Betty in Mad Men - just no need, it was the end of the series and unrealistic for a young woman to die of lung cancer

Cordelia in Angel - think they did this to get back at the actress for getting pregnant, the death was so senseless and ruined the long term story arc

Mark in ER - could he not have had a happy ending on that beach? Also it was such a rare condition.

Meg in Home and Away - this made teenage death seem so real

Chris in Stand By Me - a bad boy made good surely he was due good karma and a long life?

Luke and Han in Star Wars - just done for shock value

No one ever dies of dementia in films or tv!

It was the death of a wolf that stopped me finishing the book of A Game of Thrones. I was so upset by it that I metaphorically slammed the book shut and never picked it up again ('metaphorically' because I was on my Kindle but the emotion was too great for just a push of a button).

PurpleDaisies · 08/09/2018 15:07

Wellard on Eastenders.

MissLingoss · 08/09/2018 15:08

Another Nigel in the Archers.... although I still listen- it has been diminished by this attempt at a ratings push.

The Archers has form for this. 'Grace is Dead' was front page news in the evening papers when Grace Archer was killed off. It's probably the biggest character death story ever in UK tv and radio drama.

I remember how gutted I was to find that Will had been killed when I read the Flambards books.

I was shocked by Adric's death in Doctor Who. Not that I particularly liked him, but a companion being killed just didn't happen in Doctor Who.

And Wash. Sob.

PurpleDaisies · 08/09/2018 15:08

I know the actor died, but Leo on West Wing was a really sad one, and Mrs Lanningham too.

CorvusUmbranox · 08/09/2018 15:09

Heh, if you don’t want spoilers this really isn’t the thread to read, is it? So far spoiled for TWD and for The Tunnel. My own fault. Grin

I’d add Richard Poole from Death in Paradise to the list. I feel a little bit sad every time I remember he’s dead.

TwoBlueShoes · 08/09/2018 15:12

Finn's death in Glee. It must have been hard for the actors dealing with Cory's sudden death.

Jessewaltskylar · 08/09/2018 15:13

Confused why the upset over Mike in Breaking Bad? Surely everyone was rooting for Walt till the very end. I mentioned Hank not because he was my favourite character but because the WAY he died was awful & very undeserved. I actually screamed and shouted at the telly DH jumped out of his skin lol! That was the only time in the show I thought Walt was an almighty dick.

Agree with Mark Sloane, and also not upset over the character as such but when Miranda couldn’t get Charles Percy to safety after the shooting and he died in her arms- that got to me badly.

OMG how has no one not mentioned DENNY in Greys Anatomy! Amazing character was so invested in his and Izzy’s relationship!

flapjackfairy · 08/09/2018 15:15

Arthur in Merlin.ist depressing series ending with ?Merlin wandering the earth centuries later all alone.
My 2 daughters had the Nora virus that year and I got back from the hosp ( severe dehydration as my eldest DD had been vomiting a week without being able to keep anything down ) on Christmas Eve to my second daughter ( also v poorly and vomiting non stop ) to watch the final episode
It was younger daughters favourite programme. We were both in pieces and it was the most awful Christmas ever

concretesieve · 08/09/2018 15:19

Another mourning Nigel from The Archers.

I've just been browsing the Chalet School threads. It's not really random (and EBD has a lot of random deaths) as it reflects real horrific events but lovely Herr Marani's death. Sad

TwoBlueShoes · 08/09/2018 15:20

But, kind of the point of Breaking Bad is that by the end WW had become this crazy, money/power-obsessed ego maniac that everyone hated.

On the other hand, Mike had always been the same, solid guy and he wanted so badly to leave money for his grand daughter.

SendYouUpInFlames · 08/09/2018 15:21

Patrick Phelan aka Connor McIntyre

MissLingoss · 08/09/2018 15:22

The last episode of Merlin and Matthew's death in Downton Abbey happened the same Christmas. My mum was a fan of both, and she said how depressing it was for Christmas tv.

Davros · 08/09/2018 15:23

Wasn't the death of Grace Archer broadcast on the first night of ITV to compete for ratings? Grin

BevBrook · 08/09/2018 15:23

I would definitely say Loki, although death doesn’t seem hugely permanent in the Marvel universe.
And another big vote for Anya. She was my favourite too.
I would also count Sam from Quantum Leap. Not dead so much, but never going home. That’s harsh.
As a child I would have said Adric from Doctor Who. I loved Adric. It was a shock when I grew up, gained internet access, and found I was the only person in the world who liked him.

Megsmcgoo · 08/09/2018 15:27

The mother in himym, very frustrating end

All the good characters in Harry Potter, heart breaking! Especially Fred Weasley

Randomly Freddie’s death in skins really shook me up at the time. It was quite brutal and not nice at all. Still unsettles me a bit now and I’m not usually affected so badly, I was about 16 at the time I think 🤔

Megsmcgoo · 08/09/2018 15:30

Greys anatomy has to be Georges death, so so sad, cried my eyes out Sad

Dereks was shocking but more of a why did he have to die? After so many seasons of will they won’t they it was a bit Hmm

flapjackfairy · 08/09/2018 15:33

MissLingoss your mum was right ! tThough that was the year " The Snowman and the Snowdog " came out so that did counteract it a bit !

CoodleMoodle · 08/09/2018 15:38

So many in The Bill... Cass dying was awful, especially when Nick found her body. Andrea, Ken and Marilyn dying in the explosion. And Lance being murdered!

Also Adam Okaro's family - he drove past the accident that killed his wife and kids without knowing it was them. Heartbreaking.

Sun Hill was a dangerous place!

ErrolTheDragon · 08/09/2018 15:44

All the good characters in Harry Potter,

Except Cedric, I note. Narrative necessity - some of the others were too but I don't think anyone was invested in Cedric.

Youaremysunshine4eva · 08/09/2018 15:45

Justin in Luther

Jessewaltskylar · 08/09/2018 15:51

@TwoBlueShoes Yes I agree he had become all of those things but I think he redeemed himself when he saved Jesse’s life (albeit partly his fault he was in the situation to begin with) ... and his admission to Skylar finally was pretty decent... I don’t know I just liked Walt’s character & loved his on off friendship/partnership with Jesse. Best series I’ve seen I think!

onemouseplace · 08/09/2018 15:58

Yay to Will in Flambards! I’ve never really got over him dying and when I re-read the series again and again as a teen I usually stopped after the first two books. I did sometimes ‘treat’ myself to a good cry over the start of the third book if I was feeling especially angsty though Grin

Littlebatcalledlucille · 08/09/2018 16:02

Carl TWD also
Jesus I sobbed and sobbed like an idiot for ages! And my teenage son had to console me!
I'm my defence I was 20 weeks pregnant.
Also same show, but Shane Walsh I know he was a bastard but he gives me the fanny gallops so I resorted to watching Punisher and he's all ripped and fit.

wipes chin

TwoBlueShoes · 08/09/2018 16:03

@Jessewaltskylar

I can tell you're a BB fan by your name.

It was a great series. I heard they were originally going to kill Jesse off at the end of the first season, but they love the character and the chemistry he had with Walt so much, they kept him on. Really glad they did so.

theunsure · 08/09/2018 16:09
