UCAS applications in days of yore. How many universities?

Did you used to be able to apply for more universities than you can now? I seem to remember having lots of interviews in the 90s, but apparently you can only apply to five?

I went in 1997 - I think I applied to 5, but they were all polys/colleges (course type)

Oxford Brookes
Canterbury Christ Church College (as it was then)
University of Teesside
College of Ripon and York St John
Somewhere in Exeter I think.

Got offers for the top 3 I think. I only put one choice as the other 2 wanted higher grades than my first choice - I got in thankfully.

I applied for 4 through PCAS only. Wasn’t very confident and didn’t do brilliantly at A level but was offered places at all 4 places without interview. Was ‘92 do a Uni by the time I arrived.

I remember us all tripping out of school to the post office nearby for postal orders to pay for this application. Only time in my life o ever needed one.

Went on a sixth form trip from Cornwall to Bristol did a higher ed fair where we picked up prospectuses. I had a guidebook to all unis, polys, colleges free from one of the banks (NatWest?). I can’t book a weekend away without trip advisor etc but based my higher ex decision on a paragraph in a free book.

Applied for 1992 entry to 5 universities via UCCA and 4 polys via PCAS. Universities were Nottingham, Keele, Sheffield, Salford and Loughborough, went to 3 open days and one interview and didn't visit the 5th as had no intention of going there. Polys were Newcastle, Oxford Brookes, Wolverhampton and I don't recall the 4th. Possibly Hull. I didn't visit any of them.

I used to love browsing prospectuses and imagining myself studying at that university.

Applied to 6 in 1999 for September 2000 entry (and still have a copy of my UCAS form - not that I hoard stuff Grin)
