My partner and I have been together over 10 yrs and have decided to get married. We have booked most of the wedding now and are ready to tell the family.

Oh wants to get an engagement ring but I need to go to so I can choose it and try it on.

Tell me how you got engaged and when u got your ring please.

I'm dying to hear how others do it.

This was pre-internet/mobile phones BTW.

blinkywinky · 29/08/2018 20:28

Meet, I love it. That's exactly how I want it.

'We have booked most of the wedding now and are ready to tell the family. '

I don't understand this

You are already engaged

The wedding is booked

But you are awaiting a proposal?

I'd just call it a late engagement ring

Surely you've already said "yes"

Am I missing point?

blinkywinky · 29/08/2018 21:57

I agree Martha. I'm not waiting on a.proposal, I have said yes. I'm just wondering how.other people get engaged.

he'd only gone and sold his car to buy the ring

I almost "awww-ed" out loud. How cute.

I was watching Eastenders, it was a very gripping episode, the vic was burning down and we didn't know if phill got out alive or not. My OH says I have to ask you so something. I said ssh I wanna see if Phil gets out. He says will you marry me! I said yes and we hugged and kissed while I was still secretly watching the tv lol. And phill did get out alive.

My now DH was going to war. I wanted us to try for a baby incase he didn't come home. I asked if we could get engaged so he gave me his debit card to go and chose my own ring. Not how I had imagined it to be 😩

littleskittle · 30/08/2018 16:37

Before DH proposed he wanted to make sure he could propose with a ring that fit me, so he made up some convoluted story to get me to go with him to house of a client of his who was a jeweller. While there, he told the jeweller I had a nice ring (that I wear on same finger on other hand) and why didn't I take it off to show him. I did but was a bit embarrassed and couldn't see why jeweller would be interested in a random old ring of mine. Turned out he was taking my ring size so he could get the engagement ring right. I didn't twig at all and proposal on Christmas morning about 6 weeks later was a total shock!

My fiancé had it on his bedside table. He got our DD to give it to me on Christmas morning. It was really sweet and we're very 'low key' kind of people so it was the best way for him to propose !

Ours was a very long distance relationship (3000 miles). I was visiting for a week and he rolled over in bed and said I guess we should get you a ring then the old romantic . I wasnt fussed one way or the other . He researched and bought the stones and designed the ring and had it made and presented it to me as done and dusted when it was his turn to visit me. Id seen it and hed shown me the stones etc so I knew what it looked like ( Its beautiful ). Just handed me the box out his suitcase Grin. Still going after 15 years too

Yikesisthatmeinthemirror · 30/08/2018 21:38

I bought my own ring when out shopping with my SIL. She's American and their taste is for a big rock. It's big. I still love it.

useyourimagination · 30/08/2018 21:40

I proposed to him.

It was actually romantic in a very unromantic way. We were at dinner at a pizza restaurant (I remember a bottle of house rose was involved). The conversation turned to our relationship and went something like this (it was over 20 years ago so may not be verbatim anymore!)

Him (with a mischievous twinkle in his eye): where do you see this going?

Me: I'm ready for the next step

Him: So, what are you going to do about it?

Me: Will you marry me?

Him: Okay

We went out and bought the ring together the next day and then told our parents.

MouseholeCat · 30/08/2018 21:55

Ours was very boring. Something came up that threatened DH's immigration status and we were devastated and terrified he'd be deported. We talked through our options and the only one allowed us to be together and reduce the risk of this happening again was marriage. We'd discussed marriage many times before and it was always a given for the general future.

We didn't buy an engagement ring as we're quite progressive and don't like the symbolism. We bought handmade wedding rings though. Instead every year we have a blow out trip for our wedding anniversary and celebrate by exploring somewhere new together.
