Holiday alone

Handbag101 · 24/08/2018 19:42

Long story short me and my husband of 17 haven't been getting along very well of late - both mid 40s - no children . Basically we have a holiday booked to Tenerife tomorrow for a week. 5 star, on the beach, breakfast and dinner so half board. Lovely spa and gym

Ive decided to go along and whilst excited I am also nervous. I think I might try and blog my week away just for a bit of contact with people.

Nervous about being alone and eating alone and what to do.... actually I plan on laying around the pool all day. Just downloaded some books on my kindle and then going to finish packing.

Travelled round the US when I was younger but am completely nervous at the thought of a week away.. Anyone else been away and had a great time.

Thanks MM

Thanks everyone. Yes will defo take the kindle to dinner. I've read a whole book already today. Just back from the gym and saw a meditation class going on. Looked really relaxing with music playing. Will defo look into doing that. Got a lovely balcony overlooking the sea so just about to sit and start a new book. Thanks everyone.

Oooh. You lucky thing Handbag. I've just got back from a sunny short break with DS and his friend (both teens). Not quite the same as you I know, obviously. But I spent a lot of time (pretty much the whole days) on my own, reading, sunbathing etc in a very busy resort. I also ate out on my own at dinner a couple of times while the boys went out with their newly made friends. Definitely take your kindle. I did and though I didn't really need it in the end, it made me feel like I had something to look at if needed rather than staring off into space, which I'd rather have done Grin. I set up my table with kindle and drink. Enjoy your holiday!

stressedtiredbuthappy · 26/08/2018 17:44

Wow have an amazing time! I love holidaying alone, I'm self employed so only get short breaks,do not want to compromise with other people's wants!
I did this mainly before my dd arrived, I've done Hong Kong, Miami, Rio and Australia.
Had the time of my life , only regret it was before smartphones were common place so not the best pics, sadly.
Went to Paris a month ago for a concert , left my toddler with my lovely parents for 24 hours and it was fantastic.
Enjoy yourself you'll come back a new woman!!

Handbag101 · 26/08/2018 19:15

So just sitting down to dinner. Was quite nervous at first but on my second glass of fizz and do you know its not so bad. Just had mussels for starter and now deciding on main.

Such positivity from everyone. I love it.

Sounds amazing, I've always wanted to go on holiday alone but have been too worried. This is really inspiring me to do it! Glad you're having a great time!

freshstart24 · 26/08/2018 20:44

Go handbag! You are an inspiration. Meditation sounds wonderful as does a massage. What book have you finished?

notacooldad · 26/08/2018 20:57

I go away every month by myself, sometimes for an overnight and other times for a week or so since my boys were about 5.
I love the freedom of not compromising during that time.

HemanOrSheRa · 26/08/2018 22:46

Oh sounds good Handbag. Did you enjoy your mussels? Let us know what you had for main. Please Smile.

DailyMailDontStealMyThread · 26/08/2018 22:54

Sounds lovey, I’ll look forward to coming back and reading your updates

Handbag101 · 27/08/2018 07:52

Main course was lamb chops, spinach and rice and then fruit for pudding. I then took a couple of biscuits and little cakes back to my room and had them on the balcony with some peppermint tea. In bed by 9pm reading my next book.

I love reading all the updates from people and their experiences.

Going to make a cup of tea now and then head down for breakfast and then plan my day.

Have a good one and take some pictures for us to leer over 😬

freshstart24 · 27/08/2018 17:02

Hi handbag how is your day going? I have 8 relatives about to descend for Sunday dinner. I'd love to be on my own in a hotel room right now Grin.

What books have you been reading?

Handbag101 · 27/08/2018 17:15

Hi Fresh. Good luck with the dinner. I'm sure it will be lovely. Day has been great. Breakfast was smoked salmon eggs and fruit, then laid in the sun, then did water aerobics, more reading, then some fruit for lunch and now just back from the gym. Having a shower and getting ready for dinner.

Been reading a book about a wife who wins the lottery but doesn't tell her husband and lives a secret luxury double life. We can all dream.

Will update over dinner.

Just had to say I'm loving your updates!

CakeNinja · 27/08/2018 18:01

What’s the book called? I like the sound of it!
Enjoy your holiday, I dream of going all alone and will do once the kids are older.

Iflyaway · 27/08/2018 18:05

Solo travelling is the best! I've been doing it for years. The more you do it the more adventurous you get - South Africa anyone?! :-)

Can do what you want, go when you want, when you want, no-one whinging around you.

With a book and a smart phone you can always get away from the maddening crowd and I do love to chat to strangers.

Enjoy! The last thing one needs in life is a negative other bringing you down.

Iflyaway · 27/08/2018 18:09

Oh, and I'm a LP by the way so always had any holidays just me and DC.

Helped me to see that I can cope fabulously just me and him, made him a keen traveller too and set me up for life to step out alone.

daphine2004 · 27/08/2018 18:12

It sounds like something I did a few years and no stayed at the Sheraton in Costa Adeje. it was beautiful. The spa, champagne breakfast (included) and felt very looked after. I even did a 22 mike bike ride DOWN Mount Tiede with Rafting Bike (I think). You’ll have a lovely time and you’ll be able to organise your thoughts in the peace and quiet.

Handbag101 · 27/08/2018 18:37

Thanks gang. So interesting to hear your solo travels. I think it's quite popular and people seem to love the time on their own.

I've just sat down to dinner. This is always the nerve racking bit in my own. But I loop around and a lot of the couples aren't even speaking to each other. Just waiting for the waiter to take my order. Fizz of course. Not sure of my plans tomorrow yet. Will see what things they have going on tomorrow.

This sounds like a wonderful trip Handbag101! I'm following with interest as I'm a LP and although I've traveled in the UK on my own many times I'm toying with the idea of Christmas abroad somewhere hot and luxurious as the dcs will be with their dad.

The more I hear about your trip, the more I'm convinced it's a good idea! Grin

user1471453601 · 27/08/2018 19:43

I always holiday alone and love it. I have a theory that married couples have said everything that they have to say to each other by 6:00 pm, so are desperate for other company for that pre dinner drink. It gives me some usually nice company and something for them to talk about over dinner. Win win.

Handbag101 · 27/08/2018 19:45

Miss F. All I can say is do it. It's building my confidence every day and it really helps writing everything on here with people cheering me on. I'm already back in my room, with my cakes from the restaurant sitting on my balcony. Had lovely fish for dinner with vegetables and then cheese and fruit for pudding along with my two glasses of fizz.

To anyone wanting to holiday alone I would do it. My confidence will be sky high when I get home and it shows I can enjoy my own company.

Wow Daphne the bike descent sounds amazing and terrifying at the same time.

Miss- Christmas abroad must be very tempting under the circumstances. I've a friend who does this every year. She enjoys the festive build up, gets in the Christmas spirit and then disappears for a few days to miss the actual madness, before returning refreshed and revived when everyone else is full of turkey and a bit frazzled......

User I like your couples by 6pm theory. It is interesting how many couples look rather bored or annoyed with each other over dinner.

OP I hope today is another sunny day. Do you have any activities planned?

thatmustbenigelwiththebrie · 28/08/2018 07:01

I go on holiday alone - I am off to Slovenia next week.

I have a DH but he is going away with friends to Asia, we often take separate holidays (as well as some together).

I like going away alone as I don't have to compromise. There is none of this "what do you want to do?" I can do exactly what I want, when I want.
