Clearly I need to go back to school! Why is this wrong?

DD came home with a workbook to show us. She asked why it is wrong. Honestly, I'm stumped. Someone explain!

Good luck with the rest of the year. Confused

Thanks OhYouBadBadKitten

[Silently seethes]. DS has brought home a maths test I have to sign to say I've seen it. It's not even marked, I've no idea what they had to do and neither does DS. Looks like he just wrote random numbers in the boxes!

It's a really bad example they gave to demonstrate what they wanted done - if they had chosen 4+2 then they would have had to either have coloured in 4 dots in one set and 2 in the next if they were doing it by domino side or 5 dots in the first set and one in the next if they were doing it just by total numbers of dots.

The example they gave fulfils both those strategies so either way should be a valid attempt (I'm assuming that telepathy with the author as to what was actually intended isn't a part of the curriculum yet...).

Good luck with the maths test Grin

Are there any idenifying names or numbers or even just long worded questions that you could google to see if you could get further info about the test (or post it here!)?

I would be tempted to send a note in to sigh to say that I had seen the test but unfortunately the instructions had not been sent home and as it was so badly writtensuch it meant that it was not clear what was required. If they could ensure that the instructions are sent home then you will ensure your dc does it that evening. And then see what the school's response it...

Nope. I don't think I'm going to sign it though.

It is going to be a long year. Cannot see any point in sending home a test for you to see without the questions or it actually having been marked.

Ok, so we have ascertained he had to count things and group them by tens then write e.g. 5 in the ten box and 3 in the unit box. But we have nine boxes, no idea what he had to count and no idea if it was correct Confused

I’d stick a note on that and send it back. It now sounds like 2 teachers don’t really understand the school’s marking policy. Or worse still the marking policy itself is an issue.
