Is West Side Story the best musical ever?

I just switched the telly on as it was starting. I’m sniffing already! I was listening to Elaine Paige this morning when she played a song from Blood Brothers and I was it bits doing my ironing!!! I haven’t seen many but I just adore West Side Story and B.B’s comes second.

Fiddler on the Roof is the best! Though WSS is a close second. Smile

I agree that WSS is the best musical - mind you I don't like many, but I love the music in that. Have a look on YouTube at Kiri Te Kanawa and Jose Carreras singing the soundtrack with Leonard Bernstein conducting.

Definitely. I have analysed loads (it's part of the A level music syllabus which I teach) and is definitely the best, no contest.

I'd say no I love les miserables personally have done for almost 20+ years when I saw it with school at 13.

Gypsy is the best musical ever! Brilliant, funny songs and excellent characters. I often personalise Everything's Coming Up Roses for DS.

He is rarely appreciative.Grin

The America dance scene. Could watch that over and over again.

Also love the dance at the gym. Especially as the 'gangs' shout at each other while dancing and the moment when Tony and Maria meet.

Saw it at the theatre too. Love it.

There was a really really interesting documentary on bbc 4 about it last week-about the whole process of casting the original show and about bernstein and sondheim etc etc

Les Miserable, wish I could go back in time and see it again when Philip Quast and Colm Wilkinson were in it, best show I’ve ever seen.
The Rocky Horror Picture Show, seen it many times and happily DDs are both fans!
Jesus Christ Superstar, wish I was old enough to have seen the original though the screenplay is amazing. Carl Anderson, Ted Neely and Yvonne Elliman were brilliant .

It’s time it came back to the west end. I wanted to love Gypsy as Paul O’Grady always talks about it in his books but I just couldn’t get on with it.

Ah it's my favourite film! Richard beymer and Natalie wood are both so beautiful it's got amazing music and dance sequences! It just has it all
