My favourite conspiracy theory is the one by Anatoly Golytsyn spelled out in his two books new lies for old and the perestroika deception. Basically he defected to an embassy in Finland and claimed to be a high ranking member of the KGB. He said (before the fall of the Soviet Union) that the Soviet Union would pretend to collapse in order to converge institutionally with “the west” only to stage a complete takeover of the world.

It’s kind of laughable looking at how pathetic Russia is today but it’s still a brilliant conspiracy theory.
