Clearly I need to go back to school! Why is this wrong?

DD came home with a workbook to show us. She asked why it is wrong. Honestly, I'm stumped. Someone explain!

Yes it’s stupid to show dominoes that go up to 6 and link them with fives.
It’s not to do with starting with 5 as all the others in the other photos are done in different ways and the point is to show how different pairs of numbers can be used to make different totals. Honestly the teacher has just messed up the marking, it happens all the time (I’m a teacher), just ask her.

Chesntoots · 30/08/2018 19:32

Oh bugger, better stick to my ice-cream and Grey's Anatomy box set.

Shouldn't try to multitask!

TiredPony · 30/08/2018 19:34

Currently 103 posts with no solution. I think there are a lot of us that need to go back to school - or it's a printing error!
How old is your DD btw?

I thought you had it till I looked at the other photos!

No @hallodarknessmyoldfriend look at the OPs other pictures she's posted.

HarveySchlumpfenburger · 30/08/2018 19:42

Partitioning into 5 and a bit was my first thought. until I looked at the last question.

FlorencesHunger · 30/08/2018 19:46

I can see how 5 and 8 are wrong but not 7 as I'm assuming the seperate circles are to indicate each side of the dice so you fill in accordingly as there are only 5 circles on each seperate row so doomed to fail on that one. Stumped otherwise

cookiesaurus · 30/08/2018 19:50

Are the dice meant to count down on the left and up on the right? So... 5,4,3,2,1 then 1,2,3,4,5???

cookiesaurus · 30/08/2018 19:51

Ignore my last post... it wouldn't work with the sums!

Ohyesiam · 30/08/2018 20:02

The teacher wasn’t concentrating.

Acopyofacopy · 30/08/2018 20:37

How can the 4/4 domino and 5+3 coloured in in the left side be right, but wrong on the right side?
I think the teacher wasn’t paying attention when marking.

pickingdaisies · 30/08/2018 21:07

What is very plain is that any maths question that can be interpreted in so many different ways, is worse than useless. Presumably the teacher tried to find an exercise to tie with current learning objective, cast a quick eye over it, didn't spot that it really doesn't work. Will there be a long line of baffled parents at the classroom door in the morning demanding answers? Literally?! I HATE badly written questions. They make children feel like failures, when they're not. Your daughter clearly understands her number bonds, it's just the stupid question. Aarrgh!

SilentHeadphones · 30/08/2018 21:20

She's 6 for whoever asked.
I did ask if she corrected it afterwards and she said no. I asked why the dots were smaller and she said it was boring to colour the whole thing in. She didn't grin or anythng as she said it so I believe her, the dots get less filled in as she goes along so it fits!

I'll definitely send a note in with it to ask for clarification.

I'm afraid you'll have to wait til Monday, class teacher doesn't work Fridays and the Friday teacher didn't answer (except to tell me the above).

Childrenofthesun · 31/08/2018 17:46

I think that the aim of the exercise is to encourage pupils to partition the numbers into 5 and something. It will make mental addition easier if a child can add on 8, for example, by adding on 5 (which is easy) and 3 more. Approaches like this are more common with the introduction of new maths curriculum.

This. The last one is marked wrong and the whole task has been poorly explained. It's about partitioning numbers, but as the circles are arranged in groups of 5, the highest number in each sum should have been 5, otherwise there is no point setting out the circles in 5s like that. They needed a sentence of explanation to make it clearer though.

GhostPerfume · 31/08/2018 17:50

Its a shitty worksheet

happytoseeyou · 31/08/2018 17:57

Isn't the tick to say the whole section is correct?
They haven't put 'x' by any they consider wrong.

Theresnodisneyending · 31/08/2018 18:13

You have to match the Dominos to the boxes.

Theresnodisneyending · 31/08/2018 18:14

So, the circles correspond to the Dominos.

Theresnodisneyending · 31/08/2018 18:15

So, If the Dominos are a 5 point domino, and a 1 point domino, in the circles you have to first have a 5 solid circle then a 1 solid circle.

Theresnodisneyending · 31/08/2018 18:15

That's why 6 and 9 are correct.

SilentHeadphones · 31/08/2018 18:17

But if that's the case, why is the printed example a 3 + 3 domino followed by 5 + 1 tiles?

OP posts:
Theresnodisneyending · 31/08/2018 18:19

I cant see a 3 + 3, only the 5+1...

Theresnodisneyending · 31/08/2018 18:20

Duh...only just noticed the last one...it's not even a 6 point answer..this worksheet is wrong lol

Sunshineintheclouds · 31/08/2018 18:36

The one with the answer 8 , is wrong as one dot in the wrong place.
I can't see anything wrong with the others Confused
