Holiday alone

Handbag101 · 24/08/2018 19:42

Long story short me and my husband of 17 haven't been getting along very well of late - both mid 40s - no children . Basically we have a holiday booked to Tenerife tomorrow for a week. 5 star, on the beach, breakfast and dinner so half board. Lovely spa and gym

Ive decided to go along and whilst excited I am also nervous. I think I might try and blog my week away just for a bit of contact with people.

Nervous about being alone and eating alone and what to do.... actually I plan on laying around the pool all day. Just downloaded some books on my kindle and then going to finish packing.

Travelled round the US when I was younger but am completely nervous at the thought of a week away.. Anyone else been away and had a great time.

Thanks MM

Sounds like you’re having a wonderful time - I’m so pleased! But, like a PP, I too would like an answer on the sun cream dilemma, please. How on earth do you cover your back when alone?!

Rightsaidmabel · 28/08/2018 08:09

Suncream on back:
First, use a spray on sun lotion, your contortions to get all areas will improve with time ! think of it as Yoga .
Secondly,if you must use cream, apply on back of longhandled back brush packed for that purpose.
I once tried a line of cream on the rim of the bathtub and wriggling back and forth across it, but it wasn't very effective !
Good luck.

Handbag101 · 28/08/2018 09:01

Well gang. Sun cream on the back is definitely a 100% problem. It's the only area of my body that is sore and red.

Just having breakfast. Egg and ham and some fruit and listening to the couple next to me moaning about how he should start at the gym but he doesn't want to. I'm sitting him smug on my own.

I am about to take a big trip on my own at the end of Sept; it is too much walking for DH so we decided that I will go and do my own thing and we will have weekends and another holiday together later.
Can't wait; it is an escorted so lots of other solo travels. I think this might become my thing!
Have a great time and enjoy your time.

Handbag101 · 28/08/2018 17:26

Hey Diet. It will totally become your thing. A walking holiday sounds wonderful.

Anotherc lazy today. Just did a circuit training class which was a killer. Now sitting having a cup of tea and will soon get ready for dinner.

Going to start a new book tonight as well. An absolutely loving the experience. It might be the start of something new.

Great updates, so pleased to read you are enjoying your holiday.

MissFitton · 28/08/2018 18:47

Glad you're enjoying yourself Handbag101, it sounds idyllic!

Handbag101 · 28/08/2018 18:50

So just dinner gang. It's sushi and fish night. Some of my favourite things to eat. Always get nervous at the start of dinner but then soon relax.

Also just spotted a chocolate fountain OMG.

Best thing about holidaying alone is I get fresh towels every day. Not good for the environment I know but husband always moaned and gave me a massive lecture.

Hope you are all having great evenings. My mum, who is in her 80s, has put her heating on.

Loving your updates. I'm on my own in Spain with 3 kids tomorrow - wish me luck!!

Anonymumm · 28/08/2018 19:04

@Handbag101 sounds like you're having a fab holiday, and I think I've discovered one of my favourite MN posts, thus far - looking forward to your updates and enjoy that fizz, sounds bliss.

Handbag101 · 28/08/2018 19:13

Gower. You will be fine. Update us on this thread. You'll get great support. Wishing you luck - you won't need it though. You'll be fine.

Thanks Handbag! Don't want to hijack your thread though. Your holiday sounds amazing. I love the Canaries!

MissFitton · 28/08/2018 20:36

Handbag - at some point would you mind pm-ing me where you are? It sounds lovely and just the sort of place I'd like to go. Would it still be warm at Christmas?? Grin

Enjoy the rest of your evening!

freshstart24 · 28/08/2018 22:21

Oooh sushi AND a chocolate fountain. Heaven!

I love that this thread is helping people feel more confident about holidaying alone. Plus maybe spending time alone in general. IMO it can be quite empowering to feel comfortable in your own company.

I can confirm that it's chilly and rather grey where I am in the UK.

Hope dinner was lovely!

