Clearly I need to go back to school! Why is this wrong?

DD came home with a workbook to show us. She asked why it is wrong. Honestly, I'm stumped. Someone explain!

The dots are correct on the last one the dice are not if they should match

She is not seeing it as dominos and as two separate rows

BarbaraofSevillle · 30/08/2018 15:38

I take it there's no explanation as to what she is supposed to do?

Are the number of spots on the dominos supposed to match the number of coloured in circles? The top one, which isn't ticked, does, but one of the others do, including the bottom one, which is ticked Confused

Has the teacher not given feedback as to why it's wrong?

treaclesoda · 30/08/2018 15:39

Took me so long to post that that about ten other people got there first Grin

Ah. Clearly a trick question. There should be 6 + 6 circles to match the dice.

concretesieve · 30/08/2018 15:40

I'd say that she needs to match the number of dots on each side of the domino to the two groups of circles. Except that the circles are in groups of five, when of course, dominoes have a maximum of six dots a side!

Caveat - my maths are very average, so I'm interested in other solutions.

Alittleshaderequired · 30/08/2018 15:42

Cloud, but not if they’re faced of a dice/die as 5 is the max. But if they’re dominoes then yes.

Alittleshaderequired · 30/08/2018 15:42

faces

Enidblyton1 · 30/08/2018 15:43

You are right to be stumped, OP.
You’ll have to ask the teacher - the marking makes no sense at all.

Sallycinnamon17 · 30/08/2018 15:44

I think the confusion lies with the maximum amount they want you to use. They want you to make the numbers on the dominoes using a maximum of 5 and minimum 1 as shown in question 1. Question 5 should be 4 dots one side 5 dots on the other. I presume it’s been poorly explained. I’m guessing there will be a further sheet somewhere down the line using up to 10 dots. Her answers are technically correct but she’s not followed the instructions.

RavenLG · 30/08/2018 15:50

I think shade is correct they are dice not domino. Technically the last one should be incorrect as there should only be 5 to a face but given the lack of explanation (I’m assuming or hoping there was one with the work, just not photographed) it’s difficult to comprehend.

ShmooBooMoo · 30/08/2018 15:52

The coloured dots in each box have to correspond to how the dots appear on each of the dice.

ShmooBooMoo · 30/08/2018 15:53

Market Yep, true. Each row should be made up of six circles to make sense. Really, as it stands it makes the whole exercise a bit silly.

ShmooBooMoo · 30/08/2018 15:58

Oh, OP, I see: there are two rows of five circles to place your dots in, so the intention is for the child to choose how to arrange the dots over the two dice/ and show how they have done this by arranging dots in corresponding circles to match. I think the teacher wanted 9, so the child should have done:
5 and 4, with 5 dots coloured in one row, four dots coloured in the second.
I think it'd have to be 5 an 4 as there is no sixth circle in the row. A bit silly when a dice has six dots or whatever the posh name is for them.

ShmooBooMoo · 30/08/2018 15:59

Ha, ha... Dominoes, not dice, although I'm sure dominoes run up to six, don't they? Confused

concretesieve · 30/08/2018 15:59

Dice have six faces! On reflection, though, it could be part of the exercise that the DC need to realise that they can't use 6s?? What year group is it for?

SilentHeadphones · 30/08/2018 16:00

Ok, double checked. They are dominos.
Here is exercise 2 from the workbook.

TheQueef · 30/08/2018 16:00

Makes sense Shmoo but it is confusing as domino and die normally go up to six.

Whynotnowbaby · 30/08/2018 16:00

I don’t understand why people are saying there are only five faces on a dice, there are 6 it is a cube! The exercise seems a bit daft if you are only supposed to use 5 of the possible 6 dots on a dice to make it match the circles, I think your daughter has don’t it right and would ask the teacher for an explanation of what is wrong with it.

cricketmum84 · 30/08/2018 16:01

Aw no I'm mega confused now!! Please ask the teacher and then come back and educate us GrinGrin

TheQueef · 30/08/2018 16:06

Exercise 2 rules out Shmoo the first example.

BarbaraofSevillle · 30/08/2018 16:07

I now get it, sort of. The 10 dots in the middle column are not 5 + 5, they're 1 to 10.

So for the middle column, she just has to colour in the number of dots as stated by the number at the end.

Still don't understand why the first question is wrong though.,

BarbaraofSevillle · 30/08/2018 16:08

Maybe her colouring in of the middle dots is not extensive enough on question 1?

MouseholeCat · 30/08/2018 16:09

Was there an explanation? I can see why this would throw someone if there wasn't. Dominoes often run to 6 and aren't hugely common these days anyway so many people would assume dice.

It would have been useful to have one where the number and the dots were given, but the child had to fill in the domino.

SilentHeadphones · 30/08/2018 16:10

Then the last one of question 3 (picture1) should also be wrong!!

ShmooBooMoo · 30/08/2018 16:11

TheQueef
It is weird because the illustration of the dominoes shows each one with six dots. It doesn't look like the teacher wrote those numbers in the far left column, though. They look printed to my eye....
OP needs to have a word with that teacher and tell her to bin that workbook! Wink Grin
