Middle class towns

We drove home from holiday yesterday and passed through Marlborough where we made a lunch stop to break our journey. What a fabulous town! Everything about it felt so upmarket; the shops, smart people, etc. Where have you been that felt so 'posh'?

Oh and Lytham, but when Iived up that way, St Annes wasnt considered posh, they are two places.

MargaretDribble · 01/09/2018 09:39

SaidtheShark well that's interesting. The place where I live is in the same band as Tunbridge Wells, but no-one calls this town middle class.

MargaretDribble · 01/09/2018 09:48

Great Missenden

sirlee66 · 01/09/2018 09:51

Luton

Margaret you can look at different indices, so income, health, crime etc (top left hand corner) and so on, perhaps your town does really well for some of those so it comes out better for multiple indices (if that makes any sense!).

Market Harborough
Moreton in the marsh

Dorch(ester) is my nearest town. I do tend to refer to it as that but it's not particularly middle class (apart from Waitrose on a Friday morning) I'm not one of a gaggle of identikit women, though that does sound quite fun. I think there are much more mc areas in Dorset, Sherborne for example.

Dorch has picked up a bit recently though, with the Brewery Square development and the growth of Poundbury, although that's not a universally popular view!

LittleBookofCalm · 01/09/2018 10:54

Has no one mentioned Brighton?

HolyMountain · 01/09/2018 11:02

Shrewsbury is not posh and I speak as a born , bred and still here Shrewsbury person.

Saidthesharktotheflyingfish · 01/09/2018 12:28

Erm. Richmond resident here. Not very posh.

I think people are referring to the other Richmond. In Yorkshire.

Ariela · 01/09/2018 13:41

Am I alone in having actually visited every single one of the towns mentioned?

haverhill · 01/09/2018 13:50

Peterborough has some lovely suburbs and is surrounded by pretty villages but was sadly blighted by ‘development’ in the 60s. There are many really grotty areas too.

insancerre · 01/09/2018 14:06

Ariela
So which is the winner then?

Skyejuly · 01/09/2018 14:45

Just been up to Aldeburgh for fish and chips.

Middle class a plenty 100%

Ariela · 01/09/2018 14:49

It's a tough call but somewhere between Marlow (apart from the parking) Hexham (just a touch too many tourists) Burford (ruined by the traffic negotiated to actually get there), Bourton-on-the-water (ditto), Stow-on-the-Wold (less so), Petworth (too antiquey-shop) & Southwold (although I get the impression Southwold tries too hard to be upper MC) Marlborough (last time I went had too many pretentious tea shops).
Although actually Henley is my nearest town, I do absolutely love it, there's something nice about the river on a sunny day...and the fact parking is free till 10am and after 3 on a Saturday, has a Waitrose, an independent cinema etc but just don't think it is MC enough, too posh in places, yet has some poor areas too. Maybe I know it too well?

ivykaty44 · 01/09/2018 14:54

Anywhere that has a Waitrose or Booths tbh as that is the market they are seeking

BikeRunSki · 01/09/2018 14:54

Bruton, Somerset

Skyejuly · 01/09/2018 15:16

Hythe in new forest has a waitrose and its a working class dump!

BikeRunSki · 01/09/2018 15:19

The Waitrose thing doesn’t work since Waitrose took over a load of Safeway’s about 10 years ago.

Needsleepneedsleep · 01/09/2018 15:25

**Skyejuly

Hythe in new forest has a waitrose and its a working class dump!**

Omg yes forgot about Hythe! Many people there believe they are MC and something special because of where they live...but as pp says, it's a working class dump!

MargaretDribble · 01/09/2018 15:37

BikeRunSki I was having the same thought. Our nearest Waitrose was a Safety.

MargaretDribble · 01/09/2018 15:38

Safeway, sorry.

CocoDeMoll · 01/09/2018 16:29

Skyjuly Sax has a Waitrose. Buff said

CocoDeMoll · 01/09/2018 16:30

Nuff said Wink

ivykaty44 · 01/09/2018 17:33

Interestingly Leamington Spa has reject many applications for Waitrose to open a store, leaving them eventually opening a store in nearby Kenilworth
