I hate he bloody thing because it’s so BIG.

But we use it for jacket potatoes, ready mash Blush, and defrosting fish in a rush Blush

Could we manage without???

I totally could live without one. Don’t really need one at all. We seem to only heat up milk for coffee and milk for porridge, plus the occasional leftover and that’s it. No other uses for us.

QuestionableMouse · 09/09/2018 23:18

God no. I love mine and cook all sorts in it. It's fab for one person cooking.

2BorNot2Bvocal · 09/09/2018 23:20

Another who only does Uncle Bens rice in it. DH does porridge & custard.

TheSmallAssassin · 09/09/2018 23:21

I thought we could probably do without ours until someone mentioned Christmas pudding! Other than that we mainly use ours for softening the butter in the morning in the colder months and cooking frozen peas and sweetcorn.

I still use the tepid water method for defrosting things that I forgot to get out, I can't honestly see the problem if you're about to cook it thoroughly.

BigStripeyBastard · 09/09/2018 23:32

I don't have one so yes, I am living without quite well.

psicat · 09/09/2018 23:37

Used one all the time when younger but didn't have room in old house so went without for nearly 20 years - didn't miss it at all. I think food is nicer heated up on hob (plate with silver foil on top over pan of boiling water) although admit it takes a lot longer.
We now have one as was on house when moved in. I never use it, keep threatening to throw away but DH pleads to keep it.
Even popcorn tastes better on the hob 😉

GreyGardens88 · 09/09/2018 23:41

I don't have one, when I lived in my old place I really only used it for heating up uncle bens rice. I don't eat ready meals, can't stand the things

RoseMartha · 09/09/2018 23:51

Yes i could, but its handy to warm milk, jacket spuds, the odd microwave dinner, custard and sponge puddings.

fabulousathome · 09/09/2018 23:54

10 seconds to make a tub of ice cream soft enough to eat from.

hiveofmumsandvillainy · 09/09/2018 23:56

We got rid of ours around six years ago and don't miss it all apart from the odd day when I would like to start off a jacket potato!

cariadlet · 09/09/2018 23:56

I've never had one.

DP's got a weird phobia about them and thinks they're not safe. (God knows where he got that idea from.) I can't really think when I'd use one and dd only wants one so that she can melt ice-cream. (which doesn't seem to justify the money or the argument with dp)

BakedBeans47 · 09/09/2018 23:57

Yes, we haven’t had one for several years. Our last one was an integrated one and when it broke we didn’t replace it. I did think we would struggle to cope but I reckon that’s been about 7 years now we haven’t had one. When we replaced our kitchen last year we didn’t get one.

LonnyVonnyWilsonFrickett · 10/09/2018 00:00

I use mine a lot but I batch cook and freeze regularly, and DS drinks hot milk a lot. And now I've discovered microwaving Tunnocks tea cakes is a thing, I'm not sure I could give it up.

m0therofdragons · 10/09/2018 00:02

We use ours for porridge. That really is it. Could just use a pan. I've had it for 14.5 years since I left home. It's horrible inside as the paint is coming off under the plate wheels. I keep thinking we should replace it but can't justify £80 on a porridge heater!

ILiveInSalemsLot · 10/09/2018 00:06

We didn’t replace ours when it blew about 6 years ago.
We manage fine.

PickAChew · 10/09/2018 00:08

Ours gets used fairly constantly and we don't even like uncle Ben's rice.

BackforGood · 10/09/2018 00:09

I could, but I'd miss it.
I use the microwave far more often than I use the oven.

GhoulWithADragonTattoo · 10/09/2018 00:09

We've been without ours for a few years. I miss microwave popcorn and Xmas / sponge puddings. That's all...

Alonglongway · 10/09/2018 00:18

Only had one for about 5 years. My kids said they were the only ones at school without a microwave but we somehow survived. Bought after using one in a holiday house. We use it for mug cakes, pop corn, veg, rice, porridge. It’s a nice to have but not essential

MouseholeCat · 10/09/2018 00:26

Grew up without one and never thought I'd need one. But every rented place I've lived in since I moved out at 18 has had one, and they are incredibly useful.

I mainly use ours for reheating leftovers, premade stuff, or defrosting. During the summer I try to use the oven less as it makes the apartment so hot. If I'm doing a roast on a Sunday I'll bung extras in for the week (e.g. veg to roast, baked potatoes) which we can just reheat using the microwave during the week.

avamiah · 10/09/2018 00:32

I love our microwave and would never be without it or one .😊

AornisHades · 10/09/2018 00:33

We use ours a lot. Readybrek in it for breakfast, defrosting bread, heating batch cooking or leftovers, warmimg drinks etc.
We redid our kitchen and put in a combination microwave/cooker/grill so we don't have a separate thing on the worktop.

myrtleWilson · 10/09/2018 00:35

Adding to the "never had one" chorus... and to be honest I don't notice its absence at all.

DramaAlpaca · 10/09/2018 00:36

Our microwave is used several times a day by the five of us in our family for cooking, defrosting and reheating. We couldn't manage without it.

theworldistoosmall · 10/09/2018 00:37

Yes. Mine broke about a year ago. Still trying to find a reasonable excuse to get a replacement.
Potatoes I prefer in the oven, nothing gets the skin as crispy. Ready mash with a microwave? You need to get the powered stuff and boil a kettle.
And if we forgot to take something out, that's where back up plans come into play.
