Will there come a time when school holidays aren't so often or so long?

Do we really need 6 weeks for summer, 2 weeks in October, 2 weeks in Dec etc etc?

Is it really so knackering to be at school 5 days a week for 6 weeks that a 2 week break is needed?

With the rising cost of childcare I wonder if we'll ever see a reduction in school holidays?

These days there are probably a lot more children who are in childcare 9-5, 5 days a week anyway like my eldest was. When she goes to school it will actually be less hours a day in that environment, I can’t see her needing a break from that.
Some kids that are used to being at home maybe do though and teachers do too... I do think they have too many holidays though. Month in summer and week each half term maybe.

Any debate on school hours/hols should consider how to address that - is also a valid opinion.

But you are now stepping away from education and what is best for the children and are discussing what is best for the parents.

Yes agree with above also, some kids won’t do anything all holiday and are probably desperate to get back to school. I hope schools don’t still do the whole ‘what did you do this holdiay’ Thing, it’s bound to upset the poor mites that have had a bad time.

We had 8 weeks this summer and it was a bit long for me, but that is because the dc wanted to either go out or sit on screens. My issues with the vacation were about the parenting I wanted to do and what dc wanted to do, nothing to do with their formal education which school is to there to provide. We are lucky because we are on the UK system in the US so our half terms are blissfully quiet. My dc have very full on long school days and they are tired by half term. Holidays also give them a chance to get bored, invent, create, focus fully focus in interests like baking and we get to travel as a family. I want time to give dc my input (apart from the days they just bicker a lot, then I quite happily palm them off on school to manage)

Boney - how is inequality not a reference to children's needs? I didn't mention parents needs at all.

So when you post about School holidays re-enforce and promote inequality - is also a fact. you are not talking about women in the home, or reduced working hours.

You are wriggling and straining to try and make this out to be for the children.

dameofdilemma · 29/08/2018 18:23

No I wasn't referring to women - I was referring to it not being a level playing field for children.
For some children the hols are great. For others its a time to fall further behind.

I'm repeating my earlier posts so I'll stop now. We can agree to disagree.
I'll say you win if it makes you feel better.

I hadn't realised that it was a competition, but why would it make mne feel better?

Reducing the school holidays or increasing the amount of time spent in school won't reduce any under privileged children's position, without a real change in education policy that makes sure that there are enough teachers and support staff in place to over see the child's education, wellbeing and any and all curriculum changes that would be required.
