How do you cook your gammon?

Just a box standard gammon. Nothing 'festive' - just so that it's not dry and chewy (like my last one was).

Do you anything fancy schmancy with yours or just bung it in and hope for the best?

Slow cooker in coke (full fat) or ginger beer

BearBuilder · 25/08/2018 09:47

Quick and easy I wrap it in foil and bake, sometimes I do nigellas gammon in coke which is lovely!

Kerberos · 25/08/2018 09:48

Slow cooker for about 8 hours then an hour in the oven to finish it off.

JustlikeDevon · 25/08/2018 09:48

Boil for a bit then finish in the oven.

WilburIsSomePig · 25/08/2018 09:59

My mum used to boil hers @JustlikeDevon but I never know how long to boil it/roast it for, how long do you do yours?

I've left it too late for the slow cooker now, for tonight.

Boil for 20 minutes per 450g, then half an hour in the oven with brown sugar and mustard glaze

JustlikeDevon · 25/08/2018 10:09

If for e.g. it needed to be boiled for 2 hours, I would normally do 1 1/2 boiling and half hour oven. You can just boil it for the whole time. Off the top of my head it's 20/25mins per pound.

It feels all kinds of wrong discussing this with someone with your user name!! Grin

It's nice in the slow cooker in coke or scrumpy cider then 10 minutes in the oven coated in black treacle with some cloves stuck in it.

Maybugger · 25/08/2018 10:18

cover base of slow cooker with a centimetre of soft brown sugar, place gammon on top and pile another layer of sugar on the top. Cook on low for 20-25mins/ pound.

Utterly yummy!

GoldenHoops · 25/08/2018 10:21

Boiled with a couple of bayleafs for approx 3 hours .

VanessaShanessaJenkins · 25/08/2018 10:24

Put in a pan with cold water. Bring to boil. Pour out white foamy water and add cold water. Boil again. Repeat 3 times. This takes about 60-90 mins. Then put in the oven, pour over a little orange juice if you have it, for 50 mins then rest for 5-10.

Ignoramusgiganticus · 25/08/2018 10:27

I just boil the life out of mine for 2-3 hours. The longer the better. It's always really tender. Aldis joints are better than tescos by far.

honeysucklejasmine · 25/08/2018 10:27

Either slow cooked in cherry Coke, or baked under foil, with foil removed for last half hour, and a glaze applied then if I can be arsed.

Ha ha ha! I actually did think this as I posted and wondered if anyone would notice! Grin

abitoflight · 25/08/2018 10:54

Slow cooker with a tin of pineapple chunks

AmIUnderstandingThisCorrectly · 25/08/2018 10:55

Hairy bikers gammon with marmalade and mustard. Dead easy, delicious and moist every time.

Marmite27 · 25/08/2018 10:57

Slow cooker with

20ml apple juice

or a can of coke

Or 200ml water and a table spoon each of honey and mustard.

Maybugger · 25/08/2018 11:01

*ignore timings, depends on slow cooker instructions.

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 25/08/2018 11:08

Half the time simmered, half the time baked (wrapped in foil) then take out, strip, off skin, score fat into diamond shapes and brush with glaze of:
2 tbsp Dijon mustard
3 tbsp orange marmalade
Quarter teaspoon ground allspice (all one word and not to be confused with mixed spice)
2 oz Demerara sugar
Salt and pepper

Brush over fat, increase heat to 200c and return to oven for 15 mins.
This smells fantastic when cooking - in our house it's just not Christmas without this in the oven at some time on Christmas Eve.

NB glaze quantities are for a big piece (1 1/2 - 2 kg) which I always do since we'll be eating it for the next 10 days. Half would be plenty for a small, piece.
After first glazing you can also decorate with half orange slices fastened on with cloves, glaze again and return to oven for 10 mins but I don't bother any more since it's such a faff and most of the bits of orange used to slither off anyway.

pumpkintree · 25/08/2018 12:09

boil in orange juice for biut hour to hour and half then drain add marmalade to out side and bake in oven for 30 min on med heat.

NellieBee · 26/08/2018 00:15

Bung in slow cooker with can of Pepsi max Cherry.

happyasasandboy · 26/08/2018 07:16

I cook it in a pressure cooker. A smallish joint (to feed 4-6 ish) takes about 20 mins but it doesn't matter if you cook it too long. Just the meat and a large mug of water in the pan.

Crinkle77 · 26/08/2018 12:09

I second Aldi joints. I just boil minr.

Ignoramusgiganticus · 26/08/2018 12:14

Smoked is much tastier than unsmoked if you don't want to go to the faff of a glaze. All mine needs is a good old boil.
