Clearly I need to go back to school! Why is this wrong?

DD came home with a workbook to show us. She asked why it is wrong. Honestly, I'm stumped. Someone explain!

It’s horseshit, that’s what it is.

And I’d be pretty pissed off with any teacher lazy enough to have demoralised an innocent bunch of 6 year olds with this utterly shoddy ‘work’.

This. ^^

I don’t think the fact that the dots are set out in 2 groups of five means that the dominoes have to show 5 and a bit for this question. It might just be a case of using a consistent model from the start or presenting numbers in a way that children become familiar with a concept that you are going to teach explicitly at a later point.

Any explanation for the teacher on this one yet OP?

Reaa · 31/08/2018 23:51

from the teacher going to sleep now

Ginormoustrawberry · 01/09/2018 00:05

Based on the previous pages they are clearly learning to count in 5’s

The answers in your OP are correct and the teachers marking is wrong!

SilentHeadphones · 05/09/2018 06:31

We have an answer!!
"The work was incomplete"
Is what was written in response to my query.

She told DD that the crosses don't mean it is wrong. It means she hadn't finished colouring out the tiles properly. still doesn't explain why there's no cross by the last one Anyway, DD is happy it's not wrong and still thinks colouring out tiles completely is boring!

My kids used to fall foul of this sort of thing - their work would demonstrate their grasp of the concept was correct but would still be 'wrong' because they hadn't coloured in neatly/properly Hmm You're not in Germany, by any chance? They love maths-by-colouring-in (which is more correct the neater it gets Confused )

marvelousways · 05/09/2018 07:25

That's terrible.Crosses clearly indicate something is marked wrong.Which is what your dd thought. If they weren't wrong they should have been ticked with a note under saying about the colouring in (although that is a really pretty and irrelevant point as well!) To be honest, I think the teacher has made a mistake with the marking and is making up excuses.
Tell your dd she did brilliantly and to ignore the silly teachers marking!

JacNaylor · 05/09/2018 07:27

Just read your update, that is ridiculously bad marking!!
A note in the margin would have worked Hmm
Still, glad your dd is happy!

SilentHeadphones · 05/09/2018 07:32

That did cross my mind. I've limited teaching experience but I would have a bracketed tick for that!

Ridiculous excuse especially as the last one wasn’t filled in properly but ticked! But I’m glad you’ve let us know. Knew it was a marking mistake!

pickingdaisies · 05/09/2018 08:17

Wow. What terrible marking, to go with an awful, ambiguous piece of homework set by a lazy teacher. Thanks for coming back to us OP, looks like DD is going to have to improve those colouring in skills if she wants to get anywhere in maths!

TeenTimesTwo · 05/09/2018 08:21

Developing pen control by colouring in is a useful thing for KS1, but not to the extent of marking maths wrong!

0hCrepe · 05/09/2018 08:26

Quite surprised to see ticks and crosses with no feedback anyway- it’s not the marking scheme most schools follow.

Rebecca36 · 05/09/2018 08:33

Thanks for the explanation Silentheadphones , I get it now.

Most peculiar maths really, not clear what was wanted. It's good for children to do puzzles of course but I question the teacher's methods. She/he obviously didn't explain what was required (on first glance I couldn't understand what was wrong), not explained what was wrong at the end. Clarity is important.

Next time will hopefully be better.

Ariela · 05/09/2018 08:51

Do we think the teacher thought there were 6 circles to fill in each side and only now her attention has been drawn to the fact it's 5 she's come up with the 'not filled in properly' to cover her mistake? Otherwise why is the last one right?

HarveySchlumpfenburger · 05/09/2018 09:09

That’s mad. If it’s not complete you either hand it back unmarked or mark it as incomplete/unfinished, marking only those that are finished.

I wouldn’t mark them as right, but definitely wouldn’t mark them as wrong either.

Flyme21 · 05/09/2018 10:24

Ask for a copy of the school marking policy.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 05/09/2018 10:35

I don't think the teacher even understood the point of the exercise.

Good luck with the rest of the year. Confused

ChocolateDoll · 05/09/2018 10:41

That’s a terrible response!!

A poorly thought out piece of work; lazy, sub-standard marking; and then can’t even admit a mistake and apologise for it!

Spectacularly poor teaching performance, especially for so early in the school year.

I’d be keeping an eye on things if I were you.

Ioki · 05/09/2018 11:18

Haven’t read whole thread but fenella (p1) is right. 9 is right because the five dots are coloured in and the sixth has been taken from the other side .

0hCrepe · 05/09/2018 13:15

You need to read the last post from OP at least! They weren’t coloured in properly. Apparently.
