfFace · 11/09/2018 20:24

Maybe it was only five then? Perhaps I dreamt Warwick?

Although maybe it was UCCA as their wiki says it was six courses, reducing to five?

I’m old enough to recall handwriting the application.

5 on UCCA, didn’t but could have also applied to the polys, then there were separate applications again for things like agricultural colleges, some teacher training etc.

51Pegasusb · 11/09/2018 20:27

For me handwritten UCCA application and 6 choices. I feel very old !

userofthiswebsite · 11/09/2018 20:28

It was 6 when I did it, 5 now...

cakesonatrain · 11/09/2018 20:29

I applied to 6 in 1998. Handwritten!
Manchester
UMIST
Newcastle
Birmingham
Edinburgh
And, are, oh, I don't know!!

BobbinThreadbare123 · 11/09/2018 20:30

Six back in early 2000s when I applied.

LaPufalina · 11/09/2018 20:30

Handwritten in 1997 and six.

DickensianHysteric · 11/09/2018 20:30

I'm pretty sure I applied for 6 in 1997.

BobbinThreadbare123 · 11/09/2018 20:31

It was online, and IIRC it was only 4 if you were applying for medicine.

Stompythedinosaur · 11/09/2018 20:32

I applied to 6 back in 1997.

Of those who accepted you, you chose a first and reserve choice.

Kittykatmacbill · 11/09/2018 20:34

Six in 1998, unusually I typed up mine.

Can’t actually remember where other than where I got in...

exexpat · 11/09/2018 20:35

I applied to 5 in 1984 (ancient).

EvilTwins · 11/09/2018 20:36

I applied for 1993 entry. 5 universities and 4 polys. UCCA and PCAS. Handwritten.

Universities were Warwick, Exeter, Bristol, Aberystwyth & Norwich (UEA?) Polys were the first 4 in the book that did the subject I wanted. Not sure why my 6th form college made us all apply for PCAS but everyone had to.

GrumpyInsomniac · 11/09/2018 20:37

UCCA was 5 in 1989 when I applied. All hand-written. I imagine it went up to 6 when all the polytechnics became universities.

YippieKayakOtherBuckets · 11/09/2018 20:38

It was six when I applied for entry in 2001.

JustlikeDevon · 11/09/2018 20:38

I applied through UCAS in 1992 and applied to 3.

WrongKindOfFace · 11/09/2018 20:38

I didn’t apply for a poly so it must have been six then. I think.

OP posts:
Grammarist · 11/09/2018 20:40

UCAS- mid 90's was 6. All handwritten and it took forever!!!
I think remember applying to -
Cambridge,
Durham,
St Andrews
Leeds
Warwick
UCL

Loooong time ago!

ConsiderHerWaysAndOthers · 11/09/2018 20:40

6 when I applied (but I seem to recall friends applying for medicine got less). One firm and one insurance choice. That was 2007.

Isitmybathtimeyet · 11/09/2018 20:41

In 1994 (handwritten) it was during the transfer from UCCA to UCAS and we could apply to eight universities. Previously it had been five universities and three polys so the eight was meant as a bridging arrangement between the systems. There were no polys left by then of course so we could apply to any eight places we want to. The year after it went down to six.

AornisHades · 11/09/2018 20:41

5 in 88 for me.
