Doves are just white pigeons.
When Neil Armstrong returned from the moon, he had to go through customs.

Do you know any unbelievable fun facts?

This thread is awesome but can posters please check their facts before posting? I had memorised that bullshit about million/billion and will probably forget to forget it Angry also most alleged acronyms are bollocks.

You know that recording of Churchill saying 'we will fight on the beaches'? That everyone thinks was broadcast during the war? It wasn't recorded til 1949, four years after the war had ended. No audio recording was made when he first gave the speech in parliament.

DadDadDad · 22/08/2018 11:37

All the ones involved x or adding numbers together are giving me a headache
some of the other facts are interesting but how many are true .
The only one I can think of that hasn't already been said is,

You can't fold a square piece of paper in half more than 7 times

@Angie169 - actually, someone proved that you can do up 12 folds, and remarkably she was a schoolgirl at the time. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Britney_Gallivan

@Jessers - the wikipedia page "History of Portsmouth" starts: Portsmouth is an island port city situated on Portsea Island in the county of Hampshire, England.

I've no question that in modern times the city boundaries extend off Portsea island, but I think it's reasonable to state that the city proper is on the island.

Jessers · 22/08/2018 11:49

@DadDadDad The city centre is on the Island, also that wikipedia page you are quoting has the borders of Portsmouth marked out, showing they extend to the mainland

The part I live on was part of Portsmouth long before they started reclaiming land etc.

So if you want to say Portsmouth City Centre is on Portsea Island which is an Island not the mainland that's fine.

But parts of Portsmouth that are not on the Island are just as much a part of Portsmouth as Southsea which is right on the coast.

Up to the number 20 all multiples of 9 have an answer that will add up to nine.

e.g. 9 x 14 = 126 1+2+6 = 9

And beyond. Just keep adding the digits. The digital root of all multiples of 9 is 9.

Nice little divisibility test.

iklboo · 22/08/2018 11:52

Up to the number 20 all multiples of 9 have an answer that will add up to nine.

I think all multiples of 9 will add up to nine (eventually) eg

246,392 x 9 = 2,217,528

2+2+1+7+5+2+8 = 27

2+7 = 9

Jessers · 22/08/2018 11:52

Oh and you missed a word from the Wiki page
Portsmouth is a port city in Hampshire, England, mainly on Portsea Island,

iklboo · 22/08/2018 11:52

Ha! Cross post with @LemonRedwood

Those plaited leather belts you see in Spain don't have holes. You use the gaps between the plaits.

The bus station in Boston is on the third floor of an office building.

There is an area of Argentina where the people speak Welsh.

If it was on the seabed it would be a tube, not a tunnel

I believe it would be a pipe not a tube.

During the Depression, there was a shanty town built on NY's Central Park.

I think it's Patagonia where they speak Welsh

GladAllOver · 22/08/2018 12:59

I believe it would be a pipe not a tube.

Pipe. A hollow cylinder or tube used to conduct a liquid, gas, or finely divided solid.

GladAllOver · 22/08/2018 13:04

@Angie169 - actually, someone proved that you can do up 12 folds, and remarkably she was a schoolgirl at the time. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Britney_Gallivan

Wasn't that just a theoretical calculation, and not actually demonstrated with real paper?

The city centre is on the Island, also that wikipedia page you are quoting has the borders of Portsmouth marked out, showing they extend to the mainland

LOL @Jessers you've got a real bee in your bonnet about that haven't you. As someone who used to live in actual Portsmouth, on the island, I can tell you that most people down that way still consider the 'City' to be the island. Yes areas like Cosham and Paulsgrove etc. are governed by the Portsmouth City Council, but they're not really the city. And most people I know who live in those areas prefer to be considered separate from the city itself. Additionally "The city centre is on the island" is true but misleading, the city centre is only a tiny part of the city on the island.

Basically @Jessers maybe chill out a bit and be a little less agressive, the 'Fact' is interesting and surprising because the area the most people know as Portsmouth City, is and island, and the vast majority of people are not aware of that. That said ~@DadDadDad I think you were among those who criticised/questioned the accuracy of some of the other facts posted here, perhaps be a bit more open to valid criticism of your own 'facts'?

DadDadDad · 22/08/2018 13:34

iklboo - that's a fact that can be proved - with a little bit of algebra you can show that if a number is a multiple of 9 then the sum of its digits will also be 9. As the result gets smaller every time you do this eventually you will get to a single-digit multiple of 9, which is 9 (zero can't be reached unless you start with zero).

MiddlingMum · 22/08/2018 13:51

Most wine is not vegetarian

That might be surprising to meat eaters, but I doubt if there are any vegetarians who don't know that.

Edinburgh being west of Bristol always amazes me. It's actually almost due north of Cardiff.

A dove is just a white pigeon ??
But but... A dove is a symbol of peace. People have them at weddings etc.

A pigeon is a bird that shits on the bonnet of my car and eats fag butts off the pavement.

SeekingClosure · 22/08/2018 14:20

Pigeons are basic bitch doves.

LadyWarleggan · 22/08/2018 15:26

So why don't we see lots of beautiful white pigeons about, why is it always the annoying grey ones? Confused
