My partner and I have been together over 10 yrs and have decided to get married. We have booked most of the wedding now and are ready to tell the family.

Oh wants to get an engagement ring but I need to go to so I can choose it and try it on.

Tell me how you got engaged and when u got your ring please.

I'm dying to hear how others do it.

DH bought my ring in secret. I had no idea.

He proposed to me in front of the Hogwarts castle at the Harry Potter Studio Tour. He asked a random stranger to film it and now enjoys laughing at me being in absolute bits when he got down on one knee. Honestly, it’s just a 3 minute video of me crying 😂

He did well with the ring too, even though it’s nothing like what I would have chosen! I absolutely love it :)

BigBlueBubble · 29/08/2018 18:03

Mine was crap. I’d already told DH that it was important for me to have a special memory and a story. He still thought it was a good idea to propose after dinner in a cheap restaurant. I don’t remember what he said because I was drunk (which he should have made sure didn’t happen because he knew he was going to propose). My hands were all sticky because I’d had bbq ribs. A member of staff interrupted in the middle of it and he had to ask them to leave. And then we got the bus home and had a bottle of wine which I’d put in the fridge myself. No preparation or effort on his part, which hurt even more because he knew how important it was to me. I’m still gutted about it and it was years ago.

Congratulations! My husband had bought my ring, proposed at home, went out for dinner and wine to celebrate. Perfect.

My partner booked a surprise trip to Barcelona because he knew it was one of my favourite places, fancy hotel etc. Said it was just because he had some leave from work and fancied getting away for a few days. Second night he took me to a lovely restaurant then back to the rooftop of the hotel where there was a pool and seating and the most amazing view over Barcelona. It was just me and him up there. He then got down on one knee! The ring didn't fit but we had it re sized when we got home. It was perfect.

hersandhis · 29/08/2018 18:18

@Stephisaur My Partner and I went to the studios on my birthday (it was a milestone birthday and it was also our anniversary so very special joint celebration) I'm a huge HP fan. I thought my partner was going to do what yours did. He didn't. Grin That was almost two years ago...still waiting now lol.

RatRolyPoly · 29/08/2018 18:19

I, er, might have had a few... The most recent one was the best though. He had what he knows to be my dream ring custom designed and made with a hand chosen stone - my absolute favourite stone, it's a beaut - and took me home one date night via my favourite night time view over our city. Down on one knee at the top of the hill, dream ring in hand.

Not marrying him anymore mind you, and the one time I did we divorced shortly after. All that glitters and all that! It ain't down to the proposal.

suchasoftersin · 29/08/2018 18:21

OH put the ring inside a golden snitch necklace. As I worked out how to open it he had got down on one knee. I was very impressed as he is not a Harry Potter fan at all but I am. He must have done quite a bit of research to get the idea. It was very romantic.

blinkywinky · 29/08/2018 18:23

As bless you Ratroly, I'm hoping you are right x

We were on our first date since having our daughter and the sly sod slipped me a Tiffany box just before dessert came and asked me if I would be his wife. He isn't one for making a scene and I appreciated that doing it in public was scary for him! He used to threaten to propose by hiding a ring in Nando's chicken 😂 luckily it was in a great restaurant we both love. I don't think I stopped grinning for a week. It wasn't elaborate or straight out of a film but neither is our relationship, it suited us to the ground and was intimate and lovely. ❤️

Stephisaur · 29/08/2018 18:36

@hersandhis noooo! That’s the worst!

EleanorLavish · 29/08/2018 18:46

WARNING STEALTH BOAST
Can't be arsed name changing so being a bit vague.
We had discussed marriage and actually looked at a few rings. I had seen one I adored but didn't like to ask for it.
Few weeks later DH whisked me away as a surprise for a few days to a super romantic place, where I had always dreamed of going. And one evening at sunset, as the church bells tolled and we sat overlooking the city roofs he got down on one knee, produced the ring and popped the question!
I was totally caught off guard but super happy.
He is still a romantic many years and kids later.

Armchairanarchist · 29/08/2018 18:53

He bought the ring in secret and just asked only two months after we'd started seeing each other. We married seven months later. That was 23 years ago.

Bobbiepin · 29/08/2018 18:57

DH took me to a spa for the weekend, got the room upgraded secretly and proposed in the room before dinner. Neither of us are ones for big public showy sentiments. He chose the ring, not what I would have picked but still perfect.

Funnily enough the spa had a big advert for having weddings there. I saw it before he proposed and homily nudged him and jokily said "should we get married?". We had a good laugh about that after.

larry55 · 29/08/2018 18:57

We had discussed what sort of ring I would like if we were to get engaged and dh was thinking of proposing on Christmas Day but a few days before we went out to some friends or the day and had bought the Christmas tree for my parents when on the way home he proposed so I like to say that we got engaged under a Christmas tree.

eggsandwich · 29/08/2018 19:02

My husband proposed outside the church we got married in, he knew the sort of ring I liked as I had pointed some out on a previous shopping expedition.

MeetOnTheLedge · 29/08/2018 19:15

We talked about it, decided to leave it a few months, talked about it again and agreed to go ahead them chose a ring together. I would have hated a surprise proposal, especially in public and would have hated to have a ring chosen for me.

backstreetboysareback · 29/08/2018 19:20

Ours was up the Eiffel Tower.

salsamad · 29/08/2018 19:27

We had been together 6 months and had briefly talked about getting house together but had made no definite plans.
I went to my DHs Mums house straight from a Step class after I'd finished work and was hot, sweaty and had a very red face. My 'DH' had only got in from work a few minutes before me. Hes an engineer and was still wearing his work clothes and was dirty from having worked in a boiler house. I was getting a drink of water from the sink and as I turned around he was down on one knee looking up at me with his gorgeous grubby stubbly face grinning and holding an engagement ring.
It was a total suprise and he'd only gone and sold his car to buy the ring. We've been together 25 years this September. I love him 😍 soooo much.

Mumof1andacat · 29/08/2018 19:29

We talked about getting married for a few months and then we went in to town to choose my ring. Dh knows I would of hated a surprise (hate any sort of surprise). We got married 4 years later (We wanted to buy a house before the wedding. We were both still living with our parents at the time of engagement)

FoodGloriousFud · 29/08/2018 19:30

Walking round lake Windermere, no-one around, down on one knee with the most incredible ring. It was perfect.

FoodGloriousFud · 29/08/2018 19:31

@salsamad Sold his car to buy you a ring is an incredible gesture, he sounds lovely 😊

blinkywinky · 29/08/2018 19:33

MeetonTheLedge how did he give you the ring and how did you tell people?

We talked about marriage pretty much from the start of our relationship, in a hypothetical we both would like to get married one day sort of way. She said she wanted to propose when the time came. I showed her some rings I liked randomly one day. One our first holiday together to Rome, she took me for dinner at a restaurant overlooking the Colosseum and proposed there. She had snuck the ring through customs and everything. It was perfect.

MeetOnTheLedge · 29/08/2018 20:25

Blinky we just went back to the shop to pick the ring up together after it had been resized. We told my parents next time we saw them, phoned DH's parents and our siblings and everyone else as and when or if they noticed the ring. I wanted absolutely no fuss about it.
