Middle class towns

We drove home from holiday yesterday and passed through Marlborough where we made a lunch stop to break our journey. What a fabulous town! Everything about it felt so upmarket; the shops, smart people, etc. Where have you been that felt so 'posh'?

Waitrose didn't last very long in Durham. And anyone who thinks the city centre is posh hasn't been anywhere near the bus station or tried to get from one end of the city centre to the other through the massive stag and hen party crowds on a Saturday afternoon.

PickAChew · 01/09/2018 20:38

I think Northallerton is a very divided town. There are obvious pockets of wealth but a lot of people who are a little rougher around the edges and with a completely different accent.

IndigoSpritz · 01/09/2018 20:40

How do the accents in Northallerton differ, Pick ?

BarbaraofSevillle · 01/09/2018 20:45

The North Leeds Waitrose is also opposite in Aldi, in quite a mixed area - and the one in Otley is round the corner from an Asda that used to be a Netto.

Both desirable 'middle class' areas, but Otley has quite a big council estate and there's quite a big student population and a lot of small back to backs near to Meanwood.

IHaveBrilloHair · 01/09/2018 20:48

Durham has changed hugely over the years, it was always the center that was posh, but I'm not even sure that is now.
Shame really.

elQuintoConyo · 01/09/2018 21:07

Folkestone
Weston Super Mare (it's got SUPER in its name ffs!)
Shepshed
Minehead
Sleaford
Kings Lyn
Broadstairs

IndigoSpritz · 01/09/2018 21:24

Barbara. Waitrose in Otley and Booth's in Ilkley are my two favourite supermarkets for supplementary shopping, i.e. ready meals, pizzas and Lyons coffee bags for which I prefer not to pay full price ! I'm off to Booth's tomorrow from my up-and-coming but not-yet middle-class village.

BarbaraofSevillle · 01/09/2018 21:35

I'm the Queen of getting it cheap at Waitrose. They periodically send me £8 off £40 spend vouchers, which I use to buy stuff on special offer, own brand tonic in cans, and usually treat myself to something from the sushi counter, which I count as 'free' due to the aforementioned voucher. I do not shop there at other times.

Booths I have fallen out with due to a dreadful and hideously expensive bacon sandwich in the cafe, which had a thick sludge of margerine on it Envy

thorragnarok · 01/09/2018 21:39

Cobham.

JeremyCorbynsBeard · 01/09/2018 21:48

Watching this thread for potential short break destinations. I love a posh town, me.

Dartmouth, Devon
Holt, Norfolk
Lymington, Hampshire
Henley upon Thames

Guildford. I had the misfortune to be moved there aged 8 and managed to escape to university in London as soon as possible before moving to a big city in the north. I still have to go back to visit and it sets my teeth on edge. The over privileged teenagers with the faux Chelsea set accent, constant talk of house prices and the comments about where I live being 'so much cheaper'. Well a lot of the city I live is not but at least I can get a taxi very cheaply to the city centre and the 3 theatres, opera, ballet and the train to several other world class cities. And it is massively multicultural and a thriving hub for law and finance. But obviosuly the Yvonne Arnaud and Spectrum trumps that.

For posters saying that towns are not middle class because they are full of drug users and drinkers, what do you expect the young people in these god forsaken places to do? They are well known (and I worked on addiction previously) to be hotbeds due to boredom. I shout at the TV when parents with teenagers want to move them away from somewhere amazing to some awful market town on Escape to the Country or Location x3 .

As for Harrogate, it should fuck off to the home counties where it belongs. I have no idea why people are so keen on it. Guildford in the north.

evilharpy · 01/09/2018 22:02

Lots of Cotswold villages mentioned. I live a stone's throw from the Cotswolds and some of these places are just tourist hellholes to us. Burford springs to mind. We drove through it today and it was chock full of people with cameras wandering into the road. Bourton is prettier and nicer but also far too full of tourists.

CountFosco · 01/09/2018 22:04

The indices of deprivation is fascinating. Richmond (the original) likes to think it's better than Darlington but the west end of Darlington is far more affluent than Richmond is. Rest of the town is shockingly deprived of course.

Deliphant · 01/09/2018 22:05

Godalming. Walk round Waitrose in Golalming and you will notice a definite type of person a type - Vair posh.

Been to Lymington recently - definitely not as posh as I remembered!

CherryPavlova · 01/09/2018 22:05

Folkestone?
Weston Super Mare?
Really? Parts of Broadstairs maybe but Thanet as a whole is decidedly Brexit land.
Guildford is an ex barracks town which whilst popular with commuters still has huge areas of deprivation. The high street is nice enough as is boating on the Wey but it still has the feel of ex army quarters. Farnham is smarter.

I think you could have a mini break in most places, let's face it, you are hardly likely to go and check out the schemes, or the local Aldi.
I've said I think Durham is not as nice as it was, but for a mini break, it'd be fabulous.

carbuncleonapigsposterior · 01/09/2018 22:11

ivykaty44 · 01/09/2018 22:36

missmarples Maccies is trying to get into warwick... it doesn’t want the residents to miss out. Now KFC has closed down

MapleLeafRag · 01/09/2018 22:37

Anywhere with a “Steamer Trading” kitchenware shop.

DontCallMeCharlotte · 01/09/2018 23:23

Brighton - no.
Hove - absolutely.
Haslemere - terribly "naice".
I would add Oxted and (drum roll) Reigate.