AlpacaPicnic · 28/08/2018 22:43

Your holiday sounds utterly blissful! I quite often go away on my own because the dH and I have very different ideas about what makes a nice holiday.
Last year I was super brave and travelled across America alone. It was fab! I did get lonely a couple of times but I was so busy I didn't feel it for most of the three weeks.
I'm not one for laying and tanning so I've never had the suncream issue. I only exposed bits of me that I could reach last year! I suppose in a pinch, I might ask a friendly looking lady if she wouldn't mind? I certainly would be happy to help out someone on their own, it wouldn't feel too intimate. Or look around for another solo lady and offer to reciprocate!

Or maybe is there a salon/spa in the resort? I might ask someone who worked there and offer them a wee tip.

Handbag101 · 29/08/2018 11:00

Morning gang.

Gower - no way. Post away. Everyone would love to hear how you are getting on.

Alpaca - wow. That is a real adventure. So brave. Go tips as well about the sun cream. Yes there is a spa here. I've got a lovely massage booked for later.

Freshstart - yes so empowering. I'm really into the swing of things now and am enjoying every second. I've got a week off next march and as soon as I get home I might book to come here again.

Had lovely breakfast this morning of eggs and meats and then fruit with some detox juice. Planning on gym later and then massage. Not many activities going on today. Think it might be a rest day.

It's 26 degrees today and not a cloud in the sky.

Enjoy your day team.

Handbag, so glad you are having a great time.

I travel solo a lot & always take Malibu Continuous Dry Oil Spray. It's an aerosol, even works upside down so you can reach every inch. I am fair & have never had any missed patches or burnt bits since using. I do get through a can approx. every 3 days - but it works for me.

Papergirl1968 · 29/08/2018 11:44

I’d love to have the confidence to holiday abroad alone, one day. Not right now as I have two dds, 14 and 17, but one day.
Well done to the Op and everyone else on here who has done it, and thanks for helping me imagine myself doing it one day.

HemanOrSheRa · 29/08/2018 16:13

I am so pleased you are having a fantastic time Handbag101 Smile.

DS has a couple of long school trips next year. DP gets his holiday allocated so very unlikely to get those weeks. And to be honest I prefer going away without him. He turns into Victor Meldrew on holiday. There was a very funny thread last year about men on holiday. I might book a short break away on my own!

Handbag101 · 29/08/2018 17:02

I hope Gower updates on how she is getting on. Had a lazy day today. Just been to the gym and did some weights and a bit of cardio. There is beach yoga starting soon but Im quite comfortable on my balcony enjoying the view with a cup of team. Hopefully water aerobics will be back on tomorrow.

I have to say gang im really am having the best time. The only time I get nervous is going for dinner but no one really notices anyone and any after ten minutes I start to love it.

I think I might have found my 'thing' - holidaying alone.

Have lovely evenings everyone. Hopefully this threads motivates people to book their dream trip.... alone!!!

So glad you are having a great week handbag. The possibilities for solo travel are endless, although it sounds as though you've already found your 'thing' .

Hope you are beginning to feel the benefits of the sun, good food, relaxation, exercise and me time! Oooh I'm quite envious!

thisyearwillbefab · 30/08/2018 08:42

Sounds absolute bliss. Can I please ask the name of the book about the lottery winner wife. Sounds intriguing. Enjoy today's adventures. Smile

sequin2000 · 30/08/2018 09:29

Sounds amazing. Amazon sell an easy reach back brush for sunscreen for future trips.

Handbag101 · 30/08/2018 18:53

Evening gang. Before I forget the book is called Did I mention I won the lottery but Julie Butterfield. Downloaded it on my kindle for 99p I think. Really easy reading and a lovely stor

So another lazy day. Did water aerobics, had lunch, more sunbathing, treadmill and weights for an hour and then an afternoon nap with a cup of tea.

Now settling down for dinner with fizz of course. Palma ham for starters and deciding on main. I think I need something healthy.

It's my last full day tomorrow. There is guided sleep relax tomorrow morning with blankets etc so I might do that. I'm having such a wonderful time.

Seqin.. That's a fab tip about amazon. I'll definitely get that for my next trip... alone. I'm already thinking where I can go next.

Have great evenings. My mum said it's going to warm up next week.
