I hate he bloody thing because it’s so BIG.

But we use it for jacket potatoes, ready mash Blush, and defrosting fish in a rush Blush

Could we manage without???

I hate how big ours is.
But we use ours constantly for heating up things, mashed potato, rice, jacket potatoes. Tonnes of things.

We haven't had one for about 3 years. I'd always had one previously, even as a kid - am late 30s.
We have a defrosting board, which is pretty good for small items.
Leftovers are reheated either in the oven with a lid over, in saucepan if possible, or in a steamer.

I do miss being able to quickly zap a cup of cocoa, or doing white sauce etc without endless stirring. But, we have a very small kitchen (rental house) & there's just no space for it.

We could manage without one but we had an extension and plenty of room in our new kitchen so have an integral one. I don’t have anything besides a coffee machine on the side because I hate things cluttering up the sides, we don’t have a toaster for this reason!
We do use our microwave for things like softening butter if we forgot to take a new one out the night before, or quickly defrosting something but it gets used maybe twice a week. Could definitely cope without but it’s useful.

Use it all the time, porridge, reheating tea/coffee, heating milk for coffee, reheating leftovers, popcorn, easy rice, jacket potatoes, softening butter, wheat bags for warmth in bed or aches and pains. I'd replace it if it broke.

TowerRingInferno · 10/09/2018 07:16

Yes. We only use ours for warming plates before dinner. We only have it because it came with the house. We had once once before, years ago, but gave it away because it wasted so much surface space and we didn’t really use it.

We haven't had one for about 7 years. I occasionally miss being able to quickly heat/defrost things but not enough to buy one.
I heat my cold coffee in a small milk saucepan if it has gone cold and I don't want to make a new one, though I appreciate that means washing s panGrin

silkpyjamasallday · 10/09/2018 07:22

We very rarely used one, and when we moved into our current rented flat it took me months to realise the microwave didn't work as I only really used it for heating up cups of tea. Now it's been so long I can't be bothered to try and get the landlord to replace it.

Oliversmumsarmy · 10/09/2018 07:23

Had one years ago but never used it so got rid.

Ginmakesitallok · 10/09/2018 07:23

We thinking about a new kitchen, and instead of a microwave we're going to get a combi oven.

mostdays · 10/09/2018 07:24

Could but wouldn't want to. When our last one broke we did miss it. It's not strictly necessary but it is useful.

Katjolo · 10/09/2018 07:25

We don't have one. Haven't had one in the last six years and honestly don't miss it.

bumblingbovine49 · 10/09/2018 07:25

Ah just thought of one thing people might get need it for.heating leftovers. I am happy to eat almost all leftovers cold (in fact I prefer pasta and curry etc like that) as are DS and DH but I know some people are not as weird as us.Smile

So if you eat a lot of leftovers for lunch the next day etc and you want them warm, then you might miss a microwave

firehousedog1 · 10/09/2018 07:28

Yes. We don't have a microwave. The time I feel we need one is when it comes to defreezing down the frozen lasagne I have made.

Uncreative · 10/09/2018 08:02

I’ve lived without one before (for a few years) but I really appreciate having one now. Makes life so much easier!

MustBeThin · 10/09/2018 08:05

We don't have one! I got rid when we had the kitchen done. We only ever used it for heating those little puddings you can buy that are ready made like treacle sponge or the chocolate ones with the chocolate sauce Blush
