How can I make baked beans more interesting?

I’m doing a lazy dinner tonight (husband only just finishing work) and the vegetable portion is going to be baked beans. Problem is I don’t really like them - I had some barbecue beans whilst we were on holiday that were quite nice and wondering if I can add anything from my store cupboard to liven these normal ones up a bit.

Buttered toast, scrambled egg on top, grated cheese on top of the egg, and baked beans on top of it all - absolutely yummy!

Peoplemaynoticeus · 25/08/2018 19:49

This is how I do mine (vegan but you can just use dairy versions).
Heat some butter in a pan and fry an onion, add brown sugar to caramelise it. Then add smoked paprika. Add the beans and grated cheese, plenty of black pepper and some liquid smoke. I can't stand baked beans straight from the can, but could live on them like this.

I hate baked beans but had a veggie burger at a barbecue recently which had baked beans in and it tasted really nice surprisingly!

SleightOfMind · 25/08/2018 19:52

Depends what you like to eat and what is in yr ’store cupboard’.

You can pretty much add anything to baked beans as they’re a lovely bland blanket.

MoMandaS · 25/08/2018 19:55

Mix 2 tsps Worcestershire sauce, tiny bit of crushed garlic, tsp brown sugar, tsp tomato puree, half tsp smoked paprika and stir into beans for a barbecue sauce flavour.
