Flies In Next Door Vacant House

Smokeahontas · 30/08/2018 20:04

The house beside me has been lying empty for 2+ years now. No one has been near it to my knowledge.

Anyway, yesterday and today there’s been a sudden explosion of flies / bluebottles in the windows. Not just one or two - I mean buzzing with them.

Phoned the council who said ‘we’ll look into that’ but God knows when. The most obvious answer is a dead rodent of some kind, but what else could it be? I mean it’s quite random after so long.

Dead body obvs

HavelockVetinari · 30/08/2018 20:05

Shock I've just been reading a scary crime novel - what if it's a body?! Confused

CormoranStrike · 30/08/2018 20:07

I’d be phoning the police I think - dead body I reckon, sorry

inquiquotiokixul · 30/08/2018 20:08

I don't think a dead rodent would be big enough to host the larvae of a huge number of insects.

Livedandlearned2 · 30/08/2018 20:10

Call 101 and report it.

WisdomSearcher · 30/08/2018 20:10

Another who is thinking a body too.

Has there been any squatting etc?

Momzilla82 · 30/08/2018 20:11

If a bird fell down the chimney and died then this could cause a significant number of flies and once they're in they just breed and have no where to get out.

3girlmama · 30/08/2018 20:14

Ring 101 as it sounds suspicious

WalkingTed · 30/08/2018 20:27

did you knoiw the orevious occupants.
do you definitely know its been empty.
what do your neighbours think

Clairetree1 · 30/08/2018 20:30

call 101 and keep well clear.

I have a friend who went to investigate something similar, and it didn't end well.

Lavalamped · 30/08/2018 20:30

Can you have a look through the window?

Clairetree1 · 30/08/2018 20:31

Can you have a look through the window?

I very strongly advise NOT going onto this property at all. Not even one or two steps over the boundary.

PristineCondition · 30/08/2018 20:33

God I must be a right nosey fuck.
My face would be pressed to the glass

notapizzaeater · 30/08/2018 20:34

What happened to the previous owners ?

Phosphorus · 30/08/2018 20:37

Clairetree it's just a load if flies. They won't buzz the OP to death. Hmm

After two years, with no signs of people, it'll just be a dead animal.

If you think it's a dead person, look through the window or letter box. If a body was at the fly stage, you'd probably smell it.

HolidayHelpPlease · 30/08/2018 20:38

Please call the police (tomorrow morning... going into an abandoned house with a possible dead person is the stuff of horror films) and then let us know!

Westiegirl3 · 30/08/2018 20:40

I'd be on the phone to 101 pronto

OddBoots · 30/08/2018 20:41

A pigeon down the chimney is most likely, assuming there is a chimney.

Friendofsadgirl · 30/08/2018 20:42

Sniff through the letterbox. You'll soon know if there's something dead.

Langpants · 30/08/2018 21:02

OMG. I want to know too! Lol. I would definitely be round checking it out.😂

Clairetree1 · 30/08/2018 21:05

Don't go anywhere near it.

If someone has died in there, there will be an investigation and you do not want your DNA t the scene. At best its a total waste of police time, at worst you could be implicated in something

Clairetree it's just a load if flies. They won't buzz the OP to death.

I wasn't suggesting they would.

I have a friend who went into a neighbour's house after seeing flies in the window. It wrecked her life. She left DNA there, and when the family claimed money was missing, she was arrested. Lost her job waiting for the trial, it never came to trial because there wasn't enough evidence against her, but the family took out a private prosecution which they lost, but the years it took, and the fact she can't get a DBS now, lost her any chance or regaining her career.

And she was only accused of theft.

She could have been accused of assault, or worse.

And even if she hadn't been accused of anything, contaminating the crime scene would still have been a colossal waste of time for everybody.

Don't go anywhere near. If there are flies all over the window its too late for you to do anything to help, anyway, if someone has died.

Thisnamechanger · 30/08/2018 21:07

I had about 200 in my flat recently. All appeared within about 2 hours. Was a dead mouse Sad

Jozen · 30/08/2018 21:16

Christ, that's a bit extreme and unfortunate for your friend, clairetree.

I'd just call the non emergency number OP and pass on the information. It's probably an animal or bird but you never know.
I would of had a sticky beak at the place too if it was easily accessible. I think most people would.

CatAnnoyance · 30/08/2018 21:19

Grim. Did you know the previous tenants? Could they have left a pet behind or something? Confused

Sounds awful, but it happens.
