Middle class towns

We drove home from holiday yesterday and passed through Marlborough where we made a lunch stop to break our journey. What a fabulous town! Everything about it felt so upmarket; the shops, smart people, etc. Where have you been that felt so 'posh'?

plominoagain yes all those towns are in Suffolk, the border pretty much follows the Waveney and then the Little Ouse.

The place I grew up is mentioned up thread, it used the be lovely, but I didn’t think it was as nice when I last visited

Thornbury and Clevedon seem nice, but I’ve only visited with work/passing through. Dunster (more a village), most of the Cotswolds villages. Stratford is lovely, ditto Leamington and Cheltenham, but I know someone who worked in both and said they have a not so nice side at night
Solihull, but not all of the borough 🙈
Worcester
Holt in Norfolk
Chester used to be lovely, haven’t been in years

All the people scoffing at Ipswich can all stay away. Definitely what is class is in the eye of the beholder.

We have loads of beautiful parks, the Waterfront marina, several top class theatres, independent art cinema, several arts festivals, a free music day, even a stuffed woolly mammoth (called Wool-I-Am). But it is unashamedly an ordinary working town , so probably doesn't count as middle class.

For that you need Aldeburgh, Southwold or Lavenham but they are full of holiday cottages and second homes so are a bit dull out of season

I do know how to spell Lewes, honestly Blush I used to live near by.

CocoDeMoll · 30/08/2018 21:56

This has turned into the most Suffolk thread I’ve ever seen on MN!

explodingid · 30/08/2018 21:59

Ashbourne (Derbyshire)
Knutsford
Wimbledon village
Dulwich village

Davros · 30/08/2018 22:07

You can't put Dulwich, Chiswick, Wimbledon etc. They are among the villages that make up the London suburbs, not separate towns although I agree, they are posh!!

Moonflower12 · 30/08/2018 22:09

I have lived in Cheltenham, Oakham and Stratford. And worked in Stamford.
All of these towns had issues. Cheltenham has some really rough areas. And quite a bad drugs problem. DP in the ambulance service- Cheltenham call to an addict was always heroin.

Oakham has a lot of hidden poverty and deprivation. And is fast becoming a garrison town.

Stamford seemed very MC but again patches of hidden poverty.

I've not lived long enough in Stratford to really know much yet.

Moonflower12 · 30/08/2018 22:10

Forgot to say I always think Nroadway is very MC.

Moonflower12 · 30/08/2018 22:10

BROADWAY!!!

OlennasWimple · 30/08/2018 22:10

Berkhamsted (or Berko...)
Stamford
St Albans
Keswick
Harrogate
Sherborne
Poundbury

Basically places with pretty architecture, a thriving market and independent shops, and a Waitrose / Booths
