Anyone want to recommend their sub-£150 smartphone?

Millybingbong · 01/09/2018 07:15

This this has had it.

I want all the normal stuff like Bluetooth and four g but also one without a broken screen so I can type.

Seem to be no point in spending more if i am just going to drop it so I've capped the budget

Moto G5. Regularly tops the best of charts for a smartphone under £200. You should be able to pick one up for around £120 new.
I can also recommend Plusnet for your SIM card, from £5 up a month.

Nemesia · 01/09/2018 07:21

And with the change buy yourself a decent case!

Toptheginup · 01/09/2018 07:23

Huwaui (I think it's spelled like this) are good, reliable, up-to-date phones with all the tech that the higher end phones offer

Huawei

OnTopOfSpaghetti · 01/09/2018 07:25

My DS has this one, he's very pleased with it

I have a Moto G5, my OH has a huawei; both are much better than the iphones we previously had.

Millybingbong · 01/09/2018 07:30

Thanks they are all going on the list.
Any particular huwai one?

I have one of these

I love it.. super cheap, does everything I need it to so far, and it even survived a dunk in the bath without a fancy case. That did require a day drying out in some rice, but hey I didn't think that was bad! It's been dropped so many times.. covered in baby drool and teeth marks and it's still going. Plus it has a cute name this may or may not have been the reason I bought it in the first place

frenchfancy · 01/09/2018 07:44

Huawei eii p8 lite or Honor 9 lite. Honor is part of the Huawei group.

Toptheginup · 01/09/2018 08:17

Yes, the honor 9 is great, excellent camera! Really reasonably priced

JE17 · 01/09/2018 08:20

I can second the Wiley Fox which someone linked to above.

bigsighall · 01/09/2018 08:23

I bought a second hand iPhone and have a sim only deal. Worked out cheaper that way.

Broken11Girl · 01/09/2018 08:27

I don't like Motos, poor memory and not user-friendly. There arevarious Samsungs I'd recommend, J3, J5 etc.

user1471530109 · 01/09/2018 08:29

I have a G5. But it's 12 MTHS old now and honestly, it's in its last legs. It freezes often and sometimes turns itself off.

There is a G6 now. I think I'd buy that if looking to buy a moto. I think this also has NFC (the scanning thing) which the G5 doesn't.

I haven't had a phone in contract for years. It's much much cheaper. Also, I hate the 24mth contracts. You usually need a new phone before 2 yrs is up

user1471530109 · 01/09/2018 08:31

The motos I have had have been v v v similar to all the Samsungs I have had. Without all the extra useless apps that take up space.
You are probably right about memory. But I have an extra card for storage.

MsAwesomeDragon · 01/09/2018 08:34

I've got a Moto G6. I like it.

I had a Moto G4 as my last phone and that is still going. My mum is using my old phone now. It's 2.5 years old and the only thing even vaguely wrong with it is the charging port is slightly wobbly.

I would really recommend the Moto range. From my experience they've been excellent value for money.

donquixotedelamancha · 01/09/2018 08:41

There is a G6 now. I think I'd buy that if looking to buy a moto.

The G6 is a little expensive for OP, but the G6 Play (lower spec version, a little cheaper) has similar spec to the other £150 ish phones but loads more battery. Mine lasts over a day on very heavy use.

blinkineckmum · 01/09/2018 08:44

Yes to the Samsung J3 2017 above but it's on ebay for £100.

xyzandabc · 01/09/2018 08:47

I have the Moto G4 plus, had it a couple of years, I drop it all the time, no case and it always bounces just fine!
Daughter has the G5. I really like them.

Cailleach · 01/09/2018 08:55

I have an old Moto G3 which has never let.me down. Will go for another Moto when it finally dies.

BaronessBomburst · 01/09/2018 08:55

Check out Amazon as they've recently had deals on Motos. I think a 32GB G6 Play was around €180, so maybe slightly over budget in £s (I use the German Amazon) but with a faster CPU and a more up-to-date operating system you should get a couple more years out of it than if you buy an older model.
I'm speaking from bitter experience as my iPhone 4 is still working fine, but the OS is so old I can't update apps anymore and they just stop working. I'm down to three from about a dozen.

Horsemad · 01/09/2018 09:24

I've got a G5, had it 11mths and feel it's not that great now.

All my other phones (inc other Motos) I've had on average for 2 yrs, so this one feels like it's giving up early!

Millybingbong · 01/09/2018 17:14

bleurgh. as soon as you start reading reviews then everything goes belly up. everything has complaints and soon you start to discount everything.
slow to change apps, poor battery life or no usb-c - which of those would i like????

honor seemed perfect except it isnt usbc.

Dhalandchips · 01/09/2018 17:21

I have a Nokia something or other. Cost £100 . Does everything I want relatively quickly. I'm prone to dropping mi e in the river!
